Star Fox Wii U at E3 by Retro? [Rumour]

Sounds reasonable, and I want to believe. A Retro Star Fox is something I have always wanted to see. Given Retro's track record for reviving dormant Nintendo franchises, I think they could pull this off well.

Unfortunately it's not Overkill, the true kind of current gen rails shooters.

HotD isn't a railshooter. Semantics, but the term railshooter refers to a different kind of gameplay, where you still have freedom of movement in the X,Y plane.

Did DKC:Returns really wow anyone? It sold like hot cakes, but there was nothing different about it. Very much the DKC formula and people loved them for it.

Same thing could happen to Star Fox. Just great artistry and horsepower can provide the "wow" factor, but even if there's not, retro revivals like NSMB & DK Returns still succeeded tremendously.

For those saying "I don't want Star Fox to be an on-rails shooter," I just have to scratch my head. STAR FOX IS AN ON RAILS SHOOTER! Maybe you just don't want a Star Fox game? Because that's like demanding in a new F-Zero that Captain Falcon gets out of his car between races and has a gun and shoots people and shit.

As for Retro, yes they're talented. Some people also overestimate them, based on their ONE great Metroid Prime game. But other than Metroid, what have they done? They've made a 2D Donkey Kong and (I think) the retro tracks for Mario Kart 7. So, something like a "retro" Star Fox rail shooter wouldn't be beneath them. It would actually FIT them.

The big achievement of Donkey Kong Country Returns Was to live up expectations - being considered on par with the work of Rare, which was a crazy challenge actually - and being able to output some great artistic design in every level - better than New Super Mario Bros Wii. The gameplay also was very good. Intuitive and not clumsy while playing. The only point they deceived me is the soundtrack composition. But the challenge was against Dave Wise and Eveline Fischer and so it was forcefully a bit of a mission impossible from the very beginning from this point of view.

Oh, and the game was hard. FINALLY a hard Nintendo game after a while. Many people loved the level of difficulty.

My sources tell me this is true, and Retro's reimagining is very story focused. It's heavy inspired by EVA, especially the last film.

Knowing how nintendo picks developers I can easily believe this rumor. Instead of zelda they'd likely get StarFox as the closest possible denominator. Also it makes some sense since StarFox was released on 3ds to get the franchise in people's head. I hope Retro makes it cool. I would like the furry taken out and replaced with real people who's codenames happen to be animals. Like "fox".

That would be cool. Also didn't retro hire some uncharted artists and other people from next gen consoles? All for a star fox title... I didn't expect that but oh well.

It's kinda weird cycle.

People don't want Star Fox to be made by Retro because it hasn't gotten a good game since 64... but how will it get a good game if people won't put devs like Retro to handle it?

Oh so it's shit that people who never watch mecha anime eat up? :p

I can't tell if you people are joking or not anymore.

On the other hand I was pretty bummed by Kid Icarus too and ended up liking that game.

But if starfox is a straight up shooter eh. Kind of want to see Starfox: Assault well done

What's with people being so down on a StarFox rail shooter? I've been waiting for a new, good, proper StarFox game since 1997. I'm super hyped for this.

Because giving the game as-is would be rather shallow and to be honest, lacking. Even N64 knows this so they added all-range mode.

Note: Star Fox SNES and 64 are praised because they are GOOD games, not because they are rail shooters.

If they use Assault's style of multiplayer, I'm all for it. Best multiplayer in the series. Has the best music in the series too.

Star Fox is not what I'd want Retro putting their talents toward, but I'm sure it would be great.

I'd rather them work on a new open world DK game (like DK 64) or maybe a Waverace game or something...

Starfox is alright but honestly, it's never been ALL that great to begin with as far as i am concerned...

This would be my wish as well. As a Donkey Kong game it would be highly successful, especially at launch, but for such a game they could still use strenghts that also made Metroid Prime. Unlike Starfox.

So, "Star Fox: Press 'A' To Skip" is the working title then? :/

Great artistry, and living up to the original & 64 is pretty much exactly what I want and what I think the series needs. I did think DKC:Returns was friggin hard and Star Fox could use some of that too.

They've rebooted Metroid. Rebooted DK. Worked on Mario Kart... Another re-boot makes sense and Star Fox needs it. It used to be a pretty important franchise. That FX chip in the SNES vs Genesis days brought amazing visuals back in the day -- on top of the game being really good. Just it really stalled out after the N64 era.

I can't tell if you people are joking or not anymore.

Look, animals that fly planes is alright in the 64 era. But now they should just reboot it with humans. BTW it seems the EVA thing was a joke. So it's still up in the air this rumor. I hope someone at Retro is just doing a bate and switch. And we get Metriod, a new IP or zelda.

Yup.

