Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

Yeah - not quite. Nintendo gets extra points deducted for wasting their hardware reveal for the second year in a row. The fact that MS/Sony held their own against a hardware reveal with their poor showings sends Nintendo, by default, to last place.

I look forward to Nintendo's 2013 re-re-unveiling of the Wii U!

This time, they'll for sure have a coherent strategy!

That was the worst fucking conference i've seen in my life. I've been watching E3 for 12 years and nothing even comes close to the piece of shit that was this conference. That's it, I'm done. I'm selling all my Nintendo games and consoles tomorrow. You just lost a fan, and not just any fan, a big one.

seriously? I mean, I agree it was one of the worst ever, but getting rid of their games and console. this is satire right? all those gaming memories. its not like those games are bad all of a sudden. nintendo was great, and they've released plenty of stellar titles. this conference doesn't take away from that.

The 3DS segment is very disappointing to me.Three already known games. Those are Nintendo Direct materials, not an E3 one.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Sadly, I think Peter Main and Howard Lincoln understood hardcore gamers than the current leadership at NOA. :(

Cue casual software, a karaoke game, the bafflingly and poorly presented Nintendo Land, and a bunch of old third party ports.

Your feelings aren't much different from mine, but I want to correct a misconception currently forming: not all the ports are old. Arkham City is (although, it's a new edition in the vein of GOTY), and Mass Effect is. But Darksiders 2, Rayman Legends, and Assassin's Creed 3 will be there right alongside the other versions (or in the case of Rayman, maybe a significant time before.)

So yeah, old ports are lame, but day-and-date ports are encouraging at the very least.

Right, but the thing is even with a dull launch you should back it up with promises and teases of things to come.

Even with the mess the 3DS launch and software follow-up turned out to be, Nintendo still showed off the idea of lots of games and support. Game logos for franchises that aren't on portable platforms. Developers pledging support. Hell, they even had a bunch of characters and scenes from Nintendo franchises and games rendered on the system's hardware to show what it can do (these came to us as the puzzle swap picture things).

A lot of those games got cancelled, or never appeared at all. And some of those developers produced nothing of value. But the idea of support was there. Momentum.

Last year Nintendo showed off a tech demo for Zelda Wii U. No game, just tech, to show visual capabilities. This year they don't even have a sizzle reel showing their franchises in HD. Absolutely nothing to show of their IPs, and the future of Nintendo franchises, except Pikmin 3 (which will be great), and New Super Mario Bros. Wii U. A side scrolling Mario game.

Cue casual software, a karaoke game, the bafflingly and poorly presented Nintendo Land, and a bunch of old third party ports.

For me, someone who games on PC, there's no momentum. No momentum of third party support or games that might interest me, and by that I mean software I haven't seen or played before (Rayman is the only except). And from Nintendo themselves? Just as little. No tease, no promises, no gossip about any of Nintendo's future software. No tech demos. No conceptual footage. Pikmin and Mario.

They basically gave me no reason to rush out and buy a Wii. They gave me reason to wait. That's kinda shitty.

They should have teased future releases, instead of focusing only on launch, I completely agree.

However, boring presentation or not people (not you neccesarily) are overreacting in a hilariously ridiculous way that would only be justified if we for some reason became privy to knowledge that Nintendo's big guns weren't absolutely coming.

I think that they will be showing teases of those games soon, should have done it during the conference, but it was a deliberate choice on their part to only show launch software. I disagree, but in no way does it speak to the awesome stuff that we know for sure is coming.

That also doesn't make Pikmin 3 and NSMBU any less awesome looking for fans of Nintendo games either.

You completely nailed it.

The 3DS unveiling was rather strong. Kid Icarus, Mario Kart, Paper Mario, OoT 3D, SF64, MGS3D, RE:R... it was pretty incredible. Even if none of those were available at launch, it gave us a glimpse of the first couple years of the system's life.

