"We quit our jobs, remortgaged our houses" - Cuphead Developer

Bwahahaha! Best bump of 2017.

Holy hell this thread is embarrassing.

It is going to be fun to read through the comments and see just how many people really thought that this game was going to be dead on arrival just because "It is on Xbox One exclusively!" (even though it was also available on PC as well, to which it was still about 50/50 between the two platforms).

Hope we get to see the new house soon (or at least something to show that the remortgage was taken care of ^_^)

So happy for them. Glad they had the balls and trusted their gut to know that if done right it would do well. Look forward to their next products. They're now a game studio.

It depresses me to think of how many stories like this end up in failure and debt, but that's just how business and ambition goes.

Wtf at the amount of people that thought this game would bomb. It was always gonna be a hit from the first time it was shown. Amazingly stylistic platformer. Wtf were people drinking?

What? I mean what?
I game can always bomb, you can't predict everything.
And you can't predict if a game will sale well.

Heck, Night in the Woods game had a pretty sad release day when they discovers that their playstation version of the game wasn't updated and was still the beta.

Or like Cosmic Star Heroine released day was a disaster and it showed in the sales which is extremely sad (and the devs are also Gaffer) You can read the whole article here.

Obviously you know nothing about game development.

The developers themselves were not sure if it would be successful. It has style, but it's also tough as nails. Plenty of great indie games bomb every year, even ones by talented developers whose previous games were hits.

I will gladly eat crow. I thought it was going to be a pretty but very shallow game. The fact that it took so long between first showing and release made me think all the hype over the art style would be gone. So I definitely mispredicted 1 million sales.

Though having not yet played it, I'm still not sure if anyone will think of it fondly in two years or if it's more of a fad like Fez. But great news for the devs either way.

So you're going 2 for 2 with eating crow then. You haven't played it and despite the glowing reviews and universal praise, you think it's just a fad?

Fez wasn't a fad, it was a game that played to its launch and having players work together on things. Phil Fish knew full and well about being taking advantage of the zeitgest Fez was in. It was genius.

I knew the game would be a hit

It managed to get me hooked and I am the one who never get excited about indie titles ever.

If the hook managed to catch this fish, then it catches the general public

Hell no, this game is like Ori and a true classic IMHO.

I thought the same.
I thought it had been too long since it was first unveiled and that the novelty would have worn off with every showing by release.
I also thought run&gun levels would be half assed and very basic stuff, with cycling backdrops and those generic small enemies with simple patterns repeated throughout (based on that one level that was shown)

Wrong and wrong.

In two years ? This game is a modern classic already.
Also going for it is the fact that it isn't held back by the tech in any way.
It will never look or sound dated (from a technical POV I mean) the presentation is as good as it could possibly be and this isn't going to change when next gen rolls in, or the one after that.

2017 will be remembered as the year Cuphead launched. :p

Fez wasn't a "fad". It was a great game that people liked a lot and think fondly of. The only thing that hurts Fez is how much some people dislike Phil Fish.

You really seem to have a bone to pick with highly successful indie games, eh?

Yes, that's where the majority of sales will come from for this game. The argument simply is that, based on other niche titles, the game would do better if it was on PS4 than on Xbox One. And that argument has been raised in light of the financial burden the developers have taken on to create this game.

If you think quirky indie titles on Xbox One will suddenly do great because of that, keep believing.

It is so rewarding when hard work and risk taking pay off. Congrats guys, you deserve it

Yeah but this is more of an exception rather than a rule. People shouldn't see this and think they could pull it off as well.

Not to say i'm not glad it succeeded. Game was a blast and I even bought the soundtrack.

Shitty dig at Hello Games, they've shown better post-release support than any other dev this generation, still 100% free, and they haven't kept quiet in any way, trailers before every update and the waking titan thing was huge. The game is great now too, so far I'm almost 300 hours in, other games will struggle to get me to spend even 30 hours playing them.

Anyhow, I hope it works out for the Cuphead devs, the game is extremely well made.

I disagree, people should see this and try to do something like that. Of course not everyone is talented and hard working, and some people just don't have luck, but a lot of games where people really put their sweat blood and money, and with some luck and talent, succeeded.

I also understand that a lot of good games bombed, but this is with any business. You need to fail several times before hitting a home run. The normal is to fail in the first try

Plenty of great stylistic games have bombed, it’s not an unreasonable prediction. Thankfully it didn’t happen this time.

Not really. Maybe if you don't play other games you might think that but nothing touches Halo 5 , dying light or Gears 4

It's fine to fail if you have something to fall back on. But they quit their jobs for over two years (which makes it more difficult to come back to any major profession) and put everything they owned on the line. What if the game didn't succeed? Game development isn't a simple matter, and you never really get a clear picture of how good a game is until late into development. There are plenty of stories about how people put everything they had into a game and failed. Just check out the indie dev thread for some examples.
Anyways, my main point is that people shouldn't rush to drop everything and go into full-time indie dev status after hearing about how these guys succeeded.

So I guess no one has built the wall of shame yet?
Gaf is slipping

Pretty sure that's frowned upon right now.

I'd say Cuphead definitely stands out the most with its art style. Plenty of folk will scoff at the usual indies using the Unity engine or flat/pixel-based visuals. I felt Cuphead had the potential to appeal to a larger audience and it does. I've seen friends who would never touch an indie game jumping in to play this game.

Hindsight bias admittedly, but there was an impressive amount of effort put into this game and as a result, it paid off tremendously.
