Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

If they are really THIS close to unveiling the console then I guess we just gotta pray and hope Sony comes up with something that improves upon the Dualshock, increase the size, fix the triggers and make the analog sticks a bit stiffer.

As someone stated before, "4" is a bad omen in japan. I don't want it to be called Playstation 4; I love me some codenames!

"The Japanese don't like the number 4 and 9 because of their pronunciation. Four is pronounced "shi" which is the same pronunciation as death. Nine is pronounced "ku" which has the same pronunciation as agony or torture."

And why are there Japanese games like Persona 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, Monster Hunter 4, Resident Evil 4 and many more? I guess they would just use the English pronunciation?

1) uses mini usb, I'd like to switch to micro
2) doesn't charge from a standard wall socket, only a PS3 or PC. don't know why
My household contains about 10 mini-USB cables and zero micro-USB cables.

And I could swear I can charge it from a wall outlet. Maybe you're using some weird USB transformer?

Please don't add those ugly and annoying things on top of the analog sticks like the 360 has. Keep it smooth with no tabs. I can't play the 360 without being agitated. Such a fucking stupid idea.

Make the handles like the Wii Classic Controller Pro aka the most comfortabls controller.

Do you mean the sunken design of the analog sticks with the dots? I love it, It's one of the reasons I like X controller much better than the DualShock. The concaved stick helps your thumb to sink in the stick, it provides good grip.

Everyone I know who has played with both the 360 and the PS3 controller extensively, prefer the 360 controller over the PS3 controller. The Dual Shock is outdated.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers have exactly the same features (the PS3 controller also has that Sixaxis thing), so none of them outdate eachother. Which control people prefer the most is as subjective as it gets, not a right or wrong answer to it :) Some people prefer the PS3 controller while other prefer the Xbox 360 controller.

Oh boy I'm ready.

I mean I like the dualshock, but honestly I love when a new console = new controllers.

I missed that about the PlayStation transitions.

It represents new gameplay options.

Good. The DualShock is one of the least ergonomic controller designs in this current age. The best way to grip it is to not put any fingers on the trigger buttons. You know, how nobody holds it. Substantial gaps are left in the back of the controller when holding it like normal (unless you have giant hands), making support of the controller more difficult/unpleasant. My hands cramp if I play a really tense game that causes me to grip the controller firmly and frequently. 360 controller does not. And it's not because the analog sticks are laid out differently.

I personally wish we got the boomerang. Looked very comfortable. I don't give two shits about how it 'looks' if it's functional and comfortable to hold.

I've been saying that a Vita like controller would be awesome. Hell, if Sony is cutting production costs of the Vita and with the handheld having been a failure, why not use it for the Oribis? I say launch the Oribis with a redesigned Vita as its controller. Since this is the year where they will cut production costs on it, if they packaged the cheaper redesigned Vita with each single Oribis allowing it to be multi function with the Oribis games but then you can also play Vita games on it they have hit 2 markets right there. You have a handheld and a console controller. Since it all works with bluetooth allowing people to also use their DS3's would go a long way. Everyone now will also have access to Sony's handheld that have bought the Oribis, so selling software and memory is where they will make their money.

This idea is way out there, but it can work and would really trump Nintendo's poor attempt with the gamepad.

1) Mini USB was the most common thing in 2006, so it's understandable it has mini instead of micro.

2) I plug my DS3 into my phone chargers all the time and they charge just fine.

I think it goes "Biohazard 4" when you press the start button, so yes.

It's different though. People thought getting rid of the Game Boy name was also considered handheld suicide for Nintendo, and look now, their handhelds have never been more popular.

Microsoft keeps need to keep Xbox because that's all gamers perceive. They don't say I've got a Microsoft Xbox. Same goes for Sony and Playstation. During the PSX years, you always said I got a Sony playstation, now after the playstation 2, you just abbreviate or say the name at most (ps3, playstation 3).

Maybe Sony could pull it off. Most gamers would know it's a PS4 if it's only called Orbis. And clever marketing and commercials could get the general public to know as well.