I'm pretty sure Eat does write for somewhere, but then again this is the guy who contributed to the Mass Effect 3 Krogan asshole thread. So I wasn't sure. :(

Those were better Mass Effect days.

I dont know anything about what Retro is up to. Nintendo is a fortress of secrets and like hell any would trickle down to Australia.

I'd rather have Retro doing something else than starfox.

Not that starfox needs to die, but, there are a lot of other devs that ip can be outsourced to.

Same. Star Fox is in need of rescuing, but please let Retro do something else. Since when would Star Fox be "a project everyone wants us to do" ?

I wanna see a version of Star Fox where they're all depraved sexual fiends and they end up all dressing up as humans and start fucking in a massive orgy.

With that said, anything Retro touches turns to gold. Can't wait to see what they've been up to.

Why is everyone repeating Kid Icarus? The flying parts are only superficially similar to Star Fox; they don't really play anything alike.

EDIT: And Sin & Punishment, for that matter.

This, people ramming this need to shut up. Star Fox and Kid Icarus on rails stages are two totally different beasts.
One has a core and addictive gameplay were every point counts and the other is a shallow on rails gameplay experience with epic scenes and giant setpieces that resents on higher difficulties. The core and fun of Kid Icarus is in the on foot stages, not the flying ones, something that Star Fox has never done well.

And Sin and Punishment is totally different from those two. I think Treasure would do a fun Star Fox, that while being on rails sadly will not be like Star Fox, and graphically it will resent.

Even if this rumour is probably fake the good thing about choosing Retro would bring to Star Fox the western feeling of NOT a western game, BUT it would create the Star Fox that was impactful and mostly loved by western audiences, because they are the typical developer that likes to centre in the roots of the game that western audiences love most about them and then exapand them. Retro did this for Metroid, they did it also for DKC, and even Next Level Games did the same thing with Punch-Out!!
Not only that, but being Retro the game would be amazing artistically and graphically.

BTW If there had been a rumour of Retro doing DKC before it was showed, people would have call it that Retro deserves more and all that shit they are basically saying here, when the important thing here is that if given Star Fox is Retro giving the most of them trying to save the franchise. If the game is done and is excellent people will talk differnt about Retro and Star Fox.

Interesting...it recently hit me that the name "Retro" studios might be fitting since they revive dormant IPs.

Anyways, hoping it will be as amazing the Primes or godly as DKCR.

Actually, I want the godly revival :p

I'm pumped for an actual Starfox revival this generation. It's due.

Online 4p co-op is a must though. I would consider it neat, but optional, to have video of my buddies on the pad while we save the Lylat system again.

For competitive mp, if I can show up in video form on someones pad to spout cheesy Starwolf lines then I'll be a very happy man.

I don't care if Retro does it, just want it to be a serious attempt at making the franchise relevant again. I do want Retro to make a new 2D Metroid, thought that's what everybody wanted.

I think thats one of the most important aspects that will bring fun to new people. Make it a multiplayer online beast. Co-op story mode and competitive multi in spades (all range mode, lots of ships fighting at the same time, lotsof different ship with diffirent attributes to unlock, lots of different stages, free for all, team games, etc...).
Online highscore for the single player runs would make it really competitive also.
Artistically amazing and graphical powerhouse and you will have people drooling.

People saying an on rails shooter can only be a 5 dollar games are fucking nuts. Ok you dont like the genre, but theres people that love it and having a bombastic and long on rails experience with a giant multiplayer aspect that is unrivaled done by Retro would be amazing.

I'm hoping Metroid hits the 3DS first, personally. Gamecube had 2 Metroids, Wii had 2 Metroids. Time for a break. Plus if it's on 3DS, I'm hoping the odds increase that it ends up being a 2D game :)

Same here. I own a 3DS already so preferably it will be on 3DS (and 2D/sidescrolling would be amazing)

Playing Star Fox 64 3D certainly got me interested in the series again. If anyone can bring new life into that series, Retro is definitely that developer. Retro will definitely probably implement some awesome ideas with the Wii U controller too.

In terms of Retro as a whole, I hope one day Nintendo gives them the funds and creative freedom to create their own IP. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing Retro's carnations of existing Nintendo IPs, but Retro is extremely talented. That being said, I'd love to see what they can do with a new IP.

I think they should take a cue from TF2 and let the characters do the talking for multiplayer, too. Star Fox just isn't really Star Fox without the constant banter. Multiplayer should be the same. And yeah, Star Fox lends itself well to a good online mode. Free for all, Fox vs. Wolf, Capture the Landmaster, and so on. With a decent unlock system and other things totally not ripped off from Call of Duty, it could be pretty nice.

An on-rails shooter doesn't really strike me as a desirable next-generation experience.

So did you play Sin and Punishment 2? That was pretty much one of the ten best games of this hardware generation. I think rail shooters can still be of great quality.
