Valve's Director of Business has left [GAF Rumor: TF2 Art Lead, SFM Head Gone, More]

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Chief engineer is fired, reportedly 25 or more employees laid off, Director of Business leaves company, more good news at 11!
This likely has nothing to do with the hardware side, which is a side nobody so far loves Valve for as it's been nonexistent so it is no big loss if their plans for that changed (though if they've been scrapped I guess they've lost whatever they had invested).

Why is it OK to constantly post messages like 'fuck Origins' or "UPlay should die in fire" etc but the moment someone dislikes Steam the defense force brigade is onto him?

Who ever said it's okay to post "fuck Origins"? People can post constructive and reasoned criticism of whatever company or service they want, whether it's Origin or Valve or whatever. Your post, however, was neither constructive nor reasoned.

Maybe Gabe woke up and realized that his Steambox/Linux utopia ain't happenin.

They amount of downplay Steambox received after that miniPC reveal they did a few weeks back was already pretty surprising.

I think people might be trying a bit too hard to sensationalize this. Lets at least wait to hear from Valve before we start giving News Ltd. tipoffs for their next blazing headline.

Director of Business is a job for people forming external partnerships.

Let's imagine two things:
1) With Greenlight taking over for conventional submissions, and Valve looking to exit the curation game altogether, they have less and less need for such a position as it relates to Steam. Insofar as this position would have directed something like Greenlight, it has failed.

2) Assume that there's trouble in the hardware front; so either they've having trouble with external partners or they're scrapping their hardware plans altogether.

Wouldn't these be a fairly logical underpinning for Valve to change or eliminate this position or rethink their direction?
My understanding was the Greenlight is taking a long time, isn't as automated as they hoped. I can't imagine it fully replacing actual humans any time soon.

This kind of speculation makes zero sense. ~25 people of over 400 is not a huge deal. Still don't know why this guy left. He may have just not been needed anymore.

No, 6% of the workforce is actually quite a bit. If they are centered in one or two divisions, it means that the company is changing course.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!

Probably, but considering how little we tend to hear about this kind of stuff at Valve, a whole heck of a lot is happening at once.

What if all of them were wasting money, working on unsuccessful projects or bad at their job due to not fitting in with the Valve culture? Would it still be a bad thing?

That would make me think wtf Valve is doing so incompetently to where so much money is being wasted. I also can't imagine why these 2 figureheads would be fired/resigned after working with the company for so long if they didn't "fit in" anymore.

"Other people get to troll stuff so I'm going to do it too!" is not a good reason, IMO. I don't set policy here and I rarely post in Origin or UPlay threads. But, without fail, I see you pull your stunt in virtually every Valve thread. To top it all off you seem like a fairly decent poster otherwise.

Won't know the impact of these personal changes for a while.

I remember when Blizzard old timers left before WoW debuted and everyone was predicting that this would cause the company huge problems.

Can someone in a non sarcastic way tell me whats really happening to valve this last few days? And what is it related to? It seems to me they were/are doing just fine with steam etc?

sell your couriers it's all over.

seriously though, I think that valve itself actually changed some time ago, and it's just now that we are seeing some people inside the company realize this change. I personally am more than satisified in their continued evolution towards a services and platform provider first and game developer second, but I can see how some people wouldn't be happy with that.

Jeri wasn't even a figurehead at Valve.

Maybe in the other thread that would have made sense but this dismissal kind of changes the conversation. 25 out of 400 isn't a relevant argument either. Established people who worked there for years and made the company money are being pushed out all at once. Something has to be up. Not just a culture clash purging.

Again, not necessarily a bad thing. It's confirmed to be a restructuring of priorities of some sort. Usually shakeups like this are exactly what a company needed, which is why they happen in the first place. They're almost always positives.

Can someone link me to a recent financial statement / shareholder's report showing Valve's record profits of late? I like seeing numbers instead of trusting hearsay when it comes to how well they're doing financially. It gives me peace of mind.

Thanks!

Wouldn't a hardware team, an android team, and a director of business (relations with third parties) actually all fit tremendously well with a service and platform provider though?

they don't have shareholders, all their reports are private

The truth is that nobody knows.

The indication and speculation is that Valve is reversing course on their hardware initiative, so we may never see the fabled "Steambox".

Supposedly Valve has exactly one shareholder: Gabe Newell.

Shareholders?
Financial statement?

Valve is private.

Shareholder's report? The company isn't public.

Edit: Beaten so violently.

Well his company was just making some weird and unnecessary decisions lately (Greenlight,Steambox) If this is Gaben stopping that before it affect and change the company then it's actually good move.

I don't understand what direction they're moving....

Are they going balls deep trying to become the digital vendor for all sorts of software other than games? Moving away from games?

Today has made it very clear that no one here has a clue what Valve is up to.

Hopefully we get some more info on all of this soon.

Except Newell was talking up Steambox not that long ago - last month. It's not like some out-of-control underlings were running around off-script. So maybe they've thought things over and decided to change course.

If I had to speculate, I'd say the lukewarm CES reception might have made them rethink plans.

Unless Gabe was behind the Steambox & Greenlight decisions and they didn't play out like he was expecting so he killed them quickly.

Uh this is the company that publicly stated they hire talent and then let them decide on their own what they want to go work on. They hire talent and not for a particular position. That's weird. A sizable portion of their staff would be labelled "researcher" anywhere else. Free money! They also have said they have no managers or anything like that.

As they don't have shareholders or a stock price to placate, it's unlikely that they'll say anything until it's ready for the public. There's no reason for them to talk about any initiatives until they're ready for consumers.

Unless you means leaks?

Maybe Valve will work together with Apple to conquer the core gaming market with Apple TV. Steam on Apple TV and this guy not agreeing with it. Who knows.