We know there'll be more beloved franchises on Wii U. However, this was a unique opportunity to communicate their vision in HD. To get people excited over the fact that they were finally making the transition.

And instead we focused on games we already knew about.

How hard is it to make a sizzle reel and some screenshots?

The textures in Batman looked worse than the PS3 and 360 versions of the game. How is that "pretty good" for a system that has more ram in 2012?

This is just like last year when people claimed that the games in the WiiU game reel looked worse than the 360 versions of the same game when in fact they were 360 versions, how predictable

Someone HAS to ask Reggie about what Retro Studios is doing right now. It's ridiculous if we have to wait another year to see something.

I mean, I just don't understand how they dropped the ball after the ridicule they received last year for the SAME exact issue regarding the WiiU. At least we got a Zelda demo, but this was truly a horrific conference. Didn't Reggie say they had 23 games to show?

I find Pikmin more interesting than Halo, Splinter Cell, or CoD.

Mario too, but the thing that sent it crashing down for me? Huge focus on NintendoLand, and absolutely nothing from Retro, or a large 3rd party game. They can't even moneyhat Resident Evil.

I understand if your more into yet another 2D mario or Pikmin(That actually looked great) the conference would be better for people but considering that this is a system launch it is automatically the worst of the 3. Sony and Microsoft are clearly getting ready for next gen but even then they gave people that already own their consoles a reason to be excited for something. Halo 4 for Xbox, GOWIIIA, Last of Us for PS3. They just needed stuff to tie you over till the next systems and they did that. Nintendo had a small window to blow everyone away and get a great lead on the next systems but they completely squandered that. I am sure they are going to show great looking Nintendo IPs in HD next E3 but going up against brand new tech + Unreal 4 and the hype that comes with OMGZZZ THE GRAPHXXX! I feel they really messed up.

I think the real reason is that Nintendo has realized that the big E3 press conference is good for showing general journalists and writers the casual stuff that the system offers, as it will reach a very huge audience. they know that gamers are savvy enough to keep up with release news online and in commercials. We dont require a conference to learn about what a system has. Thats really what it comes down to. We know the games will come, as nintendo always seems to deliver at some point. It will just not be at E3 much anymore. I think people need to come to terms with this reality. Even Sony and MS seem to realize this is the future of E3 as an event. The publishers only have games to discuss, so they can focus on a handful of things that make their conference seem much more exciting to the hardcore.
This is why the knee-jerk reactions to all these conferences have to stop. None of these companies revealed everything they have on the table.

Right, because Nintendo's strategy of focusing E3 on the casual audience in 2008 and afterward, and only releasing info about core gamers in the weeks before they release, worked out SO WELL this last generation. If only us plebes could understand that the premier video game event is not actually for fans of video games, it's for casuals who get their info from a CNN Headline News news scroll.

But then wouldn't Iwata have to be fired? I mean, surely he had last say on the overall content of the conference? Or are people from NOA allowed to dictate a lot of what ends up in these conferences? Honestly, I'd be really embarrased right now to be Reggie or Bill.
Believe me when I say that they will look at mainstream media coverage tomorrow and be quite happy with themselves. They really don't give a fuck.

As much as I love Pikmin and Mario I need more than that.

I'm waiting. Maybe a long time. First time I will have done that with a Nintendo home console since the NES. (I didn't get it until I was seven in 1989)

I can't believe they didn't have more than that.
Agreed, very surprising.

This game looks like L4D...

I expected BF3-graphics, not this...
We do have to remember its a work in progress but yeah, it needs a lot of polish. It looks like beginning of this gen :)

So I have to ask, based on this E3, what lesson did Nintendo supposedly learn from the launch of the 3ds?
That core gamers are suckers and wil believe any rhetoric Nintendo spews forth.

I agree. I'll still buy it for Mario and Pikmin and the future but they should have begged every major 3rd party to have a full release schedule the equals 360. Just give me reason to believe it won't be a repeat of Wii for 3rd party support. A clip of metroid, zelda would have done wonders for it. Now, I completely question their support.

