Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

This sounds familiar to me:

– Sony is near the middle end part of their Project Orbis, their next generation PS4. It will not be called Playstation 4, teams have started to call the final name as Omni. Omni will reflect their new hardware and content delivery philosophy. Omni will be “very capable” of doing modern day graphics compared to a Direct X 11 level of technology like Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite 2. Compared to Wii U, it is better, but not the biggest leap in the world according to developer friends of mine. The key is the Omniviewer, a thin, lite and slick head mounted autosteroptic display that can track the users head and presents a 360 image view with semi transparent AMOLED screens. This can turn any TV into a 3D TV, as well as add extra augmented reality information outside of the TV screen. One application from an entertainment perspective seeing movies in 2k, 4k or IMAX resolutions as their original size where you have to move your head to look at the full picture being displayed. Can also synch with the Vita. The new controllers whether it’s the Dual-Moves or the Classic DualShock will have pulse sensors in the grips for biofeedback gameplay. Plans are a Basic Unit with 160 gigs and just the system with controller at $350-$399 and one with the Omniviewer and a pack-in game for $450-$499. Aims are for a September 2013 launch.

Those people must have been the biggest fans of this:

More like the PS3 controller is too small, 360 is perfectly sized IMO.

In a gameplay perspective and general OS speculation. What would having a biometric sensor do with regards to the ps4?

Some things mentioned in the Sony patent... in summary, they can be used to more accurately determine or even predict the relationship between your fingers and the controller.

A given user of a computer program may exhibit various activity levels in the nervous system during interaction with the computer program. These activity levels provide valuable information regarding a user's intent when interacting with the computer program. Such information may help supplement the functionality of those interfaces described above.

By way of example, and not by way of limitation, the nerve activity level of a user's fingers may be used to determine the position/acceleration of a user's finger with respect to the video game controller. This relationship may correspond to the user's intent when interacting with the electronic device (e.g., intent to push a button on the game controller).

By way of example, and not by limitation, the control input may direct the computer program to perform an action in response to the pushing of a button based the proximity of the user's finger to the game controller and the acceleration with which the user's finger is moving towards the game controller. At some acceleration and proximity, the user cannot avoid pushing the button.

In many computer program applications, the number of possible actions that are likely to be executed can be quite large. A reduced set of possible actions can be determined by a computer program based on the measured nerve activity, eye gaze direction, and the location of fingers, etc. Then, with additional evidence from the computer software/application, content etc., a final decision can be made regarding which possible action to execute. This might both improve estimated input accuracy and make the system faster.

In some embodiments, pre-touch/pre-press activity could be detected by nerve signal analysis and used to reduce latency for real-time network applications, such as online games. For example, if a particular combination of nerve signals can be reliably correlated to a specific user activity, such as pressing a specific button on a controller, it may be possible to detect that a user is about to perform the specific activity, e.g., press the specific button.

Nerve sensors 213 may be placed around the game controller 200 in order to measure nerve activity levels for certain body parts of a user as he is operating a computer program running on the electronic device. In FIG. 2, two nerve sensors 213 are located on the joysticks 205, and two nerve sensors are located on the handles 213. The nerve sensors 213 on the joysticks 205 may be used to measure the nerve activity level of the user's thumbs as he is operating the controller 200. The nerve sensors 213 on the handles 207 may be used to measure the nerve activity level of the user's palms as he is operating the controller

By way of example, and not by way of limitation, the nerve sensors 213 on the joysticks 205 may be used to determine the user's thumb position in relation to the joystick 205, the acceleration of the user's thumb as it moves toward the joystick 205, and whether the user's thumb is in direct physical contact with the joystick 205. Similarly, the nerve sensors 213 on the handles 207 may be used to determine the force with which the user's palms are gripping the controller

It also talks more in passing about potential applications in concert with eye gaze tracking, touch panels or touchscreens, and cameras for tracking fingers.

They have started shipping PS4's and when they hit the shelves they'll see who notices.
Everyone will buy one just to see what it is, Sony are back in business.

So they are taking the WiiU approach?

I'm glad they are apparently keeping DS3 compatabilty.

No. It's not. Xbox 360 controller is better apart from the D-Pad.

Crap face buttons too.

The bumpers are inferior to the L1/R1 shoulder buttons but the triggers on the 360 pad are superior to the abomination on the DS3's, however I'd prefer digital shoulder buttons because fuck racing games.

I like Dualshock but I have no problem in redesign as long as it is good. Option to use Dualshock in any game of course negates any concern so I hope they do that.

Fuck.

I know MS's new one is going to be a disgusting touch, waggle, ad ridden monster. I was really hoping Sony was going to stay with a conventional controller.

We have zero information that Sony is going down Microsoft's path.

