This likely has nothing to do with the hardware side, which is a side nobody so far loves Valve for as it's been nonexistent so it is no big loss if their plans for that changed (though if they've been scrapped I guess they've lost whatever they had invested).Chief engineer is fired, reportedly 25 or more employees laid off, Director of Business leaves company, more good news at 11!
Why is it OK to constantly post messages like 'fuck Origins' or "UPlay should die in fire" etc but the moment someone dislikes Steam the defense force brigade is onto him?
What are the chances we'll get any sort of comments from Valve regarding these stories?
The sooner the better.
My understanding was the Greenlight is taking a long time, isn't as automated as they hoped. I can't imagine it fully replacing actual humans any time soon.Director of Business is a job for people forming external partnerships.
Let's imagine two things:
1) With Greenlight taking over for conventional submissions, and Valve looking to exit the curation game altogether, they have less and less need for such a position as it relates to Steam. Insofar as this position would have directed something like Greenlight, it has failed.
2) Assume that there's trouble in the hardware front; so either they've having trouble with external partners or they're scrapping their hardware plans altogether.
Wouldn't these be a fairly logical underpinning for Valve to change or eliminate this position or rethink their direction?
From a company about to launch a bunch of hardware to a company that's not.
Concept17 said:This kind of speculation makes zero sense. ~25 people of over 400 is not a huge deal. Still don't know why this guy left. He may have just not been needed anymore.
I think people might be trying a bit too hard to sensationalize this. Lets at least wait to hear from Valve before we start giving News Ltd. tipoffs for their next blazing headline.
What if all of them were wasting money, working on unsuccessful projects or bad at their job due to not fitting in with the Valve culture? Would it still be a bad thing?
lol/10

Seriously guys, Microsoft is on the verge of countering Sony's Feb. 20th conference with, Durango/Steam/Valve merger.
(evil laugh)

Can someone in a non sarcastic way tell me whats really happening to valve this last few days? And what is it related to? It seems to me they were/are doing just fine with steam etc?
That would make me think wtf Valve is doing so incompetently to where so much money is being wasted. I also can't imagine why these 2 figureheads would be fired/resigned after working with the company for so long if they didn't "fit in" anymore.

Maybe in the other thread that would have made sense but this dismissal kind of changes the conversation. 25 out of 400 isn't a relevant argument either. Established people who worked there for years and made the company money are being pushed out all at once. Something has to be up. Not just a culture clash purging.
We're being sarcastic because we don't actually know. Can someone in a non sarcastic way tell me whats really happening to valve this last few days? And what is it related to? It seems to me they were/are doing just fine with steam etc?
Valve doesn't make this type of move very often.
It's sensational on this alone.
sell your couriers it's all over.
seriously though, I think that valve itself actually changed some time ago, and it's just now that we are seeing some people inside the company realize this change. I personally am more than satisified in their continued evolution towards a services and platform provider first and game developer second, but I can see how some people wouldn't be happy with that.
Can someone link me to a recent financial statement / shareholder's report showing Valve's record profits of late? I like seeing numbers instead of trusting hearsay when it comes to how well they're doing financially. It gives me peace of mind.
Thanks

Maybe Gabe woke up and realized that his Steambox/Linux utopia ain't happenin.
They amount of downplay Steambox received after that miniPC reveal they did a few weeks back was already pretty surprising.
Well his company was just making some weird and unnecessary decisions lately (Greenlight,Steambox) If this is Gaben stopping that before it affect and change the company then it's actually good move.
Do we really need this kind of thing?

Today has made it very clear that no one here has a clue what Valve is up to.
Hopefully we get some more info on all of this soon.
