16-bit Cityscapes

Shadowrun4.jpg

It is really hard trying to find pictures of it, and I lost my ROMs when I had to reformat my PC this year.

Shadowrun on the SNES had awesome cityscapes and music. What an incredible game and I am so happy that it lives on in the form of the Shadowrun(Returns, Dragonfall, Hong Kong, etc) Harebrained developed games on PC.

Nice to see this thread pop up again. It's one of my favorites!

After the Sonic Mania thread turned into an in-depth analysis of the building perspective in Studiopolis, I kinda just expected this revival to have somthing to do with that.

Granted, it's a 32-Bit Cityscape, but the art direction is clearly inspired by 16-Bit ones, and a number of the buildings are inspired by Streets of Rage directly.

Yeah, I guess that was my fault. Sorry! Not everyone seems to like that kind of stuff, even going so far as calling it fanboy whining and such. I'll not bring it up again.

And to be clear again, I do like Studiopolis overall, quite a bit actually. I particularly love how the background varies greatly from top to bottom, showing a subway track + train and studio lights at the bottom, then multiple layers of windmills, lights and skyscrapers (including the ones I continue to find somewhat problematic in their angle/perspective ;-) ) set against a yellow sunset, and finally dark clouds with stars above them. It's incredibly impressive!

Since we're on the topic of Sonic's stage art, I'll quote RagnarokX's great post (without the text as that deals with my perspective issue again) that includes quite a few other cityscapes from the series:

Carnival Night Zone

I've always been a big fan of Casino Night Zone especially. To me it's an almost perfect pixelated rendition of Las Vegas' Strip as seen from a distance. I love how the lights shimmer to suggest moving cars in particular.

Any good city scapes from Sonic we missed here?

The PC-98 intro of Policenauts has a beautiful cityscape and the music sets the mood perfectly.

I think this looks like the definitive version of Policenauts. The BGM in the intro is Old LA 2040, which is that games equivalent of Snatcher's One Night in Neo Kobe as far as I'm concerned. A much better theme than the one they used in the PSX and Saturn versions. I much prefer the art style of this one too. A lot of PC-98 games look that way.

It's a shame that version hasn't been translated.

I was in the mood for a quick playthrough of the arcade version of Golden Axe before going to bed. After disposing of Death Adder, I took a good look at the background of the game's ending, and thought: "This belongs in the 16-bit cityscapes thread!"

Thanks for doing that! An all time classic as well. :)

I absolutely adore this dystopian japanese pixel art from the 90s. It perfectly captures the mood at the time.
I wish I were more aware of that stuff back than, so I could've enjoyed it when it was still coming out en mass.
I guess it's time to pay a visit to the rekall tumblr again, to get myself my monthly load of cyberpunk
(srsly though, we need more new games like these!)

Cool thread. Looking through it reminded me I need to get back to watching my Bubblegum Crisis blu-ray set.

I forgot about this thread. It always hits me in the feels though.

P.S. The Mario is Missing screens reminds me of Mario Odyssey.

I always was fascinated with video game backgrounds, especially urban/city ones. It's so awesome seeing other people share the same interest.

I don't know what it is, but they're just so fascinating to me.

I don't think anyone has put up a pic of the Genesis version of Shadowrun.

Just when I think this thread cannot get even more awesome, it does.

Thanks, Havoc!
