MegaRace is the greatest game of all time

efEFu.jpg

You know those punk highway gangs, the ones who really think they rule the road? You just hate them, don’t you? So you say, ‘Somebody ought to do something about them criminal highway gangs!’ And we says, ‘Oh yeah?! Well, why don’t YOU do something, mister big-mouth!’. You don’t have the car? We’ll give you the car! You don’t want to get arrested for taking the law into your own hands? Not a problem! You know why? Because it AIN’T REAL! It’s a whole lot better than real, baby! It’s virtual television: reality’s worst nightmare!

MegaRace was the Crysis of it's time. This shit looked amazing when you were 6.

I, and many others, got this game for free when my family got a new PB computer and boy did I play the crap out of it. I didn't realize until way later that it's not actually a racing game but more of a shooter on rails. Still awesome.

You play as THE ENFORCER who is charged with virtually wiping out a bunch of virtual gangs on virtual tracks in a virtual reality reality show. So you drive in a super fast car with machine guns on it and blow up some dudes for future fat people to watch while they sit on their couch. Yeah it's awesome.

Oh and then there is the star of our show... LANCE BOYLE

This dude is so awesome. He is your fmv host and he explains everything going down in the deep canon of MegaRace. He introduces you to the level, and the gang you'll be blowing up, and even giving out prizes! He is also really 90s. And by 90s I mean cool as shit. Oh and he was the doctor in Heavy Rain.

So you hook up your joystick and you start cruising through corkscrews on some purple planet with factories and avoiding little signs on the track you don't know what they mean and all of a sudden it hits you. This music rocks socks.

Yes.

Yes it does.

It's by the same guy who did the Dune soundtrack, Stéphane Picq, and boy does he know awesome music.

It has everything you could want in a game: Humor, a whole bunch of "different" cars, violence, racing. What else is there?

You just won yourself a prize enforcer! Come and take a look!

So at the end of the day this shit is on gog.com and you should buy it and play it. I don't know who gets the money if you buy it because I'm pretty sure the company went out of business but whatever.

Amazing game. There is a level where you go in a particle accelerator and a whale. Utterly awesome.

Lance boyle is a legend. The prizes were hilarious. One of them

I actually enjoyed the sequel also.

A statement so wild you can't help but love it.

Fuck yes. This game was incredible on my Packard Bell! Love the host.
I, also, played this on a Packard Bell at what had to be age 10 or 11, good times.

He is also really 90s. And by 90s I mean cool as shit.
Fuck yeah! The 90's!

Haha, I admire the conviction of this thread. And I agree, MegaRace was amazing to me as a kid, and it hit right when I was convinced FMV games were the future. I never really played the sequels.

I remember watching the audio visual spectacle of MegaRace with my Dad and Brother. It was definitely the most impressive thing we'd seen from a videogame at the time. I never realized how barely a racing game it was. That's kind of awesome.

OH MY GOD

I remember this game! my aunt had mega crace 1 of all things with ski free on her computer. I could never figure out how to accelerate in that game in any time i played until the last time i remember which i did and i just kept playing it more and more, with the creepy FMVs happening after each one in the weird futuristic vibe. Man that takes me back. Maybe I'll grab it off GOG one of these days

I just nostalgia'd all up in this bitch.

All that's missing is that 3D Dinosaur game.

AHH!! The one with the dinosaur running at the screen, and then you're fighitng bugs in this weird/creepy amusement park thing? I'm nostalgia'd out

There was a racing game, much newer than MegaRace, can't remember the name.
Really game, don't think it got a lot of love. Damn, I remember great graphics for the time (10 years or so ago), lots of desert maps, had to drift around corners to win.

Oh man, I hate getting old.

Gen X

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
At first I thought I might've played MegaRace on the 3DO but the more I think about it the more I realise I might have the name mixed up with another futuristic racer.

Another big nostalgia trip is this fucking game

Sensory Overload, some doom clone that FREAKED me the fuck out when i was 6 or 7 when i played it. I barely got passed like the first 20-30 min of the game cause i always got so freaked out when the guys popped up.

There was another game too that was REALLY good. It was line graphics in 3d that involved flying a ship in an arena type thing blowing up opponents. in arenas. came out around the same time

Oh, since I guess we're doing this, who all remembers Dinosaur Safari?

I played this for hours

edit: apparently this was the result of a bad breakup between apogee dudes and the people who made Skunny Kart. god all these memories.

now that I think of it, a lot of my games were on those 100 FREE DEMOS cds that came with PC GAMER and the like, and I had to mail actual money to people to get games. jesus. now going into another room to get my credit card is too much work.
