Halo |OT8| A Salt on the Control Room

Inspired by this thread, I want to ask HaloGAF a question: How many of you consider a Halo game to be your favorite game of this console generation? Or favorite game ever?

Halo is hands down my favorite game series, but I'm not sure if any of them individually are my favorite game ever. And as far as this gen goes, I think Super Mario Galaxy 2 -- beginning to end, pound for pound -- was more fun than any Halo game. It doesn't have the replayability of Halo, but it was nearly flawless while it lasted.

This could get way off topic really easily, but I'm still curious to hear what people think.

Halo 3 was probably my favorite game this generation. (no doubts Halo 4 will be)
Battlefield 3 and Minecraft are up there.
Favorite game ever, Halo 2.

I played and loved Super Mario Galaxy, never got around to playing 2.

Favorite Series:

  • Halo
  • Super Smash Bros.
  • The Legend of Zelda

Favorite Games in Series:

  • Halo 1
  • Smash 64
  • OoT

As far as this generation I'm going with Dead Space 1/2. Those games are the epitome of the genre they represent.

Halo 3 is my favorite xbox game. It would be my favorite game ever but that goes to Super Metroid.

Halo 1: 10; Halo 2: 15; Halo 3: 10(9); Halo 3: ODST: 10(9); Halo: Reach: 11(10)
Yeah, but several Halo 2 missions took place in the same environments, and, in my opinion, should have been counted as one mission.

Kingdom Hearts is my favorite game series, with Halo and GTA as very close seconds. However, each individual game in their respective series aren't my favorite game of all-time.

It's really hard to pinpoint a singular game that is above all others for me personally. I factor in time spent playing, story, replayability, amount of fun, etc. and a few come to mind: Limbo (story, art, game mechanics), Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 (amount of fun and time I spent playing this as a kid), Pokemon Blue (same as THPS4), Team Fortress 2, Minecraft, and Portal 2.

Halo, GTA, and Kingdom Hearts all triumph those individual titles as a series, however when broken down into individual games it just isn't applicable. Although, if I had to chose, Halo 3, GTA: San Andreas, and Kingdom Hearts II are my favorite game in each respective series.

Halo is most definitely my favorite franchise, but in terms of actually picking one game this generation as my favorite or THE game of this generation, that has to go to BioShock 1.

Finally, another Link to the Past master race. Ocarina is a fantastic game, but Link to the Past has always been my favorite, followed by Ocarina, Majora's Mask, and Skyward Sword (although Majora's Mask might be tied with Ocarina).

Hm... Maybe SpOps can compensate for the low numbers... And hopefully the campaign missions are long.
I don't think the slightly lower number is that big of a deal if there aren't any clunkers in there. I'd take 8 good/great missions over 8 good/great missions + 2 Cortana-quality levels that I never want to play again.

Halo is by far my favorite video game franchise.

As far as this gen goes though, game of the generation, by a landslide, goes to Red Dead.

Best MP this gen I found in Halo 3.

Best new franchise of this gen, once again by a landslide, is Assassins Creed.

Halo is by far and away my most cherished video game franchise. Halo CE is my favorite game of all time, by a fair margin as well.

This generation? Bastion and SSBB came the closest in providing the amount of raw fun each Halo game gives me.

I tried RDR right when it first came out, but got annoyed by what I felt like was awkward running / horse riding mechanics. But then the game got so much praise, I regretted not giving it more of a chance. I recently just borrowed it from a friend, so that second chance will be happening soon. I hope I like it, cause I definitely see the appeal.

I was pretty bored of RDR at first.

But then I lasso'd a random woman.

And put her the train tracks expecting some lame invincible NPC shenanigans.

Nope.

Here's a thought:

Merge Super Slayer and Team Objective into a 5v5 playlist called Squad Battle.

Gametypes: (All gametypes include only Sprint and Hologram with DMR starts and TU settings)
Squad Slayer (kill limit 75)
Slayer Pro (no Sticky grenades)
Shotty Snipers (low weighting)
Multiflag CTF
2 Flag Slayer
One Flag CTF
Neutral Assault
3 Plots

Maps:
Battle Canyon
High Noon
Penance
Ridgeline
Solitary
Anchor 9
Countdown
Asylum
Powerhouse
Tempest
Zealot
Affinity
Chateau
Select
Kingdom

I have a better idea.

Halo 2 is my fav. game out of the original trilogy. ME 1 & BioShock 1 changed this Gen for me.

The Big 3:
Metroid
Metal Gear
Halo

If Super Metroid isnt the greatest game Ive ever played, then MGS4 would be pretty damn close, absolutely incredible experience

The Prime series is unbelievable also.
(so glad to see that Retro influence on Halo 4)

Halo is my favorite game by far, but it (feels weird to say this) isnt the greatest game Ive ever played, but it has great sci-fi storytelling, social mp interaction, competitive modes, creative modes and a kick ass fanbase that makes being a halo nerd awesome.

