SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

Seems you have to do the hold reset / power button trick to flash the new kernel even on a hacked mini. I did anyway, and I got a warning about unknown checksum or something, do you want to proceed.

Wanted to make a Donkey Kong Country retro arcade cabinet overlay in the original Donkey Kong arcade style.

Glad to see more people joining the custom-border squad. Keep it up!
Soon we will have a pretty big collection.

I did one for Super GnG. Original is from John.Merrit.

Would anyone be interested in CRT-style borders?

I tried one too the other day. Not perfect yet, tho. But would like to see more!

Edit: Is the new update save now?

Hey Robin can I get some clarification on making the borders work per your instructions in the OP?

You say the p8173_ownbgs file needs to get into /etc/preinit.d which is in the root of the device or in the /hackchi/rootfs folder?

You say the snes will use a new map which is writable, but what map is that?

And then you say copy a folder ( which folder, the one I want to have edited lets say 04_dot ? ) and rename the files. I have your chrono trigger map, can I just rename those files to the 04_dot name files and have it work?

So if I don't have any storage left I won't be able to use save states and rewind. But would I be able to use the "normal" save fonction of a game that has it?

Mine doesnt seem to like this new 2.21b, Ive downloaded the portable installer, made a copy of my 2.20 hakchi folder, overwritten it with the new files from the new release, plugged in and switched my mini on (light is on). Says waiting for snes mini when I go to flash custom kernel.

That's the way to do it in theory, right?

Hmm. I open hakchi, go to flash custom kernel, plug in the USB and then hold reset before turning power on. Let go of reset once it starts patching.

That Super Ghouls N Ghosts one is nice. Was going to do one, but that's perfect.

I did a step by step guide in case someone needs or missed it:

2 guides now and I still dont get itm as in why use PCM or SNES sound.

Yeah I was thinking you didnt need the reset trick if you were already on a custom.

A few of us moderators were discussing the attempted derail earlier in the thread around the subject of piracy, and I thought it might be fruitful to weigh in on this. First, all of us have better things to do with our lives than micromanaging this stuff by doing the Spanish Inquisition about where people are getting their SNES roms or whether they're doing it for games they own or whatever. Our priority will always be to crack down on overt piracy: people posting links or asking for links to pirated material.

That being said, if there is confusion, we did not intend to provide a space for barely-concealed piracy, even of older games, even of not commercially available games. This is not a moral judgment about people being bad people, it's even-handed enforcement of the rules, it's about protecting the site from liability, and frankly it's about trying to surface useful technical discussion. It's also about preventing derails from people who are extremely angry about the existence of emulation and determined to make sure no one can talk about it.

I would ask that the thread be primarily focused on the technical aspects of hacking the console and making it work. Posts that are basically "Hey, I got my setup running, look at my hundreds of games" or "Wow, this $500 cart game I've never heard of before is really good" or even "I'm going to get a complete set of fan translated RPGs" are basically thinly veiled piracy bragging in a lot of cases. Maybe they aren't, maybe a given poster has a lot of games (I have 110 or so SNES + SFC carts, we have collectors here), but a lot of posts here seem to suggest "I downloaded a complete pack of SNES roms what should I play?" and that's not really a discussion we're interested in having. I'm not interested in calling out individual people or making this about individual people, I'm interested in shaping the future of the thread.

In addition, when people post about C7 errors (bad rom / dump errors), it's exceedingly obvious that they're posting about a pirated ROM. I'm not going to get into drawing a line between dumping your own ROM versus downloading a ROM of a cartridge you own versus piracy or whatever, again, I'm not interested in what you do in your personal life. But the thread shouldn't be spending time tech supporting people who are bad at piracy, regardless of the ethical position you take on it.

My guess would be the good to bad balance in the thread is like 75-25, which is good, and the OP is probably the single best source for useful information on the internet. Now let's make it a little better. My advice: If you're posting for help, please don't bother if the help you're asking for is obviously piracy advice even if you don't use those words. If you're providing help, thank you, you have the patience of a saint, but try not to engage posters who seem to be steering the thread in the direction of being a thread about what to do with a complete SNES rom pack. If someone is either shitting up the thread or overtly pirating, please report to a moderator (including me). I suspect we will be deleting some posts going forward if they seem to misunderstand this advice -- deletion is the less invasive option we have and it makes it easier to get a thread back on track.

