Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Those are PS4 games. Not PS2 games running BC. They have been converted to use on PS4. Xbox originals would be BC.

They are emulated PS2 games. The trophies are done by monitoring memory addresses. Sony even patented it so we know exactly how they're doing it. If they were true ports they would have been properly updated to show the DS4 and replace all instances of it telling you to not remove your PS2 memory card or controller..

I have multiple ps2 games on my ps4 that have trophies.

Did you download those games for free using your original PS2 game discs? It's a totally different situation. If they were to go to all the hassle of adding achievements to all of the games on top of the work of making them BC in the first place they'd likely have to end up charging for it which defeats the purpose of BC for me. I'd wager most don't want to pay a fee to play games they already own.

wishlist item: they emulate the custom playlist functionality and let us load up songs for games that support custom playlists. The 360 never implemented it for the OXbox emulator, and you could sort of duct tape it by starting a music playlist before launching the OXbox mode which just played the music continously while playing the game, but it'd be nice if we could actually copy songs for the One to expose to BC games.

You can do it in BC games if you have a transfer kit and copy the audio to specific directories. The emulator will pick up your tracks like the OG would.

Yeah, so it's ok. If it's the price to have a "free" emulation, compatible with our 15yo discs, that's fine.

Do we know if their goal is to achieve 100% backward compatibility? On both 360 and OG Xbox? And will there be improvement with BC on Xbox One X? I'd like to have most/all 360 games at 60fps on XOX. :D

They won't be able to do 100% on either due to some games having license issues that can't be sorted out. Also, some publishers seem to not be big supporters. Look at Capcom. Bare bones support. They seem to only support games they have no intention of re-releasing with only the exception of Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10.
Also, Phil was on Giantbomb or another show and specifically stated they have already identified what OG Xbox games they will be able to curate (bring over) to BC on Xbox One. He did mention first party in a response to a question about a specific game, can't remember the title. So it looks like it will almost be the same scenario. I just hope Sega gets on board as Otogi 1& 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Gun Valkyrie deserve to be preserved.

Every game that is playable on Xbox ne now has achievements, so why wouldn't these? They keep talking about an Xbox family of games so it would make sense for all the games to have the same core features.

Who gives a f*ck about achievements to the point that they wouldn't play a game if it doesn't have them?

I'd love to be able to turn them off.

I think it'd be safe to say that the only guaranteed BC games at the moment would be the ones still currently being digitally sold on 360 since all the rights would generally still currently be in the clear to continue to be digitally sold.

So it's somewhat obvious that EA has kept up the rights for Burnout 3, so I'd expect that to come back (in fact, I almost expect them to throw it onto EA Access)

Quite a few, but that's 360 and these are OG Xbox. Does not mean they will automatically be BC just because some 360 games were.

I was genuinely just asking. Other than Bayonetta I couldn't think of any.

Sega games are the primary reason I wanted OG BC support. I'm hoping the go all in.

I do.

in fact on PS4, I don't buy games that don't have a platinum.

everybody is not like you.

and you can turn off the notifications and its like they are not there.

anyways I just want Dead or Alive 3 and Crimson Skies.

I'm sure it's the goal, but in practical terms, that's totally unreasonable to expect. And unfortunately re: framerates, that would require individual re-engineering, which in some cases is almost impossible for how the games were built.

This was a conversion more than an emulation, but the recent Phantom Dust release was locked to 30 fps because of how it was built.

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of difficulty with the DLC to Dragon Age: Origins and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on it for me. On both my Xbox 360 and Xbox One I have Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition installed. Booting the game digitally on Xbox 360 (or from the main game disc) shows and allows me to access the DLC. On Xbox One though, the DLC is not showing up as owned (it wants me to rebuy it). I have tried booting digitally, booting from the main game disc, and booting from the DLC disc. All three on Xbox One just boot the vanilla version and want me to rebuy the DLC again. I even tried going into my external HDD where Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition is stored, making sure the DLC is there and installed which it is, and booting it from there but the same scenario happens. Any ideas or thoughts about what is going on? Am I missing something?

Did you do the "manage game" install under DAO on the Xbox One?

Checking "manage game" for Dragon Age: Origins shows the following:
Installed - 12
Ready to install - [blank]
Updates - [blank]
Saved data - 1

I've also done a hard reset on my Xbox One and, yes, I'm connected to the Internet and Xbox Live.

Did you install the game from the Ultimate Edition Disk? I believe you have to do that for it to work as it's all included in the emulation 'wrapper'. If you didn't you may have to uninstall, put your disk in and reinstall it.

Use the 2nd disc to install, not the first disc.

the only thing about Dreamcast, even for the coolpoints, is that most of it's relevant titles were already ported. And sometimes ported again. You'd be more likely to just get the OXbox/360 ports

No worries man. I'm right there with ya. There are a lot of greats on OG Xbox. Gun Valkyrie did have some tough controls, but with Xbox One allowing button remapping and the Elite having paddles, I think it could actually be an even more enjoyable experience on Xbox One. I think I'll tweet Sega and see if I can get a response. :)

Tweeted them, let's see if they respond.
