If Grand Theft Auto Online has taught us anything, it's that Xbox/PC cross play for Red Dead Redemption 2 would be a fucking disaster for Xbox players. The PC version of GTAO has been largely ruined by modders, and the XB1 and PS4 versions have been saved those problems. You couldn't find a better argument against crossplay than that game.

I suspect a lot of PC cross play is going to start at the private game level to begin with for just that reason.

Nah probably not, I don't know anyone that still plays Xbox. Doesn't affect me if they open crossplay or not though.

It does though this would make developers lots of money. It would help take a little risk out of new IPs. Bigger stronger communities in games mean more sales especially dlc. If you want to see publishers take more risk and new IPs this does affect you.

Simple! An option not to join with PC players and choose to play with other consoles. Consoles are far, far more regulated than PC is.

Make memes to convince a corporation to act against its buisness interests. GAF at its finest.

Consumer satisfaction and brand image are absolutely HUGE to any consumer facing corporation.

Like I said, you have no idea where on the scale they see their image atm and you have no idea how far they would be ok with that scale falling before they do something.

It's just one avenue. Everyone has their strengths and talents so I provided as many ways to effect change as possible.

I really need to learn the basics on twitter lol

I think I'm retwitting stuff, that's good right?

Also signed the petition

lol, so do I! I've actually been trying to figure out the best way to get my tweets seen today. Adding popular hashtags works I think. I've started adding the #minecraft while linking the petition since it seems a lot of people follow it. I'm trying to come up with a list of #'s to tweet along with #PS4Crossplay atm though so if anyone has any suggestions go for it.

Are people actually signing a petition to make sony use xbox live as a sign in to play minecraft? The petition should be to both companies to use some middle party to unite the player base.

Of course MS is fine with getting an email address and contact info gor millions of Sony gamer..and of course Sony isnt.

Yes cross play should happen, but it needs a neutral service or a quid pro quo where Sony gets to run Destiny and COD cross play servers and xbox players have to register with psn for that. Wonder what MS would say to that.

What the fuck am I even reading lol

As has been addressed thousands of times, it is not just Minecraft.

Rocket League
Titanfall 2
Tekken 7
Gwent
Pure Chess

and more have no affiliation to XBL, whatsoever. Minecraft is owned by Microsoft and it runs on their servers; you expect them to change everything for precious, delicate Sony?

I don't understand why irrational fanboys think "oh YEAH? well have xbox players sign into psn for [insert massive third-party here]! how would you like that MICROSOFT?"

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever read. Why would it be PSN servers if that ended up being the case? Sony doesn't own those games and PSN out of everything would collapse under the pressure. If anything, it would be the Microsoft Azure servers and even still that would never happen. It would be publisher/developer ran servers, like how Psyonix is waiting to do now (if Sony stops holding it back).

You know, if it doesn't require me to log into shit like uPlay or Xbox Live.

I absolutely hate games that forces you to log somewhere else to access extra features.
That includes Uplay, EA's feature to create custom masks in Army of Two, Destiny's out of play content, Konami's online content, etc...

Just not acceptable.

I forgot about Gwent.

That's quite easily fixed with a toggle options for console players.

I'd mainly want to play with PC friends anyway, not ransoms.

Nah, this would be silly... why would activision want Sony running the servers for their games?

The game's developer should always run its server and handle crossplay.

3rd party games like COD and Destiny would naturally have a "neutral" service, because activision would handle the crossplay solution- just Psyonics does with Rocket League.

Should Sony actually release a game on a MS console, i doubt there'd be any issue with a PSN account being required for crossplay.... I don't even think this is the issue Sony has with Minecraft- because these accounts don't actually hurt anything.

How does xplay work properly without an extra login? I mean yeah you could have generic tags of out of network players, but cross-network friendslists, invites, messaging, DLC tracking etc would be impossible.

The Titanfall 2 devs have commented on crossplay?? That is by far the game that needs it the most with its small population.

There is one ACTUALLY valid concern and problem about this cross play precedent Minecraft is setting though; How long before games start making so that to invite, join and party up with friends you can ONLY use their ingame 3rd party friends lists and not the console OS?
Gone the days where I can just look at my friends list, open a friends profile and invite or join them in a game. As long as having the account for cross play friends lists and all that is optional I'm okay with this, but I don't want it if its going to ruin the current experience. Look at Warthunder on PS4, in order to play with friends you have to make an account in the game, search for your friends by their Warthunder name, and then join and invite them that way. AFAIK you can't use the PS4 OS to do this, but it does enable cross play and parties with the PC version. Personally as long as it is optional and people can still play games with their friends like they had before I see nothing bad about this.

