A quick look at the XBOX 360 start

Man, guys, this thread is giving me so many nostalgia feels. I want to go back! Not for the blade UIs or RRoDs but for the anticipation phase of Gears, Crackdown, Mass Effect and BioShock. I want to experience Rock Band for the first time again. I want to get to 10k Gamerscore again and be excited when we get back-to-back weeks of XBLA releases. (Summer of Arcade!) I want to hear rumors of the awesome new Rare sequels and fresh ideas. I want Halo 3 to be unveiled and a Call of Duty 4 announcement. Blue Dragon: Dragon Quest, Lost Odyssey: Final Fantasy.

This Gen has been pretty great. Fuck the haters.

Wasn't just the launch units, even a few motherboard revisions down RRoD was common, I had one on a Falcon motherboard revision. I think even whatever the last one on the fat 360 was had them, but far less common, the slim finally fixed it for good.

I realize this was a common problem with the 360 fat units in general that did get some ironing out over time. But this was still a pretty big clusterfuck on Microsofts part. The original XBox may have looked like a tank, but it was a thermally sound machine that never had overheating issues. The XBox 360 designed favored a smaller form factor and nicer ascetics over a good thermal dynamic design, and that was a mistake. Though they did fix it with the 360 Slim's Trinity and Corona designs by putting the CPU and GPU on a smaller die and decreasing the overall power consumption.

I'm sure MS has learned from this mistake with the NextBox though, and are doing everything they can to avoid this again.

i still remember the xbox 360 launch since it was amazing. I had project gotham racing 3, perfect dark zero and call of duty 2 at launch and i was hooked for weeks.
was really great and there were more games at launch that i could have easily got.

Kameo, Condemned were great rentals and such a great variety.

also the ability to download demos was huge for me since im not a pc gamer and i used to get demo discs monthly, i miss the start of this gen

I remember paying way too much for a launch 360 because I bought one of those gamestop bundles with lots of games and accessories. Condemned was my favorite, followed by Call of Duty 2. Gun and PGR were also kinda fun, but I didn't enjoy Kameo enough to finish it.

The highlight of the first year of 360 for me was GRAW. I was regularly hauling my console to a friend's house to play 4 player split screen online with my brother and 2 buddies. We sucked but it was awesome. I will always have fond memories of sniping (and getting sniped) on Nowhere.

I didn't quite get it at launch (about a month later based on being up late and Best Buy.com having them in stock for a minute)....

Perfect Dark Zero - don't really care what people say about this game, I enjoyed the single player and the multiplayer I remember being really good.

PGR3, Call of Duty 2 - mind blown

Kameo - really, really enjoyed this when I haven't really beaten a lot of platformers in my time.

Geometry Wars and Hexic HD - perfect openers for Live.

GRAW 1, Rainbow Six Vegas, Gears of War - first games to make my jaw drop this generation.

Having a really nice PC, I'll most likely choose to either go PS4 or Infinite (not both), but damn..... Microsoft really set the console bar with the 360, really miss those days.

Playing PGR3 on a 14" SDTV in a college room away from home, I really didn't want to go in for class that afternoon after picking the system up at 8:30 AM opening from a Gamestation close by with my house mate.

I still have the small white pack in remote that came with original pro models.

I remember Bethesda's start up splash right before Oblivion came on screen the first time. That was my first experience with next-gen and I was fucking amazed. Then I played GRAW and my jaw dropped a little. I wouldn't really drop my jaw again until Gears of War came out a few months later.

I miss the Blades. They got cluttered toward the end of its life cycle, but I still prefer its utility over the subsequent iterations of the dashboard.

Microsoft's first/second party was pretty awesome from 2005-2010. New IPs like Kameo, Gears, Viva Pinata, Mass Effect, Crackdown and Alan Wake. In addition to old IPs, Halo, PGR, Fable, Forza, Perfect Dark, and Banjo.

Some really great stuff. Hope they can match it with the Durango.

Last year of college. My girlfriend was a freshman in college. I'm 30 now. That shot would not fly.

We have to go back, guys.

Too this day I never had a 360, I always wanted one though, but at the start of this gen I was a Wii60 fanboy lol, I bashed the PS3 and kept saying it's just a "more expansive 360 with less games", and the funny thing was I was a huge PS2 gamer back in the 6th gen along with GameCube and only had a few Xbox games.