Was Madden shown? It hits everything and Ninty's 3rd party support is questionable enough that they should address it.

Apologies, I'm trying not to wade through the thread to avoid spoilers: is there a direct link to the e3 presentation video? e3.nintendo.com isn't working (UStream says "the content is currently not online")

NintendoLand was the big mistake here. I mean wii sports conveyed the wiimote because it required physical movement that everyone instantly understood. The demonstration of nintendoland was stupid and unnecessary. How hard is it to explain that the person using the gamepad can see things the players looking a the screen can't. It doesnt require a 5 minute explanation that was not even well executed and ruined any momentum they had going.

I liked the conference, but appearantly no one else did, so what do I know.
Plenty of games I'm looking forward to, plenty of features I like, and 3DS is getting full attention tomorrow.

Ah well, I guess I'm just easy to please, judging by the complete fallout that is going on here.

I don't recall the Wii getting the big 3rd party multiplats. (btw we know EA is on board from last year (Especially given the support for 2 gamepads at once), they chose to put UBI front and center this time around)

The only thing really lacking were some big first party nintendo games other than NSMB and Pikmin, but would that really be "different" from the Wii? The Wii had those games.

wth were you expecting to differentiate it from the Wii other than HD, and 3rd party support, both of which were actually shown.

Nintendo cut it's own content in half by devoting a show to the 3DS tomorrow, and they decided to only focus on launch software for the conference proper, bad move, surely, but GAF should be smarter than to whine like petulent children framing all of their hopes and dreams moment to moment on a press event.

Nintendo behaved in an incredibly unintelligent manner towards itself, its customers and partners today and FAILED to do a SIMPLE JOB of SELLING their new home console after promising "nothing but games." So please stop with with all these condescending posts and name calling.

The only bombing Project P-100 will do is at the retail market.

Ok, is that the metric fans on here are using to judge games? They should be ecstatic about the conference then! NSMB alone will probably sell more than every new game announced during Sony's conference combined! :rolls eyes.

One more thing, they've completely ignored Wii. It's quite understandable and I didn't expect any other thing, but at least they could have shown the 25th anniversary Kirby game, Fatal Frame 2 remake or a trailer for The Last Story and Pandora's Tower, even if they're already out in Europe. I didn't expected to see them in the conference, but it's strange that there's nothing on the press kits either.

Reggie said on GTTV that their E3 showing, unlike the 3DS reveal at E3 2010, was focused only on launch-window software, which at least explains many of the first-party omissions. That was a pretty big mistake, IMO.

That is what E3 is for, sorry to burst your bubble.

I also am not saying its a strategy game companies should choose to keep the hardcore gamers interested, only that its the new reality.
The real truth is hardcore gamers dont even know what the fuck they even want, so companies are pretty much shooting in the dark like a drunk mercinary trying to figure out what they like.

Did MS focus on the core the last 2 years? No.

Sony spent half their conference last year talking about hardware philosophy and on glorified E-Books this year.

Miyamoto has to understand that they totally lost their Wii sports audience to iOS and other consoles gimmicks.

I don't know if it's the actual Wii U launch line up, but it seems all the western third parties want Nintendo dead so much. I mean, just porting stuffwould make a decent launch but most of the companies chose to ignore. Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Black Ops 2, Hitman Absolution, there are many opportunities for quick cash. If they are thinking "There's no target audience there", then Nintendo should better close their western branches because, you know, they don't have target audience in west. Damn you, stupid western 3rd parties.

Huge mistake. Nintendo needs to sell people on the system now. By next year, it will be too late.

Only explanation I have for the conference is, that they're using the same strategy as some years before.

Have the show for casuals mixed with 3rd party deals - don't steal their thunder by showing one of their own big hitters. I wouldn't be surprised, if they showed one other mayor game this week.
