FIFA 18 UK launch sales down 25% (with caveats)

Electronic Arts has taken the No.1 spot in the UK charts with this year's FIFA, with PlayStation 4 taking the majority of its sales.

The PS4 edition accounted for 60% of all FIFA 18 copies sold - up from its 53% share of FIFA 17's launch. Gfk Chart-Track notes that this was partly assisted by the presence of official bundles on retail shelves.

Xbox One followed with more than a third of all sales. In fact, when combined the two consoles accounted for 97% of all FIFA 18 units shifted.

GfK Chart-Track observes that FIFA's launch sales were down by 25% year-on-year, and notes that this may be attributed to the rise of digital sales through the PlayStation and Xbox stores. Switch's digital store has also proved to be popular, so its sales of FIFA may be higher than the physical charts indicate.

It's also worth noting that FIFA 18 came out on Friday last week, while historically the series has always launched on a Tuesday. The lack of other major new releases meant its claim for the No.1 spot was in little danger, but it may also account for the 25% drop in sales given that it had four fewer days on shelves.

Digital huh? Does the UK not have any retailer discounts?

FIFA is usually very expensive to pre-order physically in the UK - £50-£55 roughly - until supermarkets cut the price on launch day. There was also a digital-only Icon Edition which might have suckered a few people (like me).

Doesn’t really say much, especially since it had fewer days on the shelves, I would bet it will probably get to the same LTD of FIFA 17 when all is said and done.

Well EA pulled an EA by having a 4-day early access for people who bought the more expensive Ronaldo/Icon edition digitally (basically you get the game on the normal tuesday but at a cost). Would not surprise me if this Fifa actually sold more than last year factoring that in.

It seems that FIFA 17 has been the only game in recent years released on a Tuesday over here. Others have been either Thursday or Friday.

Don't know where you lot are getting the "usual" release day of Tuesday.

Fewer days on the chart make more sense then "but digital"

Seriously. It seems foolish to even suggest that. Digital may be a growing part of the market, but absolutely no way will it account for anything close to ~25% of lost sales to account for the discrepancy.

"But the Switch digital store seems quite popular" - literally baseless speculation.

Hope this is true. Not one for games failure like at all, but I hope PES picked up rather. FIFA is content with their position. It has stagnated as a franchise.

It's always until this year been launched on a Tuesday in the US while we waited. I only know this as 15 and 16 where when the pound killed the USD and I was getting games from that PSN store. Then my brother was whining I had the game early.

I guess they did a cursory Google and got the US release dates.

People wanted that icon edition I guess lol

Edit: no but really, the rise of digital sales and being on the shelves for less days compared to last year is a logical explanation for this.

Deleted demo after few games. Game is too slow, sluggish, like there s some lag in controls, too much animations or something with engine. Two year in a row and i dont like gameplay at all.

Should check pes demo.

FIFA is the type of game that I like to dip in and out of, so the disc swapping is a pain. I'll be buying it digital this year, I'm sure others will too.

If people are like me, I'm to lazy to go to shops now as I'm getting older. I don't mind paying the extra for the convenience.

Just order from amazon or someone?

Personally will always order the cheapest - not paying our daft online prices in the UK

this is my first time buying FIFA digitally. i really don't care for physical releases anymore.
This is the first game that I haven't been able to find for £40. It's £50+ at most places.

paid £37 for it on PC on friday. that was the cheapest i found it. amazon wanted £50 for the standard physical PS4 version not including delivery. PSN wanted £60 for the standard version. Origin wanted £55 for the PC version.

Looks like marketing deal worked well again... good jump in sales for PS4 version.

Yeah and it was really only a "half" switch in marketing deal, since PS4 does not come with any exclusive content like with the Xbox One FIFA deals in the previous years.

I was really against digital last gen but with the good sales and the convenience I’m slowly being turned around. I’ve even considered day one AAA digital purchases but the prices are a bit of a joke in most cases but I guess you pay for that convenience.

Expected this given the ridiculous pricing everywhere. Not even one decent deal for the game. The cheapest price was like £47? What a joke.

Yea. Hopefully that put a dent in sales or else it might set a precedent. I'm not one of those people who complains that FIFA is a glorified patch each year but I straight up refuse to pay more than The Witcher 3 or MGSV for a game that was a year in development.

Nah that would made the drop slightly smaller, like 20% tops. Still a big drop.
Fifa basically had over 10 straight years growth - it's kind of obvious that "had" to have come to an end at some point.

At some point yes but nothing indicated that the train would come to a quick halt. It was likely the best selling WW game last year. Games that see that kind of growth do not see such a steep reduction in sales YOY. I guess the saving grace is that it is only one data point and we will see how it tracks by the end of the year.

Nope, PES 2018 launch numbers for all platforms was only around 2 or 3 times bigger than FIFA 18 on the Switch.

Less than half the time is a massive caveat... why not wait for 7 actual days of sales before making a comparison? Seems rather... pointless? There is no real data to be gathered from this.

It's amazing how poorly PES performs. I was speaking with a friend the other day and he didn't even know it was still being made.

Konami are terrible at advertising. I've never seen a single TV advertisement for MGS in my life.
