I'm half expecting it to be Destiny/GR:W situation where it sells incredibly well in spite of a large section of GAF writing it off.

Or it wasn't coming together. Don't think people realize just how late in the process MTs get added to a game.

Perhaps you're right. However I still maintain EA's increasing fixation on loot boxes as they seem to be included prominently in all their games now made the decision to ax the project easier for them rather than trying to save it. It's a StarWars game was it's commercial success ever going to be a concern?

So? You got underperforming online-focused games as well - like For Honor iirc.

For Honor is doing fine. The thing is, with Gaas model what ends up happening is that even if not a lot of people buy or stick with the game, few that do end up spending a lot on them. These companies are okay with that. Of course what they really want is for them to sell a lot and lot of people to stick around to spend even more money like Overwatch. It is very hard to do those things with single player games and even if they try to do it they end up loot boxes in single player games and gamers (or at least vocal gamers) are not cool with it. At least not yet.

So EA already has a Destiny competitor in the works from Bioware. It's unlikely they would want two.

Maybe they are going all in on Open World with Lootboxes, PVP and Virtual Currency since "Linear" was specifically mentioned as an issue.
Probably something along the lines of Shadow of Mordor with a primary online focus.

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Destiny 2 mediocre sales tell a lot about how large that "section of GAF" really is.
That game had a peak CC users at 1.3 mil and even in spite of being a drop from the last's debut sales, was the biggest launch at retail this year last I checked. Activision is laughing all the way to the bank at the idea that Destiny 2 had "mediocre" sales.

Which is why I think it's likely that the game may not have been coming together as well as expected. Literally the only footage ever released was this:

EA just like activision, sets studio to only towards that makes a profit nothing more unique or cool new IP's for taking a risk.

Activision in particular have put all studio's on CoD...nothing else. All talents at Raven Software or High Moon Studios and even Radical Entertainment. All of them are sucked up or merged to just CoD stuff. Nothing more, same with EA buying studio's in the end they will be killed of.

It is a shame, it is a shame that they continue with focus groups..that shit should not happen period.

For Honor was one of the best selling games during the first half of the year. I don’t think that is a good example. You could argue ME:A but that still sold fairly well, much better than most highly acclaimed titles this year. Prior to August the best selling game for the year was Wildlands.

If the reason for the cancellation was due to it being linear then I’m never playing an EA title ever again. Can’t believe what is happening to this industry.

Hope everyone who lost their job find their feet.

.

Probably has something to do with both companies being public.

Sad for Hennig though. Two failed projects (if you count UC4) in a row. Wish she made another LoK game, but that ship has sailed I guess. Not particularly saddened by not getting the Star Wars game though, tbh the whole franchise has been shamelessly milked and would be far more interested in something more original.

As if linear games are bad? They just have to be done well. EA executives only look at figures.

The Last of Us was very linear, still a 10/10 in most peoples' books.

Exactly. I don’t mind if they’re going for something akin to the Witcher surely the reason it was linear was for the sake of telllng the story they wanted to tell?

Also am I missing something as to how this affects Bish did he work for them?

First and foremost; This sucks for everyone that loses their job/are unable to move. Sorry for you folks and i hope you land on your feet.

Secondly, the gaming industry is at a crossroads here that I as a gamer (although in the minority im sure) is very disappointed about. Moving towards online-only lootboxin' season passin' teamworkin' games as a servicein' products is the worst possible thing I can imagine. My cup of tea is a refined 8-20 hour experience, something this seems like a milestone in killing.

I can't see if it was mentioned on the last 28 pages (lol), but a quick google search of Visceral tells me the first game they developed was Future Cop: LAPD...

... aka one of my all-time favourites.

Well, that one stings (although truth be told, I didn't know they'd developed it until now).

So EA have killed Bullfrog (makers of one of my all-time favourite games, Theme Hospital); Westwood (makers of one of my all-time favouite games, Tiberian Sun) and now Visceral. Alongside the way they've gutted Maxis and Criterion.

What a day! I hope all those affected land on their feet.

I think you guys are kinda missing the point when they stay that stuff.

It's not like the games will be bad. It's just in this market that's not what most people are buying in droves these days. If anything EA is seeing the market trends and are reacting.

Man, didn't Dead Space 3 even end with a cliffhanger? It's unfortunate we'll never see 4 without the forced BS shoved into the 3rd game.