What's with everyone wanting it to be bigger? What kind of monstrously huge-handed monsters are you guys?

The DS3 fits my hand like a snug glove.

Not a fun of touch screen and whatnot, but I'll welcome an improved Dualshock (better analog/triggers, that's pretty much all)

Keep it simple, Sony.

In a gameplay perspective and general OS speculation. What would having a biometric sensor do with regards to the ps4?

Make the price more expensive so they can justify a $800 console.

You must have small hands, the controller feels like it's designed for a ten year old.

HR and body temperature.

A simple pulse oximeter is very cheap

edit: oxygen saturation too

So in 4 weeks top we are going to see PS4? Not buying it. To show it in February makes no sense to me.

If true it just means PS4 is crap and they are scared of MS.

I love the Dualshock, so here is to hoping that it is just an evolution of that, rather than a radical change. Guess we shall see.

This is so weird to me.

Anyway, if Sony and Microsoft decide to redesign their controller, I sure hope they simply drop their old controllers. One of the worst things about Wii and WiiU is the constant switching between controllers and peripherals.

One game is a little different from an entire system.

Just give it concave analogs and triggers and a headset jack and its good to go.

Never understood this. As soon as you press on the sticks, the fleshy part of your thumb becomes convex to fit the shape of the stick. Why does it matter whether it's convex or concave?

I've never had a thumb slip off an analogue stick, so...

Has a touch screen and sensors??? How original!!

WiiU gamepad anyone....
*looks at all the various controllers that have ever been*

Really, you think companies haven't been copying everyone else's controller ideas since forever?

Really I do not care much for an additional screen on the controller but since Nintendo went their it's probably best everyone else follows suit so third party developers can really focus in on what they're working on. I mean, can you imagine if not all controllers had two analogs, a d-pad, 4 face buttons, and 4 back buttons? It would be a pain to design around such inconsistency.

Finally!

Things I hate about DS3:

- plastic feels very cheap
- L2/R2 are horrible
- too small, not everybody has small hands

Just don't make analogs asymmetrical, fix the above things and we'll get along just fine.

Poor @supjoey is getting a talking to this morning on what should and shouldn't be mentioned on twitter

Anyway I really like the motion aiming stuff on the Vita. It sounded like something I wouldn't like but after playing Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush I hope its in the PS4 controller as option. Using the tilt to fine tune my shots is great

There should be more tampons in gaming
Hmmm, I think a controller that is crescent shaped (similar to the "boomerang") will fit the natural curves of the hand better, toss in further spaced analog triggers with concave depressions to rest the thumbs, actual triggers for R2/L2 and R1/L1 has resting depressions for your fingers as well and I think that's essentially the perfect controller. It must still have the traditional Sony Dual Shock D-Pad and the associated cross, square, circle and triangle buttons to truly be great. I guess what I'm describing is an amalgam of the DS, the 360 controller and the initial Boomerang.

I love the DS as is. It could use some improved triggers. But that's all I'd change.
If this is indeed true. I wouldn't mind something similar to the Wii U gamepad.

I think the controller that people prefer is the one that they've used the most. Sony hasn't changed the Dual Shock because they've been so successfull with the PSone and PS2, so they think "why change a winning formula". The dual shock isn't what made those systems successfull though. Hopefully they've realized now that the contoller is very much outdated, which I think they have.

Yon can usually be used instead of Shi for the number 4, so I'm not sure how big the issue is. My understanding is a little limited though and Japanese numbers and counting are a bit more complex than in English.
Yeah, that is true. They do indeed have different counting systems depending on which things that are being counted.

So I guess we should say a expensive screen/sensors in this controller is going to make the PS4 hardware weak, like people always say packing in Kinect 2 will do to next box?

Anybody? Anybody?

I'm pretty sure a small touchscreen in a controller might be cool though.

God I hope this is true.

Although I spent years with this design (PS1/2) it always feels awful now compared to my 360 controller.