If Destination Playstation is for retailers, you would think that they are going to be briefed on a huge product launch this year? And since it's very unlikely that Sony would announce there and leaks would be immense, you would think that they actually announce the PS4 prior to that.

It's about 6 weeks until Destination Playstation, it really wouldn't surprise me to see the reveal in about 3-4 weeks.

I think the controller that people prefer is the one that they've used the most. Sony hasn't changed the Dual Shock because they've been so successfull with the PSone and PS2, so they think "why change a winning formula". The dual shock isn't what made those systems successfull though. Hopefully they've realized now that the contoller is very much outdated, which I think they have.

I've used the PS controller far, far more than I ever have the 360 controller and have done so since the PS1 came out.

I still think the Xbox controller is a better design. The SNES roots of the PS3 controller really show through; it is GREAT for 2D games (hence why I always use it for emulators) but it is subpar for 3D games.

And I can't believe they've still not updated the ergonomics for the thing. It's a SNES controller with handle grips. Which was a big improvement back in the day but things have moved on since then... and since the basic shape wasn't built with sticks in mind their positioning just makes it feel much more awkward than any other recent controller.
The back of the thing is practically flat.

Good riddance. Playing for extended periods on a dual shock feels uncomfortable and cramped on my hands. I also hope they won't stick in rear touch panels on the new one.

They're going to fuck it up royally and you'll all be begging to get the DualShock design back.

I can stand by this statement. It is Sony after all.

Please don't fuck it up. Just copy the shape of the 360 controller and triggers but leave the superior d-pad, joysticks, buttons, L1/R1.

Makes sense to me. They're not going to unveil PS4 at something that isn't even a press event.

this is nuts. So it could know you're going to press a button before you actually press it

could remove input lag entirely through the magic of 'sensors'

I don't want anything like the Vita as a console controller. The vita has horrendous shoulder buttons and pretty bad sticks. The sticks work for a handheld but for console gaming it would be a nightmare.
THIS

Aiming with those sticks is HORRIBLE in Uncharted GA (just like the game heyooooh) because they're so tiny and imprecise.

Make it bigger. The dual shock feels like a little toy in my American fat sausage fingers.

Fixed.

I personally found both the xbox 1 controller and the dual shock comfortable to hold.

As long as they improve the triggers, make the analog sticks concave , add more buttons (SERIOUSLY, holy shit do controllers need more buttons so bad it's not even funny) they can keep the shape for me.
I hate offset analog triggers.

The article mentions using the vita controls , which means they are trying to get the back touch pad to work with a controller in some form.
If they somehow make it work that's fine by me too.

Don't get why there was so much hate for the boomerang when people have never actually tried the physical product, if it was comfortable and a good controller to play with then why do you care how it looks like, I actually prefered it to the DS3 because of didn't look like another generic PC controller.

Dont think they're going the in screen route or whatever, just think it will be more similar to the 360 controller, I prefer the ps3 controller but 360 is fine also, brother hates the 360 controller but all he's had was a sony console his whole life.

I for one welcome this news assuming it's not bullshit. The Duelshock is long past it's prime. I would love to see something new that is more comfortable. However it must keep that Dpad. I love the Duelshocks Dpad. That's about the only thing I love about the Duelshock.

There are things that could use improvement, but there are also many things where Sony already has the best in the business and I hope they use it. Like:
- Face buttons
- Vita D-pad
- Stick layout & shape :p

I'd be in the dick
I don't see the controller changing drastically but I do want the system to be announced and to see the designs.

I love the DualShock. Way better than the 360 controller, IMO. Better D-Pad, better size, generally better everything except the triggers.

The back of the thing is practically flat.
The only thing that is touching the flat part on the back is my long fingers, and they just rest there. Maybe it variates a bit on how the size of the hands people have though. So many different size hands, so it is hard to make one controller that fits all with no problems.

The rumor states that you're going to be able to use your PS3 controller if you want to because of Bluetooth. So Sony should shoot for the moon here. People are going to bitch no matter what they show and even they know that.

yup, lol. As long as my DS3 still works, we're good.... If not, I'll use my VITA, lol.

I wouldn't be too surprised if the functionality was similar to that of the Vita, and you could substitute a Vita itself in its place. And DS3 controllers for games that don't need the new input methods. There's not really a reason for them to not use Bluetooth again so they should work fine.

Touchscreen controllers shouldn't even be a consideration. They should be heading towards the direction of VR gaming.

Give me a traditional controller. That's all I want and need. Not something with motion control or touchscreen capabilities. I don't care for that shite.

But why would retailers need to know about the PS4 when it won't come out until the end of the year? I mean they're just retailers right. I would Imagine that the retailers would just be like "K Sony, we'll keep that in mind."
