Sociopaths who want to spew hate speech from the rooftops don’t have ideas, they just want to be evil. They are deemed sociopathic and get deplatformed so that society can prosper, and make more money.
What about ignorants who "spew hate speech" but can maybe have their minds changed? You're lumping in your idea of what hate speech is with automatically being a sociopath, which is hardly a proven idea I think. Some people are just stupid. Maybe their minds can't be changed. But again, get it out in the open instead of forcing people to sit and fester.

Again ...

What are you afraid of?

We’re talking about sociopaths here, people who are just fucking evil.

The other ones learn to socialize.

I actually don't know what you're arguing about. I've read through your comments, but what I think folks are saying is that, while Twitter is a hell landscape already, that it doesn't become an overtly racist hate stream that results in creating an even more coarse discourse.

Yes more people should read up on Daryl Davis.

I just don’t get why “free speech” always boils down to wanting to conduct hate speech and never anything more.

It is never actually about free speech, it’s about freedom to hate speech.

I'm a moderator on two urbanism forum. Unless it's obvious spam or threats, I let people talk freely even if it pisses off others.
And that's fine.

Twitter will always have rules that go farther than the US "free speech" doctrine no matter how much Elon over-uses the term in his BS. You will be banned for saying certain things, at minimum because of things like EU regulations that go farther than US law... but also because, it's a company.. not a government.. and unless Elon wants to run the place like a charity they'll be beholden to advertisers and every other avenue of profit. Let alone civil torts.

Why everyone trusts this random corny rich dude is beyond me.

It already is though. If it's against the right narrative targets.
Don't even know what that means... but I think it's OK to say you can't have hate speech and unfiltered racist shit here - and presume Twitter should subscribe to the same or greater speech limits based on their influence and impact on society.

How many leftists are sending death threats, which is clearly illegal. Just think about JK Rowling this week, who actually reported many tweets and Twitter said it was not hate. Basically death threats.

It's all about the crazy moderation that favours "progressives" and cancel normies. Elon bought Twitter because of Babylon Bee being banned for "hate speech". When there was absolutely none of it.

It's telling that all of the pushback to this is ideological (and, arguably, fanciful). Elon's done a great job with every company he's led.

Last year, but Neogaf is still historically left of center, it's just the left has gone illiberal as they say.

You joke but you know that's not true. If he actually implements what he has said then it going get MUCH worse. Especially if he allows the Russian propaganda machine to start pumping again. Same goes for the political misinformation that was rampant after the last presidential election and the attempted insurrection at the Capitol.

And that's not mentioning the fact that he might losses the restrictions on hate speech. If he does that then Twitter will see a mass exodus of companies and advertisers because they won't want to be associated with that kind of content.
Did you are this empathetic with all the conservative voices silenced?

That's kind of how free speech works, the nice mainstream stuff we all agree on doesn't need to be protected, the extreme stuff we don't like does. The problem is who decides what's extreme? that can change with the times. What if you find yourself against how the mainstream thinks one day, and you want to express an 'extreme' view? That's why it's better if its all protected and we all get to speak, and we accept it might hurt some people as a lesser evil

You forgot the air quotes.

No reason to come up with strawman arguments. I think it's understandable what generally "outside the norm" speech is and what isn't. We have a lot of bots, trolls, and general shit stains from all stripes on twitter that use the platform to amplify their bullshit. I actually don't think much will change, despite Elon's rhetoric. It's just smart business not to let it turn into some racist cesspool, or overwhelmed with "alternate facts" saying Putin is strong and Xi is awesome or whatever you deal with walking through the comments on that site.

The way how the twittersphere is rejecting a free speech activist like Elon pretty much demonstrates that the platform is far from neutral. Twitter holds way too much power over the shaping of America's political landscape. It is about time that it is transformed into a true marketplace of ideas, a place where political views get fair representation and opposition is not banned into oblivion. Twitter reintroduced ostracism into modern democracies and created an atmosphere of fear.

It was about time somebody liberated us from this yoke. Elon Musk has done us all a great favor by restoring true democratic public dialogue to Western democracies.

The idea of "hate speech" is to establish one of the boundaries of what is free speech. People like to push those boundaries because to them it proves that they actually have free speech. You happen to like that boundary because it conforms to your ideology about other issues that we can't get into.

Of course, there are other legal boundaries, such as the classic of yelling fire. I haven't seen anyone argue that should be allowed, though I'm sure some do.

Also though, I haven't seen Elon claim his Twitter will be completely open and adhere to free speech absolutism. I'm sure it will still have restrictions based on some common ideals of moral decency instead of political identity.

The problem is how broad that definition has been made. Twitter should just give a list of words you can't say and leave it at that.

I bet there will be a "Reesetera Twitter" made asap in aftermath of this.

I think that’s a safe bet. Investors will want to get something built up quickly, especially if Musk opens Twitter back up to hate, abuse, shitty politics, etc.

I’m interested in seeing what all happens. Twitter is only like the seventh or eighth most used social media in the US, but many are elevating far beyond what it is (calling it a de facto public square, etc, when it’s difficult to even reach many in it, or share more than a brain fart).

I also wonder if opening it up would effectively kill the existing Twitter alternatives. Kind of consolidate all of the types that traffic Parler, Gab, whatever The Donald became, etc.

Also really wish I had bought the $10k in shares I was mulling at the start of the pandemic.
