The orbiting satellite Orbis is now powering up its megaton beams for the 20th. Best Microsoft can do is watch no amount of PR speech can stop it.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
I really wonder how much that Elijah Wood MTV reveal of the 360 in 2004 helped MS... I really can't see the "mainstream" public caring then about it.

Ah, I see. Well I should explain then that I was being sarcastic in order to make fun of the notion of one company giving 'friendly warnings' to a competitor. I'm not targeting Microsoft but the general practice, which is used by quite a few companies. I'm not examining the actual validity of Harrison's or Grimes' point, they may very well be right.

Understood.

As for the rest of this thread, bajesus. I hope those Kaz avatars are going to be honored.

While I agree that few people are actually going to view te live stream, it's going to be in the mainstream media afterwards.

Dear God! Damage Control 101. I am sure Sony doesn't care what Microsoft thinks at this point but I am sure they appreciate the extra attention.

Honestly, Microsoft seems like they were caught off guard by this announcement, and in my opinion, are trying to defend the fact that they haven't announced anything yet or are not ready yet.

5 pages before the Wii U got brought into this. I'm impressed.

I actually referenced the Wii-U on the first page and for good reason.

People will know exactly what the PS4 is and that it's different than the PS3, Sony would have to fuck up really hard for that point not to get accross. So this revealing will raise awareness no matter what.

Ive already seen articles on the announcement in national newspapers in the UK. So it wont just be the gaming community aware of it.

lol.. people are going too much into a ripoff article. He's just doing PR sales speak. People should know that the original article is about the X360 catching up the Wii and turning into the market leader in UK.

There will be a lot of attention on PlayStation next week. Is there anything Microsoft needs to do to ensure it has share of voice?

Eagle: All we know that there is an event planned on February 20th. So we can only wait and see what is announced. We are very happy with our offering at the moment. Our software market share in value was 55 per cent. So we are pretty happy.

Grimes: The reason why I love this industry is because there’s always new things happening. But we are also fantastic at creating stories that may or may not happen. The key thing for my team is to focus on who is buying today. Whatever gets announced on February 20th, the majority of consumers in the UK won’t know. They’ll still want to buy the devices out there. So in terms of noise our job will be to ensure that the consumers that are going into stores, going online, still see and experience Xbox, rather than get lost in the industry chatter. Whatever is announced is important from an industry perspective, but we must remember who is buying right now.

He was being interviewed and that was his PR response. I don't think anyone was deliberately giving advice.

Please stop bringing rationality to this thread.

People comparing this to the Sony ridiculousness of "next generation starts when we say it does" are frankly reading way too much into what I interpret as a bland statement.

And Microsoft in panic mode? Seriously? This is the company that in Britain is the leading console by a healthy margin. Panic mode would be putting together a rushed conference in the next couple of weeks. If they stick to their schedule, it is anything but panic mode.

Microsoft will introduce the “LiveWall”, a omni-projection unit that will allow game environments to be projected nearly 360 degrees around the user. Using Kinect 2, they have two demos of one that is a battlefield RTS and one that is a kung fu game with guys attacking all around. The LiveWall can also project different images on the wall, so people can play different games on different walls. Microsoft is prepared to champion this unit as a cheaper and more effective alternative to wearing a “goofy stupid VR headset” to combat Sony’s Omniviewer while Sony is going to point out the low resolution quality and the lack of privacy.

It begins...

Whatever your direct competitor publicly recommends you do, run away and do the exact opposite as soon as you possibly can.

Well there you go. Anyone that interpreted that as "jealous" or "condescending" has over reacted.... meanwhile the entire thread is filled with condescending comments :)

Sony taking it calm and cool so far.

MS kinda in panic mode?

It's like the roles have switched compared to 2006.

The press is eager to get the competition to comment on the event, it's not like Microsoft exec's are lining up to denigrate Sony. Microsoft will hold their event, it's not like they are suddenly changing the release date to 2013.

*Standing in my room doing a 360*

uhhh, just no.

A lot of people in this thread are blatant about the fact they did not read the article and source.

It's pretty obvious that's the case- the console wars bring out hyperbole and the cheerleader mentality from far too many people.

Like I said earlier, the fact that people are comparing this to easily the most arrogant statement in console history (Next generation doesn't start until we say it does) is laughable. The comments in this thread really show that there is a vocal majority who will crap on anything that comes from Microsoft at this point (and glorify anything from Sony at this point).

Well said. It seems like the PR reps will have to watch their tongues in the coming months. This hasn't been the first time that a site has warped an article/interview to generate more clicks, and it certainly won't be the last.

"The majority of consumers won’t know what the reveal is about, claiming that it won’t attract much appeal from the mass demographic."

Seeing how Sony is marketing the reveal on various websites and YouTube, I believe he is mostly wrong.

shorter version:

Microsoft telling Sony that they can announce whatever they want, won't matter because their marketing sucks. Microsoft being right.

Whenever *ANYTHING* big in electronics is launched, barring some sort of disaster on a 9/11 scale, it's the most read and most shared thing on the BBC news website the following day. The guy's talking out of his arse.

Yeah, my bad (can't access vg247 so I only saw the ripped off article), the original article is more accurate of the situation, the news in the OP sounds a bit sensationlist.

So just your typical day on the gaming side.
