Nintendo needs to let Ubisoft make a Super Mario RPG Remake.

After I see some pictures of Mario + Rabbids, like that below, I can't stop to thinking that the art of this game can look very close to The classic Snes game Super Mario RPG.

The clear image of Ubisoft's game, with a amazing anti-aliasing, really helps to remember the beauty that Super Mario RPG was back in the snes days.

That engine is amazing and can be used to make a proper Remake of this classic. Maybe update something, like more freedom of movement or chance the battle style for one more dynamic.

And speaking in Super Mario RPG, I can't stop to thinking that Geno can be a amazing addition to Mario + Rabbids cast, since it already has a gun in his hand.

So guys, what do you think?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I would rather have the Ubi Paris/Milan team tackle another Nintendo IP after Mario + Rabbids.

Mario gets enough love already.

I'd kinda rather see Ubisoft do their own thing such as the game theyre making, rather than take what Square did and make it new.

Also, doesn't Geno belong to Square?

Yeah those unique characters belong to Square so Nintendo needs to give Square permission to do a sequel.

I was very surprised that I was even remotely interested in a Rabbids game but the gameplay looked pretty fun.

My weird idea would be nintendo to ask Disgaea guys to make a mario rpg. Could be real fun. Would be written by Nintendo of course, story wise.

This is getting to GameFAQs levels of fanfiction ideas for games. Nintendo would want to make this sort of remake by themselves.

No. All super Mario RPG characters belong to Nintendo. Geno appears in Mario and Luigi in a time that Square and Nintendo are not very good with each other.

Aren't Square in the credits for this specific very little sprite? :p

Edit: There it is lol.

Super Mario RPG is overrated, the first Mario & Luigi and the first two Paper Mario are much better RPGs.

Besides I'd prefer they worked on another new and fresh collab game.

Too bad it'll certainly be Mario + Rabbids 2.

There is usually a copyright notification at the bottom of that screen. Geno is Square's.

If Mario + Rabbids does well, I could see one of two possibilities happening:

- The Ubisoft team are given free range to make completely new Mario games
- The Ubisoft team will be forced to make countless sequels to the Mario + Rabbids franchise until people beg for Nintendo to pull the plug.

No Geno without Square Enix my friend
Square Enix needs to still OK a remake for this to happen.

You guys are bringing this up like this would be an issue. You really think SE would cockblock Nintendo is they wanted to use Geno ? Its a formality nothing more.

Not even Nintendo teams have completely free range about what they can do with Mario. Ubi will always have to satisfy Shiggy/Nintendo first before they can move on further with a project.

I'd much rather another RPG take than just a remake. I love what they are doing for Rabbids. Would love to see Nintendo expand on the idea of collaborating further with outside studios when it comes to Mario. Or you know, team up with Square again.

I'm WAY happier they used XCOM as a template. There are no other games within the turn-based gun / cover / hit percentage genre.

There are plenty of semi-interactive turn-based RPG's.

I actually agree.

With a remake ubisoft doesn't have to come up with the battle system, thr characters, the dialogue, the humor, the worlds, the enemies and so on.

Pretty much just graphics.

I'd be down.
They have no incentive tho

Lol at that point Nintendo could do it themselves.

SMRPG is what it is because Square had the latitude to be Square. Let Ubisoft be Ubisoft, as they're already doing to what looks to be stupendous results in Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Rabbids is already SMRPG as Ubisoft would have made it.

Well, in 3D on Nintendo systems, anyway. You really ought to take a look at SteamWorld Heist (and yes, I know it uses free aiming in place of hit percentage, as does the excellent Code Name: STEAM).

🤔

So Nintendo will give Ubisoft its flagship IP to make games cart blanche because they made a good XCOM clone.

