I think I'll post my games too just to keep track =)

It's ok for us to post impressions of our movies/books too right?

If I remember I will give this a go. Will need to increase the number of books I read and with my next semester and hopefully getting a job after graduating it may be a challenge.

Didn't do very well last year. Maybe 10-15 books. If I can reach 25, I'd be happy. But I'll make 50 my goal.

And last but not least: Important! Please make a new post each time you update your list, it keeps the updating process way easier for me :)
I'm going to actually do this, if that's the idea. I feel like it will create more incentive for me to read (and forego games and GAF browsing) since posting 3/50 in April would be shameful.

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
Here's all the books I read in 2012, looks like I'll need to double:

Some of the rules in the FAQ will make it a bit easier. You may count a book that has over 500 pages double and if you've already started a book or film, but have finished less than 25% you can count it for this year's challenge.

There's nothing in it about comics unfortunately. Can I count those?

Alright, that makes things somewhat simpler for me. I do have a few books that I've only just started, so I'll count those (since in those cases I'm only 5-15% in to them). I figure that counting those and counting whole volumes of comics (which seems fair to me), I have a pretty good shot at doing this. I don't watch a lot of movies normally, but I think I can find the time to do so for this.

I would have been able to do the 50 books easy a couple of years ago, but now it will be harder.

Alright, I'm down, the books will be a challenge though. There was a time that I would have breezed through this, not so much anymore. I should have a few unread hardcovers lying around that will get me through until Amazon finally starts shipping its Kindle Paperwhite to Canada.

I'll do it. Reading 50 books in a year is nothing. Watching 50 movies... ugh. Like do they have to be new/never seen movies?

Seems like a challenge for bored married people or "forever alone" types. Still though, just trying to read as much as possible for a year would be pretty beneficial to anyone.
It could easily be achieved with just two hours reading a day, plus maybe a bit more on the weekend. I have a full time job, girlfriend, friends, and I still manage to read a book within a week when I do pick one up. Just play less videogames or something.

Benefits of reading: without realising it, you're exercising your imagination, improving your vocabulary and, if you're a creative writer, you're improving your writing ability.

But most importantly, reading is fun. It's its own reward.

I want to repeat my question concerning audiobooks, since I can't find something in the Rules so far. Sure it says not to skim through the books. Which isn't the case with an audiobook because it still takes time to listen to it. So is it OK to include them or not. I'm still in if not, but I just want to know. Might need to change my shopping habbits for 2013 a little bit, depending on the answer.

I'm definitely in for this. Managed around 40 books last year, and probably 25 films.

Am interested in this. Got a Kindle for Christmas, reading is far easier now.

That seems very silly.

And no, I don't think you can count audio books. The reading experience seems like an essential part of this.

Yeah I thought so. And the change of the shopping habbits is not a really bad thing. I'll just get some of the stuff I might have gotten as an audiobook (audible abonement) as a an e-book instead. It's not that big of a change actually. It might actually save me some money.

Let's do this. 50 Movies should be pretty easy. I hover around 40 books every year. I'll try to not read so many 1000-page fantasy behemots.

Audio books are books as far as I'm concerned. I've seen a couple of people in the book threads really like them. As to the rules, this whole thread is a more democratic and honour based system. And not at all consistent, so in the last thread we left it for people to decide. People counted entire seasons of a TV show as a single entry {which is mind-blowing really). I'd only draw a line, if it were a short story. A short story does not a short novel make. But then again a short film, say a feature length documentary that is sixty minutes long, I would count, personally. Each to their own I'd say.

edit: As an example, what is the difference really between someone who consumed WAR and PEACE as an audio book and someone who read the damn thing? In terms of time they are both colossal entities and huge challenges.

edit: In addition, this list is about reading 50 books over the span of a year. And a year is a long time. If you have a book you want to read and haven't read in a long long time [maybe a film version comes out], I'd allow a reread. Books are wonderful things. Also graphic novels, I'd count, depending on length. Hell, if you read aloud to your two year old, over the span of a year, I'd count all of those tiny books [fifty plus in a year], into one book entry. Books are meant to be read, heard, read aloud, illustrated in some cases, read in one sitting, read over the span of many sleepless nights, re-read, read over the course of the year, and read to children as bedtime stories. The only thing that would not count in my opinion is to fool yourself. Reading non-fiction is okay [to count as an entry], but reading newspapers everyday is not. Reading fan-fiction novels online is okay [depending on length], reading a lot of short stories on forums is not [so no, don't count short-stories from neogaf writing challenges [merely note that you have read them, as a point of interest after the list].

Since we're going off of the fiftyfifty.me site there are some rulings from the comments in the rule section. Regarding graphic novels and audio books yes on both counts.

Do comics count? Like the entire run of Sandman for example? Been planning to finally really get into them and this would be a good excuse. Either way sign me up. I need to read "real" books too.

If I could count every ~2 hours of a TV show as a movie, I would fly by the 50 movie count so quickly.

Count a season. :p

Truth be told, it doesn't really work like that. For books, it's kinda okay for you to count a 500 page book as two books [I actually didn't, but you can if you want], but that '2' is the maximum for a single novel. So even it if it is a thousand pages, that would count only as two books.

Even though we're not entirely consistent, I like this rule.

If you watch an episode a week, then I guess, you could count an entire season, at the end, if there is an overaching arc. Somebody watched all episodes of cowboy bebop, and counted that as one piece of film.

Anyone have any idea how they are going to go about doing the movies? I'm going to start by finishing Truffaut's films and finish Akira Kurosawa's stuff. Also, http://www.icheckmovies.com/ is good place to find ideas about what you should watch. Just pick from one of their list.

I'm hoping people in this thread will mention good movies. For someone who has a projector at home I watch awfully few movies. I don't think I've even watched more than 15 movies this year.

I thought I was going to get more (read: any) reading done these last few days...so I've got ~500 pages left of Team of Rivals. I started it in 2012, but I'm counting it (as one book) for 2013. Deal with it.

I have no clue how close I will get to doing this. Movies may be easier since I watch a movie every weekend, but when faced with the choice of reading over writing, I tend to pick writing.

I'm in. But I won't go for 50 books. In order to reach that, I would have to pad it up with lots of easily read fluff, and I don't want that. I know it sounds elitist and douchey, but I try to read mostly Very Good books, and many of them are long and/or complicated and don't lend themselves well to being read through quickly. So I'll go for 25 instead (read 22 in 2012).

When it comes to films, I don't watch them very often, so I'll settle for 10 (5 in 2012).

So far:

Books: 0
- (1.) Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell (just started)

Movies: 0

OK, I promise I'm doing it this year.

Just started Game of Thrones last week. This will be my first entry on the book list.

Alright, I held off on reading one of my Christmas books until today just for this thread. I plan to burn through The Alloy of Law today, its only 260 pages or so. When I finish it I'll update this post.
