Are you ashamed to be a "gamer"?

After reading though this thread, I think this is a really interesting question

There has been a lot of negativity in the gaming world lately, from the Nick Robinson stuff, to the abuse you have to deal with when using voice chat, to basically anything involving anyone female working in the industry, and then everything and anything to do with GamerGate

Now, if being a part of the "gaming community" is intrinsically tied up with your enjoyment of games, or if you identify as a "gamer" (which a lot of people posting on this forum don't, as it happens) then are you ashamed to be a gamer?

For me personally, I don't really see there as being one unified gaming community of which I could identity with, even if I wanted to.

While I think we should strive for things like better representation in media, and better tools to make online gaming communities more inclusive, I can separate the video game industry/media and the video games themselves

The idea of having to remove myself from all of gaming because of the industry as whole or because I'm ashamed to be associated with video games and what they represent in media is just odd to me

What to you think, GAF?

I'm not a "gamer" in the same way I'm not a "filmer" or "televisioner" or "reader". I play video games. I watch tv shows and movies. I don't read though.

No, wouldn't care to know anyone that would think less of me for it. I find aspects of the community around it embarrassing at times but I'm not at all ashamed to play games.

No. Assholes exist all over the world in every industry, hobby and niche interest. I don't have to feel shame on their behalf just because they decide to be assholes while also being interested in the same things I am.

Not quite. I think over obsession in anything can be weird. I think the key is to have some balance.

I do think this need to identify by consumption habits is rather strange. Most people don't really do this.

No. It's a hobby and I enjoy it in my leisure. It's no different from those that relax with a movie, TV show, or watching sports.

Depends. To friends I'm not ashamed.

At work I keep that shit under wraps though. People still view gaming negatively. More so once you are in a leadership role in your organization.

Used to hide it while I was dating too. Luckily I'm married now and my wife doesn't mind me gaming.

I am not a fan of the term gamer, I'm not a movier or a tv shower because I enjoy tv shows and movies, but I'm not ashamed to admit to people that I play quite a lot of games.

Also I still haven't bothered to look up wtf gamergate is.

Hell no. Everyone I know knows that I game and have yet to have any sort of negative reaction to it. If they did, I'd simply ignore it. I do it for me, and that's it.

I grew up in an environment where no one really played video games other than stuff like FIFA after they started high school. I wouldn't say I'm ashamed, I just don't tell people unless I know they also have an interest in video games.

Do I dislike the negative shit that happens in this industry? Absolutely.

Am I ashamed to like playing games? No.

The term "gamer" can burn in hell.

Are you a movier for liking movies? Pretty much everyone likes video games. I could bring my Switch to a party and everyone would be down for Mario Kart.

I don't identify myself as a "gamer" to begin with. I just love playing games during my free time, same with other hobbies, why would I be ashamed of that?

Not at all. It's not my identity, but it is a hobby I greatly enjoy just like listening to music/going to shows and watching/collecting movies.

No, don't let the radical vocal minority ruin something like this for you. Instead, work to make your hobby better recognized for more than extremist assholes.

The things some 'gamers' are doing have nothing to do with games really, it's just hateful people bringing hate into their hobby and being obnoxious pricks about it. Gaming is just getting the butt of it right now due to the rise of the internet and video games at the same period of time.

Dude I just play games for fun. Not really associated with gaming community outside of GAF let alone being ashamed or even proud of it.
