IGN: Skyrim on Switch first hands on gameplay video

I know I already asked questions earlier, and it seems really great. I see a lot of people talking about pouring in 100+ hours into the game. Definitely seems worth $60; do you all think so? Or, is a lot of that "padding" and I should try and wait to find it for just a bit cheaper, like either a used copy or wait a while for it to possibly come down in price (if a game like this would even do that; I'm not familiar with the company to know if they do that type of thing or not after a year or two!)? Again, I'm coming into it entirely fresh having never played it before!

I would say it's worth full price but there is quite a lot of padding. Puzzles and Draugrs are reused quite a lot, and dungeon layouts don't feel all that different from each other with a decent number of exceptions. Dragon fights can get a bit repetitive too. Also item variety in the base game isn't amazing, though it's better than Oblivion in my opinion. But if there are mods (which are rumored) that will take care of a lot of those padding issues.

Padding wise one big thing to look out for are the miscellaneous "radiant" quests which are randomly and endlessly generated. Unless you really want whatever the reward is it's probably a good idea to ignore most of them because it gets incredibly tedious trying to complete them all.

As for length, one of the reasons people can put so much time into it is also the replayability- you can basically go through the game as a full-on warrior, mage, or thief or any hybrid thereof and it's kinda difficult to experience all of that in one play through.

Also one tip if you've decided to get it- there's a very easy exploit to make yourself incredibly powerful early on involving synergy between enchanting, alchemy and smithing, but using this exploit basically removes any of the challenge in the game and I'd recommend not doing so unless you want to just faceroll the entire game.

60 dollarydoos and no modding is a hard sell even if it ran perfectly and has all the DLC.

Why are people assuming no modding? The early rumors said it will have the same mods the PS4 version had (which obviously are inferior to PC mods), though we've had no official word on it either way (AFAIK).

Personally, I'm going to buy it because while I had it on PC, but never got that far into it. I saw no reason to buy the Special Edition when I didn't really touch it on PC but to have such a vast open-world game on Switch is awesome.

I beat GTA V on PC and I would re-buy it on Switch in an nano-second. Even if it is "repetitive" by open-world RPG standards it has an incredible variability and tons of content when compared to any other portable game.

I fully recognize my gaming tastes aren't the same as everyone's, this is just my opinion.

Working against this release is that the HD Remastered Version will probably be free on PSN or XBL or heftily discounted by the time it launches.

what the fuck are you tal-

Thank you again so much Skittzo0413! You've given me a lot of insight into the game already! I'll have to be aware of that exploit; well, probably forget about it entirely so it doesn't cross my mind! I plan on wanting to take my time exploring and learning the game and wanting some challenge, so I'll have to avoid what you mentioned!

I really don't mind tedium too much (grinding, dungeon crawling similar looking spaces, etc.), so nothing you mentioned really sounds too off-putting or anything!

Thanks again!

No problem! The game gets a lot of shit (some of it deservedly) but it really is a very fun game, especially if you like WRPG/CRPG games.

It being portable is gonna make it a lot easier for a lot of people to enjoy it, so that's great too. I really hope there is at least some mod support because that's a huge part of what most people like about it too.

So if this had ps4 level mod rules, how good can it get? Will it be mostly Qol mods? Cause I can live with that

It's the terrible combat and mechanical interactions that always kill these games for me.

Maybe i can look past it on portable...

Yeah, from memory it's just new assets not allowed (lots of weapon / armour mods) but some of the QOL ones would be fine, Better Horses etc...

That said, I will be shocked if there are any mods, I feel that they are shooting for the full DLC package and some amibo stuff, with improved (but not full SE) graphics. Still solid value and I will buy again (played hundreds of hours on PC) just for the portability.

Man...that footage is looking good. Wasn't planning to get this, but portable Skyrim?...man I'm gonna have to sell something to afford this and everything else coming out.

Maybe I misremember, but the leaves on the trees seems very much like the remaster quality and much better than the OG version.

This is definitely the Special Edition, I have no doubt anymore now. The textures looks too good to be the OG version, and as you said, the leaves on the trees and on the ground just weren't there at all.

Yeah, it immediately struck me how rich and vibrant this footage looked compared to the game I have played on PC (a weak one even at launch of skyrim) for 250 hours. Really excited to have such a good version of Skyrim portably, really what I envisioned the ideal version of the Switch to be: massive games on the go.
Shouldn't be a problem for Switch with 4GB of RAM (3.5GB for games, right?)

360/PS3 had less than 512MB for games.
3.2GB of RAM for games, which shouldn't give any problem at all in that regard.

I swore I'd wait to replay Skyrim in VR on my PC someday (once VR goes down in price and Skyrim has native, good VR support), but I can't help but be incredibly interested in this version.

There's just something about having such big games ported to handhelds that I just love. When the DS launched with Mario 64 it was just crazy to me that I played this game on a console as a kid, and now it's IN MY HANDS! Got a similar feeling with Xenoblade Chronicles on the 3DS, you just don't see such huge scale games on handhelds very often, even on the most powerful ones like PSP or Vita.

The fact that VR is still so expensive and Skyrim VR is only coming to PSVR (at least for a short time) means I'll probably be picking up this version. Now I just have to cross my fingers and hope we'll get at least minor mod support. I know it's a longshot, but sometimes miracles do happen, haha.

Person playing has way bigger hands than I do. Makes it look like they're playing on a Switch Mini or something, haha.

The ultimate test would be if someone could come to the grass area in front of Whiterun, where you meet your first dragon. That's where I thought the difference was really the biggest compared to the original version, in terms of lighting, grass density etc.

This is going to do gangbusters on Switch, especially since it looks good. Big name and a big AAA RPG on a console with few of those? It's going to sell for sure. Other third parties are missing out by not following in Bethesda's footsteps.

to me all these ports of a 6 year old game mean we'll be getting The Elder Scrolls 6: Skyrim 2
Not really. Imo it's more that they aren't bringing a TES game to this gen and are tiding us over with a Skyrim remaster (and are milking their most successful game for all it's worth).

Any word on docked resolution? I expect handheld to be dynamic 720p at 30 fps, maybe 900p docked?

I don't think anything has been said but surely it has to be 1080p docked, even if there are enhancements you're still working with a game that came out in like 2011.

720p 30fps for undocked and 1080p 30fps for docked is what I'm expecting.
