Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana - Review Thread

SolVanderlyn

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Ys no Kiseki is fine with me. Sounds great.

I do understand the lament of the old school fans, though. Ys 7 and onward are really different beasts, even if they share the same basic structure.

I'm buying this game on day 1 but i still haven't decided if i want to go for PS4 or Vita version.Vita version looks and runs very good (all things considered) and portability is a major plus. But then again PS4 version also has obviously a lot of benefits.

I've got this game pre ordered first ys game at launch, but not expecting much after the disappointment that was ys 7 and memories of celceta.

I was expecting good scores after playing the demo. It's everything I could have wanted in a current gen Ys game. If the whole game is as fun as the Coral Reef Forest demo, this is a best of generation ARPG if not one of the all timers.

How are the graphics and framerate of Vita version?

Also, how significant is the lacking content? Is it just optional stuff? Could someone detail it a bit more?

I could play either version, but would rather play it portably.

I gave up platinuming Celceta because of the 100% treasure chest. I filled the map and got all 256 resources points, both which are tedious, and then hit a road block.

Fuck these scavenger hunt trophies.

Double dipping both Vita and PS4 versions

For me it's PS 4 for CE and PC.

Can't wait to play this, I have been a Ys fan since I played The Vanished Omen on SMS .
I ordered the collector edition for PS4 from NIS .

Ugh, I HATE map-filling mechanics in my RPGs.

Having played both, this game is far more lenient with the map stuff, I don't think you'll be missing a small spot if you just explore everything properly. If I remember correctly, there's also an item that increases the range that you can 'chart', so having that equipped is a good idea.

It's not 60 FPS like it is on the PS4, of course. For the most part it runs okay on the Vita at 30 FPS, with the occasional drops here and there. Some very special places can cause more than the occasional drop, but for the most part it's a very, very impressive game for the Vita. Here's random footage off YouTube from someone playing the english build of the game in English on the Vita: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeJFry--fLo&t=3m56s

Now, for your second question though, it depends. The PS4 version adds a couple dungeons for Dana, along with a few boss fights. These flesh out her story a bit more, but for the most part it's... well, backstory. It won't really change any of the plot and the Vita version will give you a perfectly fine version of the Ys VIII plot for what it is. Other than the dungeons and the story, PS4 also has different 'attack forms' for Dana, which the Vita version lacks, as well as a new difficulty mode, Inferno. Inferno is harder than Nightmare, the highest you can select on the Vita, and features enemies that hit harder and are sped up. I think these are probably the main differences, so if you think you'd be fine sacrificing the 60 FPS/more backstory for the game on a portable system, go for it.

I posted on another thread the other day, but I bought it in japanese as soon as it came out and the game is a really, really great looking PS Vita title. I had the feeling I was playing something special on that system, which the PS4 version obviously can't replicate as even though it's 60 FPS and boasts high res, at the end of the day is still limited by what Falcom can do.

By early I meant this many days before the game comes out. The embargo is up almost 2 full weeks ahead of the game's launch.

Ah, yeah. I don't know why they did that. I was thinking maybe they had to wait since Ys Seven drops today, or maybe they wanted to wait until that was out first. I had forgotten about Seven even coming out today until last night XD

Thanks for the detailed answer! I'm confidently picking the Vita version now.

I'm not sure I could play the Vita version after playing it on PS4. 60fps and clean as hell, it's just too much of a masterpiece not to appreciate it like that if at all possible.

You first marvel at how great a game it is looking on the Vita, then you do a replay on the PS4 further down the line for 60 FPS and all the bells and whistles!

Clearly this must be the right answer ;)

I think I'm going to try the demo in my vita just to see how is the experience.
There's a high chance I'm going to end up loving the game after that demo, so getting the portable version at a cheaper price later wouldn't be a improbable situation.

Edit: Damm demo is not available in Europe for vita yet?

Here's mine, from App Trigger. Gave it 8.5/10.

Ys VIII abandons the sprawling, dramatic settings of other JRPGs for a restrained world and cast, then gives us every reason to fall in love with both. From combat to story to exploration to sound, Ys VIII offers subtle, but refreshing distinctions from the usual genre fare. Aside from a handful of mechanical frustrations and the occasional enemy fatigue, there’s nothing on the Isle of Seiren to inhibit the joy found in Adol’s latest and greatest adventure.