And as always, we have no time or patience for either overt piracy OR people trying to make the thread a discussion about the ethics of piracy. No need to respond to this post, or quote it for acknowledgement -- just go about your business. I hope the clarification helps!

I like some of these borders, but I do not know if I could have much around the screen. I think it would be really distracting, especially if it looked like a still frame from the game I am playing! I do like the TV ones though.

Did anyone manage to find or share one of those lovely CRT Sony borders like this one adapted to the SNES mc requirements?

I think I may make some tighter ones, maybe with more wood paneling and dials.

THIS SO MUCH PLZ. Only with some Sony or Toshiba 90s model like the one I found.

I wonder if the Super Game Boy borders will fit to make one of those custom SNESC borders?

With some work. I haven't looked into it yet but SNESC borders are a clean 720p yeah? Pixel scaling won't be an easy 1:1 if so.

You'd need to rejig it for widescreen anyway though, so I think it should be doable. Depends on what the original border depicted really.

I'll give one a try.

Is there a recommendation for how many MB of free space is needed for saves? I've currently used 145.6/218.6

On-battery saves? Essentially zero. Save states for rewinding? ~500KB per save. More saves will make hakchi show the "218" number getting smaller, not the "145" number getting bigger because of how the storage is setup.

The SGB borders that have repeating patterns along the edges won’t be so bad, you can just repeat them more. Something like the house scene would be harder, especially given we need to make 4:3 and 8:7 ones.

Nevermind Robin I figured it all out and it works!! Chrono Trigger border woohoo! And I dont need to replace borders, so how many can you put in?

If you can find a good hi res pic, post it and I’ll see if I can work with it, it’s hard to find those head on shots in high resolution

You mean that "normal" saves from a game take essentially zero space?

edit : by "normal" I mean a save performed in-game, not through the emulator

Borders are the only thing I haven't messed with yet. The CRT TV borders are changing my mind. What is the best W10 FTP client nowadays?

If you're going to be FTPing in to your SNES Mini, please be sure to set your client's transfer limit to 1 file at a time. The SNES Mini is very picky about transfering files, especially if you hammer it, and I have seen more than one case of corruption due to FTP transfer.

Right, the amount of work if takes would really depend on the original border. I'd love to create something based on this one:

A little trickier than a repeating pattern but it should be doable with some edits. You'd lose some stuff too though, so it might not be worth it. I mean the fun stuff isn't on the left and right side...

.... Rey, I totally forgot you're the one who archived all these borders in the first place! Thanks dude. <3

Good tip! I will make sure to do that.

Install the module from Modules menu and it will tell you the global arguments you need.

Thanks, but I mean on just the Retroarch'd games. I can disable it on the Rettroarch menu but I can't save the configuration so it comes back again next time I load those games.

Edit an ini file maybe?

Large thread but just wondering if anyone has gotten Tetris Attack to work?

Tetris Attack works fine. Its Panel de Pon thats broken.

I made a collection of SGB borders here if you want to use some:

If anyone makes a pack or something, please include a readme and credit the site/link.

FileZilla has malware issues that to my knowledge have still not been solved. Be careful, or even better switch to something else like WinSCP.

I mean, its off topic, but that article is not talking about malware issues with filezilla, its talking about a fake filezilla that is probably not distributed via the official filezilla homepage.

e: if russian hackers want the access credentials to my snes mini more power to them

Here are a couple more TV Themes:

A vintage one:

And a Sony One:

How are these added to the Snes? I went into FTP and downloaded the backgrounds folder and also added the file mentioned in the sticky. Is there a certain process i need to go to add the borders?

Agreed, however the C7 error doesn't necessarily mean a bad/pirated dump.

I ripped my Goof Troop cartridge yesterday via the Retrode, which I then verified with various emulators and got this error. However the issue seems to be fixed now with Hakchi, just saying. On the other side it is the only game for which I face this error.

But yeah, many are taking it lightly and making it a bit too obvious. We can agree on that. :lol
