SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

Can all of this be done on a mac too or do you need to have a pc in order to do this?

There is no version of Hakchi that runs on MacOS. You could install Windows on your Mac through Bootcamp or a virtualization solution. The alternative would be to get everything together you need (Artwork, Hakchi, ROMs), put it on a USB stick and install this using a friends PC.

Would anyone be interested in CRT-style borders?

I think I may make some tighter ones, maybe with more wood paneling and dials.

v2.21b (internal version 2.0.21.32) has just this minute been released.

Cluster says the bug has been fixed.

Success. So here we go again.

v2.21b (internal version 2.0.21.32)

  • Better games compatibility for SNES Mini (updated database of preset IDs, better LoROM/HiROM detection).
  • Built in database of problem games, so hakchi2 will ask you to switch to 3rd party emulator automatically (e.g. RetroArch).
  • Original games are not using extra memory space anymore, so we have some extra space for additional games (thanks to DanTheMan827!)
  • "remove_thumbnails" mod no longer slows down SNES Mini's startup (thanks to brian91292!)
  • Bundled with new mod "snes_custom_filters" which allows to disable scanlines in CRT mode or enable bilinear filter in 4:3 mode. Please read mod description before install.
  • Bundled with new mod "extra_space". This is experimental mod for SNES Mini which moves your save-states data to unused partition of NAND flash. This partition is only 50MB in size but it will free some space for games because SNES Mini's save-states are huge. Please read mod description before install.
  • Bugfixes.

To update, simply drop the new files on top of your old files.

Be sure to do a "Kernel -> Flash custom kernel" this time.

Why didn't I think of that? That one's great.

I tried Doom but it doesn't run properly. Below the hud there is a line of pixels that are rendering something and it doesn't seem to be running at full speed. I know Doom on the SNES was slow, but it's not ment to be this slow.

Damn, I was looking forward to that one. It was listed as working on some list I saw. Maybe they only checked for boot.

Edit:
There is a little line of pixels below the display, but that is the only thing wrong. Add -no-lowlatency and -boost-fx 3 to get it running better. No low latency will put the rendering on another thread, boost fx will overclock the FX chip emulation.

Oh cool.

dial needs to be broken off to complete the effect
At least one of the bottom knobs is missing! 😝

I want to do a wood one and a trinitron.

Questions: Is there a .psd or template file I can use to get them just right for the pixel perfect and 4:3 sizes?

Also, for people to use them, should the live area be blank/transparent and should the end files be jpg or png?

There is a little line of pixels below the display, but that is the only thing wrong. Not enough to prevent you from playing the game if you like it (it’s a pretty poor Doom port). Add -no-lowlatency and -boost-fx 3 to get it running better. No low latency will put the rendering on another thread, boost fx will overclock the FX chip emulation.

Does this mean with the new update we can run games as is like Super Street Fighter 2 with no edits?

Certain games like Goof Troop, which were simple a HiROM/LoROM error will work now.

I don't know about Super Street Fighter 2, but give it a go! Worst that will happen is it doesn't work.

When I used -boost-fx with this game, it messed with the music and sound. Anyway to get around this?

Installed and flashed fine with the new version. As for how it works now overall - well, I'll report back as soon as I played a bit more but so far it's looking good.

I'm extremely insecure with how much f2p mobile games are encroaching on Nintendo

How do I use your PAL to NTSC patcher? I tried it with some games that had audio skipping, as I assumed they must be PAL but it seemed to not have worked since they continue to do so. I updated to 2.20.15 version of hakchi but I didnt flash anything...could that be it?

Find out if your game is HiROM or LoROM, pick the appropriate .ips file, use Lunar IPS to apply that patch to your ROM. Now add it fresh to hakchi (delete your old one in there) and good to go.

Will do, thanks

I want to try having an essential NES collection in my SNES Mini. I assume that installing Retroarch is obligatory for this.

I read somewhere that playing NES games through Retroarch cores is not as responsive as the default Canoe emulator. That it introduces Input Lag. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, is there a decent CRT filter solution for NES games emulated through Retroarch on the SNES Mini?

Thanks in advance guys.

So do I have to re-add all the games when I do this update?

Mine doesnt seem to like this new 2.21b, Ive downloaded the portable installer, made a copy of my 2.20 hakchi folder, overwritten it with the new files from the new release, plugged in and switched my mini on (light is on). Says waiting for snes mini when I go to flash custom kernel.

That's the way to do it in theory, right?

Question: Does the SFC/SNES mini have the NES emulator on it? Or would we need to put Retroarch on there for that? Would like to have FDS games alongside my SNES games.