Any of those reviews mention pc vs ps4 performance? As in any reason to go pc?

No, I don't think many had a chance to check out the PC version. Still, the PS4 handled the game without any issues. 60fps, crisp graphics and more. The PS4 version is fantastic, I don't see any reason outside of bad optimization, that the PC version should be bad.

I thought Ys games were on the shorter side, like 10-12 hours?

Up until Ys Origin. After they moved to consoles Falcom's shifted the focus and started turning Ys games into more of an 'RPG' experience, so you've got towns, a lot of NPCs, lots of dialogue and more focus on story. Some people enjoy it, some don't, but yeah, Lacrimosa of Dana is probably that new formula taken to a new height as it is by far the best inception of 'party system Ys' released until now.

For sure, double dipping and playing the Vita release first is the correct strat if possible

I'm actually not sure if there's a Vita demo out there. The reason being that the Vita demo originally released in Japan was different from the demo avaible on the PS4. PS4 only allowed you to play through a dungeon, whereas the 'demo' for the Vita was like, the prologue plus the entire first chapter of the game up until the end of the dungeon avaible on the PS4. They even allowed you to use your save file to continue the game from there on if you bought the full version.

I think NISA probably just couldn't get a release for that kind of the demo here in the west, and they couldn't build their own Vita demo, so... no luck there.

Any major differences between the PS4 and Vita versions? Are they the same content-wise?

I'm gonna have to wait on this with the amount of games releasing, but really glad to see it reviewing well!

Yeah the good thing is I can wait on this.

We have yakuza kiwami right now. Then destiny 2 id play with my friends. And then divinity original sin 2 also with friends.

Only reason I could see getting ys at this time is if I beat kiwami while I have these two other Co op games and I need something to play solo when my friends can't play the other two.

Thank you! I don't care for frame rate, but it looks like I'll be getting the PS4 version for the additional content, which really sucks for my OCD cause I have practically the whole series on Vita/PSP. Haha.

Yes, apparently right now there's only the demo for the ps4 available and later for steam. No luck, but thanks anayways.

Great Reviews! I've played Memories of Celceta but no other Ys, can I play this one or do I need context of other Ys games? If so, which ones?

Oh forgot this was coming soon. Going to be on the backburner for now, but I enjoyed Ys 7, so I keep the PC version in mind sometime down the road.

I'm interested, but I don't have much experience with the franchise and there are a bunch of other games that are higher priority for me coming at around the same time

Does this game have potion limits?

Playing Celceta on Hard and it's kinda dumb as hell that I can use a million potions in a fight. Maybe that's not the case on Extreme?

The way the game works with potions is a bit difference, as you can't just 'buy' them, you fill in bottles and there's a limited number of them. Still, you can just... not use the potions as self-imposed challenge, the game is completely beatable like that in any difficulty, so it's totally worth it if you're looking to spice up your experience :p

I enjoyed the demo, but I hate that the game is coming out the same month as Samus Returns and DRv3. I'll probably have to hold off on this for now.

Limited bottles sounds perfect!

I don't like self-imposed challenges during an initial playthrough, doesn't sound like it'll be an issue for this game though.

Man I don't know how I'm going to fit playing this game into my damn gaming schedule this year.

Too many games! But I'm definitely going to buy it day 1. Give us more like this guys!

Kotaku Ys VIII review is up: http://kotaku.com/ys-viii-lacrimosa-...iew-1798552332

Satisfying combat and wonderful music are Ys’ bread and butter. the basic components that have carried the series through multiple sequels and remakes over the past three decades. The stories haven’t been strong, but when they’re just a place to hang our hat while jamming and stabbing, it’s not a big deal.

Hell, we might have been better off. By adding an enthralling tale packed with rich, engaging characters and an ever-looming man-versus-nature conflict, Nihon Falcom has crafted a game that’s incredibly hard to put down. There are no real “Everything’s okay now, we can rest” moments in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. The struggle isn’t over until everyone escapes the island
I posted this in the Ys community thread before I realized this thread was here, so I'm just posting it here too.
