SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

The black border between the gameplay and the red border belongs to the game. Starwing has some giant borders.

Source.

Edit: I edited it again.
Made the whole thing darker and made spotlights on the left and right moon, so that only these parts glow.
Pretty happy about that result.

Is there a way to get borders working in RetroArch?

Edit: Nevermind. I saw the Github release notes for Retroarch that it doesn't work.

If I'm not going to be adding any more games in the near future there's really no need to upgrade hakchi or retroarch, right? The games I've add thus far are running smoothly.

Did today's hakchi update change the amount of storage that it's reporting to you from your SNES.

I went from 150MB/244MB to 63MB/226.2MB. All my games are all still on here, nothing's changed.

Ok, team square. I have most of my games covered but I'm missing just a few before I can go all the way square.

Dracula X, DQ1+2, V, VI, FFMQ, Lufia, MMPR Fighting, MK2, NBA Jam TE, Pilotwings, Secret of Evermore, Sunset Riders and UMK3.

Sooooo, mostly there. If anybody has the dimensions for the square I can give it a shot and just post my edits when I'm done.

all of mine are 228 x 204 but I haven't done any of those games (and probably won't with the mmmmmmmaybe exception of NBA Jam TE if I really want to squeeze it on there, but then I have to resize all my thumbnails again)

e:
I mean, the boxart for NBA Jam is pretty much just crop to square for the actual artwork part

US Super SF2 seems to work in this new one, as well as Seiken Densetsu 3.

However global command line -filter 2 -magfilter 0 seems to just turn off scanlines entirely.

Can anyone also confirm with SD3? That’s one of the big three I’m hoping to work properly, as well as Terranigma and Treasure of the Rudras.

Eh... I tried both games. Seiken loads fine, but still doesn't use high-res mode. Super Street Fighter 2 doesn't boot at all. Black screen and back to the menu.

Maybe Angelic was using Retroarch and he didn't realize? :S

So what would happen if I tried to flash my NES mini with a SNES kernel?

Edit: Nvm...

ClusterM said:
You'll brick NES Mini with SNES Mini's kernel.
But you can transform NES Mini into SNES Mini using .hsqs file (nand-b image). You need to pus SNES Mini's .hsqs file into /var/lib/hakchi/firmware

I don't know what is lesser-known to you, but here are some titles that sometimes barely get mentioned:

Firepower 2000
This is pretty much the Jackal (NES) sequel we never got. Although this one plays more like a traditional Shoot'em up.
IhmWCX9.png

Firepower 2000 is the US rename for Super SWIV, which was a port of the Amiga game SWIV, which itself was a spiritual sequel to the horizontal shmup Silkworm.

If shmups/shooters are your thing, there are a bunch of lesser known ones worth checking out.

Metal Warriors is a LucasArts game that is their, err, 'homage' to Cybernator / Assault Suit Valken.

Earth Defence Force shares the name with D3's giant bug killing series, but has nothing to do with them. It's a trad horizontal shooter, but nicely made.

Thunder Spirits is a SNES port of Thunderforce III.

Phalanx is kind of a port but not really of the arcade game Air Buster and PCE/Megadrive game Aero Blaster. It's also famous for having spectacularly bad box art.

Bio Metal is another fairly generic horizontal shmup with early 90s Euro dance music, which you'll either find endearing or awful.

Aero Fighters is a great vertical shmup and a port of a Neo Geo arcade game. Well worth playing.

As for overlooked games, Batman Returns is a really fun beat-em-up with a really great presentation.

I think it's the only Konami game based on a movie, in fact.

Not SNES but don’t forget about this gem!

How’d it go with the LG TV updates btw, did it work out for you?

Darius Twin is one of the few 2 player co-op shmups on the SNES.
A lot of other shmups that originally had 2 player co-op had to cut it for the SNES port, like UN Squadron.

IMO the Parodius games are qualitywise head and shoulders above everything else on the system

Been gone from this thread maybe a day. Why are you guys posting such tiny covers?

Whats the point in huge resolution covers when the snes mini is not going to render anything bigger than ~300 pixels square?

