Hideki Kamiya annoyed on twitter, tells fanboy to use his own brain

What is wrong with the word foreigner? Why is that word xenophobic?

Foreigner by itself isn't necessarily bad. Saying "Hey, my friend Bill his a foreigner." is completely harmless.

But saying 'you stupid fucking foreigners' while having a history of complaining about 'foreigners' on your Twitter is certainly more venomous and undeniably xenophobic.

Edit: Tempering the 'history of complaining about 'foreigners' part until I flip through his Twilog. I just remember glancing over such tweets in the past, but I may be remembering incorrectly.

Love following him on Twitter, but this far from his first time complaining about 'foreigners'. This sort of xenophobia, racism, or whatever you want to classify it as, scarcely elicits a bat of an eyelash in Japan, which is really disappointing. I'm not greatly offended by it in this case, but the response in general to this sort of thing is problematic. People, as you can easily tell from many of the responses here, just find it cute. It is a serious issue for those 'foreigners' who live in, or even just visit, Japan.
Stop overreacting. His comment was neither xenophobic, racist, or whatever you want to classify it as, because he was not being serious or saying with harmful intent.

Stop making a big deal out of a joke. I'm not dismissing xenophobia as a major issue in Japan, from what I've heard it is. I'm just saying that this particular tweet is nowhere near as malicious as the words "racist" and "xenophobic" would imply.

He said some stupid fucking foreigners, and by all accounts there were some stupid fucking foreigners.

Obviously Kotaku is wrong with their click baiting headlines. Still, I'm pretty disappointed in Kamiya. I'll still buy his games, but really come on dude stop being such a dick.

I can't speak for previously, but the foreigner comment in this situation didn't give me any pause because the entire controversy is around an article using Kamiya as a poster boy to explain the way people in the mystical Eastern land of Japan think about PC gaming to the non-Japanese audience. So the people getting cranky about Kamiya's apathy towards PC gaming and Valve are going to be non-Japanese and so foreigners. More specifically, stupid foreigners believing Kotaku's article is a decent piece on the monolithic view of those wacky Japanese devs on PC Gaming.

It may be less venomous but gaijin (when used in this context) is definitely derogatory towards a specific but essentially arbitrary group (people not from Japan).

It was definitely xenophobic and shitty of him to say.

It was xenophobic in so far it is expected of someone put up the extra patience required when dealing rude American (or whereever) tweeters (is that the noun?) so as to treat everyone with equal respect. At the same time I can't blame him if he decides he won't be answering any english tweets for the next few hours, as he has done in the past. Brings back memories of FFXI: JP Onry.

EDIT: Funny enough, I actually get the feeling Kamiya might be an anglophile. It would explain some aspects of Bayonetta if nothing else.

He said:

"F*ck off, you f*cking stupid idiot foreigner. Satisfied?"

Bolded for sarcasm.
Kamiya was responding to this tweet in full (it was shortened in his response due to character limit):

In context it doesn't appear to be sarcasm at all.

Obviously he doesn't believe all 'foreigners' are idiots, it just happens to only be English speakers that are tweeting him stupid crap all the time.

How many people here actually read that Kotaku article? I think it made some good points about specifically why PC gaming isn't popular in Japan and a lot of it is because publishers don't bother to localize their products for the market. That's definitely not blaming Japan for anything.

Don't we always?

Yeah but we haven't blacklisted it yet.

Going off on people by calling them idiots is great. Going off on people by being racist isn't.

Read the article, doesn't justify the crappy headline.

Good points meaning inaccurate or outdated points backed up with nothing? ok

I just don't know where you're getting him using the term 'stupid fucking foreigner' a half a dozen times, several times directly to a person, as being a joke. What're you basing that on? Him ending it with 'Satisfied?' the one time he used the phrase in English?

Imagine he isn't Japanese for a moment.

This isn't the place to be discussing the article really, so for the sake of argument I will say you're right and it's totally inaccurate.

Even if that's the case it doesn't make it OK for the man to post shit like that.

Marcus Beer is a freelance writer and opinionist. The Producer and co-host of 'Invisible Walls' on Gametrailers.com and NBC LA's resident Gaming expert. He has also handled the PR for several notable game companies in the US and UK before returning to journalism.

compared to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hideki_Kamiya

I mean, I get Marcus Beer is equally as opinionated as Hideki Kamiya, but he aint got shit on the guy. Seriously one actually had his hand in developing very memorable games, while occasionally posting something hilarious on Twitter, and the other is trying to craft an internet personality by being mad on Gametrailers podcasts and did the PR circuit on a handful of forgettable games.

Please. Marcus is a joke.

This really deserves a new thread, pretty embarrassing for all parties involved, Kamiya has always being eccentric but Kotaku is just plain work. Stick to Top 10 panty shits 2013 lists, Plunkett.

This has half-changed my mind. I'm hardly offended, but there is a bit more to it than I was seeing. Still not a big deal.

Indeed, this pretty new thread worthy.

I don't know if you can say he was being racist. Obviously there is a grey area there when he decides he'll be speaking Japanese and vents frustration over English tweets.

I think a politician would get a lot of shit if he said stupid fucking foreigners.

Thank god Kamiya isn't running for office?

We really need someone to program a Kamiya twitter bot. Just mix a combination of "eat shit", "your mom", "ask capcom", some stuff about foreigners, links to old tweets that are links to older tweets, and occasionally a tweet that's only a smiley face.

Can't be that hard...

Yeah, becoming the leader of all Japan coming off being a mere game director is pretty threadworthy!
Oh come on we make threads for every tiny controversy. This one features everyone most favorite developer vs the infamous Kotaku.

Yeah, but if it was a politician would people really think, it isn't racist at all. Today someone likable said it, hence the defense force. Honestly that Fez guy got so much bullshit and you're going to let Kamiya slide?