That's the only real problem I can think of with cross play, this doesn't apply to games just having cross-play matchmaking which there is no downside to besides mouse and controller differences, but that's not consoles.

Killer Instinct coming to Steam

Obviously it's hard to say if this is important or not right now given there's so few details, but Killer Instinct between the being the first Play Anywhere, the first Arena title and so on seems to be Microsoft's testing ground for new policies, so there's a very good chance that this might have crossplay.

It's also a thumb in the eye of those saying MS isn't pushing first party stuff on other competing platforms.

The times they might be changing... Maybe... Hopefully. As Bob Dylan kinda didn't say.

I have a feeling it won't have play anywhere but will have cross play.

I'm not really sure that's a valid concern. There would be no reason to actually take away that functionality and it could still work in a cross play environment.

Oh yeah, I imagine it won't have play anywhere on Steam... although it's freemium to begin with, so I dunno what difference that makes (carrying over DLC I guess?).

If they're serious about crossplay though, this needs to work. (Or do you reckon we are meant to argue it's against Microsoft's business interests as well? :p )

I think full crossplay would be cool, and I agree that a company wants to take steps to keep it's image looking good, but I just don't see it as enough of an incentive. Sony wants to look good but even more they don't want to give any unnecessary advantages to their big competitors.

One of the main driving forces NOW for people getting playstations is that it's the one most people have. Consumers have largely forgotten the stumbles of the xbox one beginnings. So if you tell a former xbox 360 guy that it's ok that he gets a Xbox One because even though his friends are all on PS4 he can still play with them... that's exactly the scenario Sony doesn't want, and the path they won't start going down while they're in the lead.

It already works like that on Warthunder PS4, that's also how cross play between services like Steam and uPlay work on PC already. For example in this Minecraft situation, is it mandatory to sign in with a Microsoft account even if you only want to play with your PlayStation friends? It shouldn't be, the Microsoft account and Xbox live should only be used for partying up with users on other platforms.

As long as this is all optional I am all for it. Which really leaves it up to Sony and Microsoft to make it mandatory that it's optional. Microsoft already makes it mandatory that you can disable cross play matchmaking, hopefully that prevents this too.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.

Imagine if Switch became MS' go-to mobile platform for publishing some of their first party games. Next up, KI Switch with crossplay...

With Mario as a character in KI. I wouldn't be against it but I think that's stretching. You can play portable KI on their Surface range

It's wild speculation. Everyone else is doing the same with their hot takes defending Sony. Looked fun.

Why are you thinking one-dimensional? Describing Sony's stance from a business perspective is defending Sony? Could you put down your fanboy glasses?

It's a full on circlejerk with you people.

The fuck you mean by "you people"?

It's nice but I don't care for it much.

It makes a difference for less popular games with multiplayer that would benefit more from the possibility of increased player numbers by pooling the community across platforms.

However.

I seriously doubt that you will ever see the ability to party up across platforms (Xbox with Playstation, Nintendo, etc) as that just would not be a good business decision. Plain and simple.

Alright, so as I was stalking twitter accounts to tweet to for visibility, I stumbled across people using #crossplayminecraftPS4 and it seems to be active. So It might be a good idea to use that one too. I wish I knew where it was coming from though. Would be nice to see if we can combine forces.

Another one that seems to be finding a little traction: #wewantcrossplay

Seems to have sparked from this chap: https://twitter.com/gamingguidesde

Do you speak the language? I've been tweeting people this,

I started #PS4crossplay along with some other things you can do on Gaf
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1392594
We need to be together on this guys!

Would it be ok to tweet that to him?

I had an epiphany. It's going to sound dumb but I just realized that the best way to get visibility is to stalk @playstation @yosp @ShawnLayden and wait till they post something new and try to get one of the first replies in. So I've dedicated my but to my chair for a bit just F5ing... It's riveting. The suspense is thick.

I think stalking is a little above my pay grade :p

The guy seems pretty English savvy judging by his videos, so I reckon he'd be on board and get what you're laying down.

I'll do that then.

This is neat.

As much as many of you want this to be a thing, and who wouldn't looking at it from a gamer perspective in all fairness, the way it's playing out isn't having much of an impact at all.

I'd have thought the Minecraft situation would have been the biggest cause behind which to motivate a userbase that wants to be together, it should easily be the position from which to form a compelling argument, but seeing ~5k signatures on that petition hints at apathy winning out. Not that it's at all related, but the GTA V OpenIV petition has ten times the support in a similar time frame.
