iOS Gaming Thread April 2013: Now with GAF Gold IAP

I don't think we've had many, if any positive opinions on The Other Brothers either.

I think the OP should only have games that are overwhelmingly approved by GAF. If that means going weeks without something new, so be it. Just the best of the best.
Agree with that. TOB clearly isn't top tier. We should wait a while before adding in recommendations etc.

Just quote stuff from this thread. And you should be allowed to take stuff on and off if the game 'loses interest super fast', like that fish game.

I'm back! :)
We can add an appshopper row to the GAF iOS membership list, what do you say?

Also, about impressions: I'd say we had many about Fish out of the water at the very least.
Game is not very good, IMO. Good for an afternoon at the most, no compelling score mechanics, zero lasting appeal.

Fully agreed on the impressions/OP contents parts, I'll curate the OP some tomorrow. We should maybe also add a GAF rating to each game? :)

(lol)

Regarding AppShopper I was working on some ideas for new OP grafix and slapped these together earlier today;

1) New pic/way of viewing the Membership list

2) Similar pic/way of viewing AppShopper names (added people who listed their earlier here already)

This sheet also has a webform to enter yourself into, testing to see if this is viable to not be spammed to death like the iOS member list was once in times of yore.

###
The form to enter yourself to the list is here: quote to see
###

The idea of adding them onto the Membership list is however another good idea, I'll leave it as is for a little while and see if this works out.

((both of these bits are currently in the OP under the iOS Community section))

I'm also thinking of doing something for post #2 next month (If I end up hosting!) akin to a "Best of iOS GAF feature" containing the top tier games from say the last 6-12 months + reasons why they're so awesome you can't afford not to spend bubblegum money on them (I need your input here of games you'd like to see highlighted etc.) -- or maybe this is for another thread altogether again? We haven't had one of those in a while..

Thoughts?

looking great!

rating is silly imo when (most) games costing less than a fast food combo lol. I love that icon though, every game that makes the front page deserves one :D

Which version do you recommend picking up, iOS or steam?

Played it on iPad/iPhone myself, it's a first person exploration game, controls are fine since there's no reactionary or twitch-shooter moments. I'd say its up to you what you prefer to play on. Steam big picture on a TV I think does wonders for this sort of game too.

2013 continues to be year of the point-and-click adventure games on iOS for me.

Here's my list that I've played so far:

Year Walk
The Silent Age
Broken Sword
Broken Sword 2
Beneath a Steel Sky
Gemini Rue
Ghost Trick

Just finished Ghost Trick earlier today. I really enjoyed the game and it had a neat, albeit a bit convoluted, story. The way they deliver the story was painfully slow, though. And sometimes my phone wouldn't save appropriately causing me to backtrack through horrifically slow dialogue. Gameplay was different and interesting, though.

So what should I get into next? Finding Teddy, The Journey Down, or Cognition?

Plowed through Finding Teddy in a couple of hours. Fun and charming game although it was a bit short. Can't seem to find Cognition on the iPhone app store. Is it iPad only? Guess I'll dive into The Journey Down now if that's the case.

Have you played Fetch and Machinarium?

Never heard of Fetch. I have Machinarium on Steam, but only played it for a half hour or so before getting distracted and really just forgetting it existed.

edit: looks like Fetch is possibly iPad only. Can't find it on my iPhone. I've got an iPad, but I primarily game on my phone. Cross-play/cloud save syncing is optimal, but so far only the Broken Sword games have delivered on this from what I've played.

I've been playing some Slayin' again and I was wondering how far you guys got before dying. I've been able to beat the plant boss and advance to the 5th stage, but that's it. It gets pretty brutal once you beat the slimes. I've tried out the Mage and it seems like playing as her is even more timing based and harder than the knight. She does have a handy fireball attack.
I wonder how many different bosses there are, can't find info on that anywhere.

Thought it was ok when I got it, but I keep going back to it for some reason. People recommended Spell Sword here as a similar and superior game, but I like Slayin' more tbh.

So is it looking like Star Command's not out this week then?

Nope.

I love the aesthetic and music but have the same issue. On top of that the controls are too big on even the iPad mini, no idea how full size iPad'ers play it.

iron man 3 actually looks kinda fun.

Seriously, if gameloft didn't make ios games, i'd probably still be using my iphone 4. And I don't even buy gameloft games outside of modern combat.

City of Secrets 1 & 2 are on sale for 99 cents. Also the 1112 series is probably worth your time as well. Cognition and Journey Down are okay, but pretty slow paced.

Edit: Also Hiversaires looks like an awesome point and click, but I haven't gotten around to playing that one yet.

Downloading City of Secrets 1 right now. Anyone started the sequel yet? I guess I'll try out the original first, but I'm thinking I might as well grab 2: Ep 1 while it's on sale.

And yes, Hiversaires looks fantastic, but maybe it will be on sale by the time I ready for the next adventure game. In any case, my year of the point-n-click continues...

I've played like 20 minutes of the sequel, but from what I've read they've improved upon the writing from the first one, which at times thinks it's much more clever than it actually is. I'll post some impressions once I play more.

I support your point-n-click quest. There's some gems to be found on iOS, for sure.

oh god, apparently iron man 3 has timers.

endless runner with timers to upgrade and fix armors and stuff like real racing 3.

Guess I'm not dling that tonight.

Everything has timers now. The latest iOS7 rumour is that you can only download one app every 30 minutes, and if you want to download more than that you have to pay 69p for a "lightning charge" which resets your timer to zero.

I love slayin. I've unlocked everything but the boss mode, just playing.
If you find frantic the level 5, unlock the advanced mode (pure madness).
Great little game, super tight controls.
I think my record is around 55K, I've beaten the boss after the plant one.

It's helping me in the waiting for Warhammer Quest.

See, I loved House of the Dead Overkill. And I think iPad is a great platform for light gun shooters. But something about Sega charging $4.99 with an extra $2 charge for the third episode of the game doesn't sit right with me. I understand why they won't, but I wish they'd just release it at $6.99 so I wouldn't have to feel like I'm being taken advantage of.
