Tomb Raider Review Thread!

Weird, since Uncharted seems to be inspired by original Tomb Raider

I'm still baffled by comments like this.

Uncharted = focus on third-person shooting with light platforming/puzzle-solving
Tomb Raider = focus on platforming/puzzle-solving with light third-person shooting

That's the way it used to be.

Now this new Tomb Raider totally moves the series' focus towards action/shooting, much closer to Uncharted's.

That GT review is so odd, it's tinged with negativity throughout, especially focusing on the juxtaposition between Lara's actions in the story and her actions in the gameplay but they still give it a really good score.

Integrity.

Really it goes to show whether or not anyone is listening or just focused on a number.

I greatly prefer naming and shaming, yeah. Isn't it more entertaining to see name members eat crow, rather than non specific 'people'?

That's fine. It's just that some people take it as a form of generalization for the entire forum when it's unlikely that the original poster intended it as such.

Well, I have exactly $100 of Best Buy gift cards which has to be my game budget that last me until at least summer.

I'm seriously considering this and Bioshock Infinite (PC versions @ $49 a piece) as my two choices.

I did love Crystal D's original 3 reboots, but I'm just not sure I want to blow all my cash this soon. Hrm. Would be nice if there were some deals and I could at least save $20 for a steam wallet code or something...

Despite looking forward to the game, I'm surprised by how positive the reviews are, but after going through a few of them, I think I'm going to pass on it. I can't believe how grisly the GameTrailers review is, and if the amount of blood and gore in every shot wasn't so bothersome, it would be comical. There's a shot in the review that looks like it's hitting Saw levels of absurdity. No thanks.

Who do you think was cheering at the end of the TLOU reveal?

All Tomb Raider games have a lot of enemies. The difference is, they weren't the focus of the game. Your ordinary fight scenario in previous Tomb Raider games was like that: an enemy appear, you draw weapons, autolock at the enemy and start shooting while jumping left and right; 5 seconds later the fight is over and you can return to the real deal, i.e. exploration and platforming.

Personally, I haven't seen anything unique from this game that warrants full-price and a lot of it sounds like wasted potential.

An actual survival action-adventure game set on an island with these kind of production values would be awesome. A 3rd person Miasmata. Proper hunting and feeding mechanics. Scavenging and scrounging for weapons with limited ammo. Animals being more dangerous than humans, maybe you could take advantage of animals vs human enemies AI like Far Cry 3. Humans acting more like combat puzzles in I Am Alive. Seeing a vulnerable female character transform into a strong hero properly paced over 13 hours. Adaptive dialogue and behavior like Spec Ops The Line. Forming proper human relationships with other survivors.

That sounds like genre-defying, experimental stuff but maybe it's too soon.

It sounds like they screwed up the pacing of the character transformation and combat encounters. Nothing about this game inspires me to play it. It looks predictable and safe, will people really think about this, GOTY time?

So, I took a screenshot from that comparison video and I would have to agree that the PS3 does look better than the Xbox 360 version. While they are both nearly identical it really does come down to the clarity of the textures.
Note: It is obvious that YouTube and imgur use their own file compressions which lower the original image quality but you can still see the differences.

So Gametrailers gives Resident Evil 6 an 88 and Tomb Raider an 85.
Huh... strange world we live in. Then again I enjoyed Resident Evil 6's Mercenaries mode.

Spot on. The balance was absolutely perfect - a couple of lions here and there, and then thirty minutes of traversal. It's the opposite to Uncharted (1 at least, 2 less so) in which 20 minutes of combat is followed by 5 minutes of traversal.

The xbox logo also looks more blurry than the ps3 logo. MSLOL.

Yeah the 360 version looks blurry looks either a different aa causing it to look like that or its running at a lower res.

No but not every game needs to be GOTY. Despite me not liking the direction, I'm also pretty certain I'll get more fun out of this than something like journey (if not ultimately in a brain dead way).

Apparently it is what it is and maybe me not picking up any othet AAAAAA games lately has put me in the mood for some flashy fun.

Having said that I agree on not paying full price. $36 on GMG or $30 on nuuvem make it a lot easier to buy for PC.

Underworld had levels like storming a ship and taking out heaps of soldiers. There was heaps of combat, it was just crap.

The older games? Yeah, different story... But I feel this is the tomb raider game they have probably wanted to make for a long time.

I don't disagree with you, exactly. And I still need to play Miasmata. But I just enjoy "popcorn" games every now and then and I'm really bored with the shooter variety. Plus I do have an affinity for the franchise.