Why would you ever think this?

literally the only good things about smrpg wer the battle initiations, the writing and timing based action commands. systems that were vastly improved in the paper mario duology

the camera angle was incredibly poor for platforming and getting those battle initations, most of the combat skills and options were downright pointless or did basically identical amounts of damage, monsters were all just hp sponges or one shot if you hit them with mario or an element and there is little incentive to use team synergy rather then just stack up a bunch of attackers and do a full team heal constantly.

ubisoft's xcom clone / improvement / successor is an interesting project all to its own but its successes have very little indication that ubisoft would be able to make a compelling traditional rpg with tight scaling and variety in party mechanics and incentives to change up your strategy. Everyone in mario xcom has a gun and a dash and a melee aoe nuke and seemingly similar moveset basis from preview footage, its more of a game about positioning then rpg mechanics.

Suggesting to bring back mario RPG and not push it more towards a squaresoft dint with class mechanics (actually call whatever substitutes for mallow geno peach and bowser as black mage effect mage white mage and dark knight properly) or bring in more complex mechanics from a game like persona or smt or other final fantasies is just asking to make another mario bros rpg or paper mario or mario xcom if you suggest SMRPG or any final fantasy game needs a "grid"
The differences between xcom and a final fantasy tactics (X/a/a2) game should be obvious in how you build a strategy / team / variety of options to tackle given challenges.

If anything Ubisoft has shown technical competency in making compelling platforming challenges and visual flair with their Ubiart engine they alternate between using and stuffing under a rug. They should be the ones to pick up the flaming wreckage of whatever Super Paper Mario was supposed to be and make the platforming elements actually work and find a way to simplify the menuing that got in the way of the bad platforming

Most younger people will probably have played Mario RPGs after the SNES. It's probably not worth remaking SMRPG for the dads.
But then I'd say the same for M&L Superstar and that's being remade.

I've actually played Heist and totally forgot it was a 2D XCOM. I liked it a lot. A ton of charm, fun to upgrade the squad. I'd rather they made another one of those than the upcoming Steamworld Dig sequel.

I'd rather have them (or Nintendo preferably) make a 2D Mario game using the UbiArt Framework.

I'm sick of the NSMB style.

Just for a remake? I'm sure Nintendo or SE could make a remake look as wonderful as those Rabbids screens.

If you're talking a full-on sequel or brand new Mario RPG that's kinda what Ubi is doing. I guess if you specifically want the same characters then that's not happening but that wouldn't happen without SE anyway.

I'm just very happy with what Ubi is making right now to be honest.

I mean I like Ubisoft and Mario + Rabbids seems really awesome. But I'd rather have someone else doing Mario RPG, not a huge fan of Ubisoft writing....get Obsidian on the line! And not a remake, rather just a new game.

Nintendo already has plenty of capable developer options to make a remake. Stop being a slave to recency.

You barely know anything about how well the story elements are!

Don't wanna sound like language police, but this is a real pet peeve of mine.

I'm pretty sure you should be saying "free rein" as opposed to "free range".

"Free rein", as it relates traditionally to horse riding, in that you "give the horse free rein" by holding the reins more loosely to afford the horse a greater freedom of movement.

I think people confuse the phrase nowadays with "free range" as it pertains to the manner in which livestock (mainly chickens) are kept. Not that the latter would even be wrong in terms of the meaning you're conveying... *shrug* I dunno anymore.

I would be down 100% for this, SMRPG is one of my all time favorite games.

I think Id rather have a new story though in the same spirit as the original. Similar timing based combat, party system, new characters. Something deeper than the Mario and Luigi 3DS series.

I'm not going to lie... but I think it's pretty surprising that Ubisoft is producing a Mario game that looks better in terms of pure visuals than Nintendo's Mario game (my opinion of course - please don't dogpile me).

I'm not surprised that people are starting to wonder about what might be possible with other Nintendo IP-based games in the hands of third party developers.

As much I personally agree with your take that Nintendo has capable developers in terms of game design, I think that Mario + Rabbids is a testament to the fact that their internal Mario team at least, still has some ways to go in the graphics department.

I mean, if Ubisoft can pull out that level of visuals on a Switch, I really feel that Nintendo's internal devs are not doing enough in terms of marrying their normally excellent artistic design with the latest graphics rendering technology... I'm sorry to say.