Holy shit, I'm not really into adding one of these for an individual game but this right here is hot.

I might get around to hacking this thing on the weekend but I haven't messed with it yet. How does it work with the borders? Do you have a set limit and all the additional ones have to replace an existing border? I fully intend to put Robin's SFC box wire frame thingy border on mine.

I managed to find a Goemon 2 box someone else had made & knocked three together myself. They're a bit quick & dirty, but I'm pretty happy with them. (It's my first try at making boxart...)

Any good translation for those?

Does the game go past this view port for menus or other things? As the frames are just .png files with a transparency cutout I wonder if you can snug up the borders here by covering part of the emulator window. Another thing that might be fun to try is a border with irregular edges or rounded corners.

When I get home I'll test this on the FFVI frame I'm working on and see if I can get some additional room for the art on the 4:3 frame as the game leaves a margin on the left and right edges.

Got any sports game recommendations aside from NBA Jam? I had fun with ken Griffey as a kid but not sure how it holds up.

The original Griffey still holds up in my opinion due to the fast and fun game play. Another fun baseball game my brother and I loved was Super batters Up. Graphics are "old" and not on par with Griffey but the fun factor is awesome for a baseball fan.

Basketball has to be Super Tecmo NBA and football Tecmo Super Bowl.

I dont know enough about SD3 to know how the menus should look but I managed the intro fine and took control of my character all fine.

SSF2 boots and plays fine for me in the snes mini emu, no retroarch, im not using that for anything. 100% not joking, I've fought a few stages and it plays fine.

That's the reason nobody did that before. It's not possible. The emulator window is fixed. The reason why we cut out the middle part (picture below) is to reduce the file size of the image, 'cause you can't see that part anyways. NOT to give the emulator some window. The only exception is the .thumbnail. If you leave the middle part white, it will be transparent.

These rules apply to the intern emulator at least.

Those of you enjoying the Goemon games, check out Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon for the N64 (here's hoping it's on the N64 Classic). Probably my favorite N64 game and it does a lot of things better than Ocarina of Time despite being a similar game that came out a year or so before. It's an action/adventure with platforming and RPG elements, great characters, fantastic music and some of the weirdest Japanese humor you'll ever find.

I even made a LTTP topic about it a while back:

Ah, okay. Using transparency doesn't actually reduce the file size vs. white pixels but still probably makes sense as a best practice because it won't blend into any color of background while you're editing.

You sure you weren't trying to reply to the same person I was replying to? Because I've known about those games for decades :p

Add --retroarch to the command line in hakchi (where it says for advanced users only)

I added --retroarch to the end of the command line for Terranigma, but now the game just doesn't launch at all (the screen goes black for a second, then it returns to the main game select screen). Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

So if I installed all my stuff using the first "final" version released... Is there any reason why I would want to reflash using the latest version?

If you're interested in any of the benefits of the latest version, that's more than enough reason. I generally recommend the latest version of any software, so I would often suggest folks take the latest stable release.

What's new:
  • Better games compatibility for SNES Mini (updated database of preset IDs, better LoROM/HiROM detection).
  • Built in database of problem games, so hakchi2 will ask you to switch to 3rd party emulator automatically (e.g. RetroArch).
  • Original games are not using extra memory space anymore, so we have some extra space for additional games (thanks to DanTheMan827!)
  • "remove_thumbnails" mod no longer slows down SNES Mini's startup (thanks to brian91292!)
  • Bundled with new mod "snes_custom_filters" which allows to disable scanlines in CRT mode or enable bilinear filter in 4:3 mode. Please read mod description before install.
  • Bundled with new mod "extra_space". This is experimental mod for SNES Mini which moves your save-states data to unused partition of NAND flash. This partition is only 50MB in size but it will free some space for games because SNES Mini's save-states are huge. Please read mod description before install.
  • Bugfixes.

So all I need to do is unzip the new version, copy my game folder from the old Hackshi folder to the new one and select dump custom rom in the menu?

All the custom borders stuff will stay on the console?