Anywya, I found a solution to my dilmemma:

Amazon has it for $44.99 for PC version - 25% off with Cheapassgamer.com coupon code "CAGROCKS" = $33.

So looks like I'm driving to Best Buy and trading my Best Buy gift cards for Amazon Gift Cards. :)

Bummer that the code doesn't seem to work on Bioshock, though.

Hard to tell based on shitty YouTube quality, but the PS3 version does look a bit more defined (360 version has that extra layer of vaseline?).

It is without a doubt a missed opportunity.

Just think of how amazing a TR game that focuses on ACTUAL SURVIVAL could be. It almost makes me cry.

Nevertheless, if they made a good adventure game, frankly, that's enough for me to sign on for $33.

I love Derrick's posts, even on the (increasingly rare) occasion that I find them ridiculously unfair, but painting him as always negative isn't as accurate as it may feel.

Derrick, Amir0x, and Riposte are three people I don't agree with on a lot of things, but who approach things from a similar gameplay-first stance as I do and so I frequently seek out their opinions. The fact that they may often be the most obvious vocal minority means they enjoy a lot of different genres and have strong expectations for them, and so they turn up everywhere you happen to be.

I'm just saying, if you think someone is a joke and don't care to engage with them, do everyone (most of all yourself) a favor and put them on ignore.

I don't find them as a joke though, they are very much people with valid criticism and concerns. I just don't relate to them when it comes to my personal experiences in the slightest. Yet I laugh because I almost can always know their posts will be negative, and to the extremes most the time. I'd rather not put them on ignore, nor do I go out of my way to argue or fight with them either.

In the old games (pre-Legend) combat was the appetizer and platforming/exploration/were the main plate.
In Legend combat was the main plate.
In Underworld it was a plate the same size as every other plate on the table.
In the reboot it's the whole fucking menu.

Great scores, i'm looking forward to playing this.

These Uncharted vs Tomb Raider arguments are funny. Having played all the games in both franchises, I love em both. I'm glad Crystal Dynamics picked up a few things from the Uncharted series, and i'm hoping Naughty Dog does the same. An open-world Uncharted could be pretty cool.

Guys, it's okay...

Yeah but you have to admit, even if you like both, which I do, there are far fewer games with the pacing of the Edios or even the original Crystal D Tomb Raider games. They were much quieter, more contemplative where you spent lots of times wandering around giant caverns and observing multi-room spanning puzzles. I enjoyed that pacing. It seems like it has perhaps now been mostly traded in for lots more "bang-wiz-wow."

I think I'll wait for DF too.
My first reply was that the PS3 version was looking better, but then I thought of a comparison on youtube of NFS Most Wanted. most wanted comparison In that vid the 360 version looked the part. I double dipped on the game, but in the end the PS3 version looked better and played smoother. So it may be wise to wait for some other comparisons to show up.

There are already walkthrough videos on youtube. I think this game looks good (graphics and gameplay). If you love Uncharted (I didn't like the third game though) you will probably love the new Tomb Raider.

After watching a lot of leaked gameplay footage, there's no replayability for this Tomb Raider. Having to cross a log for 5 minutes is boring the first time, Lara moaning and being in pain for a minute and then dragging yourself to the next cutscene for 5 minutes wouldn't be fun to see multiple times.

These review scores seem to be based on appreciation for this sort of game design instead of actually analyzing it.

Well the game can have a crap story that completely conflicts with the gameplay, but if the game is fun then it should still get a solid score.

I can't tell you what the fuck Bayonetta is about but it's one of my favorite games of this gen.

It can sorta work the other way too. I thought Enslaved and Spec Ops had very mediocre gameplay but I was hooked by the narrative. Spec Ops did definitely have some fun parts to it though.

Damn it. I hate this post, because I'm kind of looking forward to playing Lara's Misfortune. At the same time, I don't derive joy from watching others see the franchises they've liked go under the knife to be more attractive to a different audience.

So people that played this game, with spoil tags, is there any explanation of the transition from vulnerable lara to super soldier? Former military training? Magic tattoo?

I disagree. Bar two (completely unnecessary and boring) sections where you raid Amanda's ship filled with sailors there wasn't that much shooting in the game. Most of the areas were empty or had only few enemies that you could quickly deal with. Also, the game gave you an option to decrease enemies' health bars so you could kill them more easily.

The reviews alone tell you that it's a single moment that is quickly moved on from. The transition is practically instantaneous.

One review I watched showed almost the entire scene.

So is this going to be the first Tomb Raider game that doesn't involve ridiculous super natural enemies/story beats? If so, sign me up.