Its not that Halo isnt technically "as good", Halo is just almost a feeling or something, there are so many tertiary things that go with Halo that it shoots to the top of my list, not just gameplay or something.

edit: The Dead Space franchise is worthy of a mention, not necessarily with the likes of my Big 3 by any stretch, but very good, very solid, awesomely fun and scary games for this gen

You know, I did a really good job complaining about the shipping issues earlier but never got around to thanking 343 for such a quick fix!

So David and Jessica (I know you read!) thanks for responding to me directly on Twitter and getting it sorted out so fast!

Halo is my favorite series, comfortably. (Panzer Dragoon is next up.)

But as for games this generation, it was Halo 3 until Skyrim landed. No game has ever pulled me in that hard, for so long, and let me do such a large proportion of what I wanted to do. The game basically scratched nearly all of my gaming itches at once, and in such huge volumes and in such a wonderfully created world set to one of the best soundtracks in anything ever....yeah. No contest on that question.

I wonder how Pinnacle would change (for better or worse) with a three-shot pistol instead of a DMR.

Fyrewulff can correct me though, you can't use the Anniv. pistol on every map, right?

Anniversary Pistol gametype works on every single multiplayer map in Reach

mybrainisfulloffuck.jpg

whaaaaaat? why are there Halo 3-style respawn points/starting points in Reach? Whaaaaaat?

boneyard_q004.jpg

Edit: My screenshot is from this writeup on how you can see beta content in the final version of Reach's boneyard. I think the other guy is posting screenshots of Reach content backported to Halo 3. Or Halo 3 assets buried in the Reach disc.

Kittens question:

Halo is probably my favorite franchise, although I've loved the Assassins Creed franchise this gen as well.

Favorite individual game of this generation would be Bioshock without question though.

Halo is definitely my favorite series.

My favorite game this gen is either Alan Wake or Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I can't really chose between those two.

That means those of us tasked with preparing the relevant Halo 4 builds and assets have approximately one week to put the finishing touches on any videos, a new map, and an already-announced-but-not-yet-played-but-will-be-playable game type that may or may not be making an appearance at this event.

Does anyone know the already-announced-but-not-yet-played-but-will-be-playable game type?

Does anyone know the already-announced-but-not-yet-played-but-will-be-playable game type?

This is what we have to this point off the top of my head:

Announced and playable:
Slayer
Infinity Slayer
Regicide

Announced, but haven't been playable at an event yet:
CTF
Oddball
King of the Hill

I'd based off that list that CTF will be the new playable gametype at PAX. Flag Pistol here we come.

The only two game types I know of that are announced but not yet exhibited are CTF an Oddball. I'm guessing CTF will be featured, as it seems like a better fit for a show floor.

Oh ya that's right. I hope they show us how throwing oddballs and using a pistol with the flag will play out in multiplayer.

The full Awakening track is good. Good.

We only had room for 3 MP achievements...
There is still some place if you update the achievement. (=when you add extra achievements)

Yep. I am expecting CTF, too. At least I hope it is. It's my favorite objective gametype next to Assault.

Via bs angel on Waypoint, regarding there only being eight campaign levels:

bs angel said:
The number of levels in the game (as revealed via Achievement listings) has no particular bearing on the length of the Campaign – and our levels are split thematically and for reasons of fiction as much as they are by location or “map.” There are a couple of instances in the game where a “level” actually comprises different environments and radically different play styles that might otherwise have been split into different levels. In terms of length of Campaign, it’s similar to most other Halo games and the number of hours to complete will depend on difficulty level, number of players and play style, just like before. Some folks will rock as many vehicles as they can and try to blast through as fast as they can, while others will stare at every rock, blade of grass or hidden corner and take weeks to get through a level.

And Halo 4 - in a doubling down of the grand tradition of previous Halo games, encourages exploration, experimentation and replay with all sorts of methods, from hidden story content, to achievements, to easter eggs and beyond.

Over and above that, every copy of Halo 4 includes access to Spartan Ops, with ten weeks of content, and five missions for each of those weeks means that in terms of story-driven gameplay experience, this has far more single player and cooperative content than any other Halo game, period.

Sounds like we're getting Ark-like levels as far as length goes.

After listening to the full version of Awakening emailed from the pre-order a few hours ago, I can safely say that the samples will NEVER do the full tracks or Neil Davidge's work justice. The difference is night and day. I think a lot of people who are sceptical will come around once they hear the full tracks.

The track by itself is amazing, so I can't imagine how it can get any better (it will) once I know the context during the game. Such a great composition.