Now I have a Wii/PS3 for 7th gen consoles, so it's funny how I changed from being a Wii60 lover to a WiiPS3 lover lol.

Maybe 1 day I'll get a 360, especially if they lower the price of the 360 when the 720 releases.

Everyone seems to have forgotten one of the greatest sports games ever:

Bought it when I picked up my 360 as it was £20 while every other game was £40-45. Totally awesome game. I wish they did a PC port in addition to the Wii port, really want to play it again without having to dust off my old copy which is god know's where.

I remember when I bought the 360. It was Feb 2006. I left work for lunch and was in a sour mood because of some email that I had just read at my desk.

I idly headed to the Best Buy in the mall after eating and a worker was taking 2 units off the trolley and placing them on the shelf. they were still nearly impossible to find at this time. Since I was in this weirdly negative mood, I made a very expensive impulse purchase (I'm dumb that way) and bought the 360, DOA4 and PGR3 that minute. total was around 800, I think, after taxes

PGR3 was awesome. Not $800 awesome, but still pretty sweet.

Anyway, I got in just a few months before Oblivion and Ghost Recon really made the machine worthwhile to me.

I liked Perfect Dark Zero, even if it was a poor Perfect Dark sequel and a not so great shooter in general. Wasn't the worst shit ever though.

CoD2 was godly. Played the shit out of that with my brother, some of the most fun I have had in a multiplayer game.

I get the "leaderboards/beating your friends score" part.
He's trying to find a polite way of saying that the game is for masochists. The allure of the game is that it's so difficult.

Thread is missing the hopes and dreams of Japan support:

Mistwalker was the main reason I bought a 360. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey looked amazing at the time. Lost Odyssey lived up to the hype and I enjoyed every second of it, Blue Dragon on the other hand....not so much

I was in 9th grade when I first got mine. I remember I remember I saved up at my first (and only) job 399 US dollars to get a 360. Bought it the second I had the money even though I didn't have enough for a game. Hooked it up and played Hexic HD for hours.

So many hours playing Halo 3 and Gears of War. I actually bought 2 copies of Gears because my 360 stopped reading the first copy. Played A LOT of Saints Row and Crackdown too, and I remember enjoying SOTN as well.

360 really was a great console, in spite of its hardware issues.

EDIT: Also important was that the second I got it online, I downloaded a bunch of demos. I was amazed that I could experience current gen games, often any game I wanted, for free ( my PCs have always been crappy ).

I get what it's about. But the difficulty was goofy as hell. It ramps up so ridiculously fast.

That's a good thing.

On the other hand there are games like Lumines which I liked playing, but it took me 30mins to get to the challenging part.

I was a pretty huge xbox fanboy which this gen started, which is just crazy for me to think about now. I used to LOVE Xbox, and to a lesser extent the 360. Cool to look back on this now.

Perfect Dark Zero was mindblowing back in 2005. Perfect Dark was me and my friends favourite game so I rented the console (when you could still rent consoles) and invited him over. Everything was shiny, but it was awesome.

Also, Playing Gears 1 with my friends and having people actually talk in game was one of the coolest things. I worry we'll never see that again with the addition of party chat. Games need to have playlists where Microphones are required to play.

my first friend on live I still talk too. I don't know who he is, and never met him, but we still text about recent games. I'm beating him is gamerscore, but the last 2 years hes coming close.

The feels, man. I am feeling them. Slept out at Costco for a day 1 release unit. I'm not sure if I should be ashamed or amazed at how much my life has revolved around this thing since that day.

Yeah, probably ashamed.

sigh. alan wake was such a disappointment for me. i wanted to like it so much.
You are a bad person.

Oh, Xbox... you started out my favorite, and somehow slid into second. I am hoping for the best in your successor.

Holy crap, I forgot about that. That is as you say.

I remember being blown away by that.

Now it looks so blury and bland

Microsoft was so amazing and aggressive at the beginning. One of the reasons I don't count them out yet.

That JRPG support man...coming straight from the ps2 was something else. Was excited as hell for Star Ocean 4.

The first couple hours of Mass Effect was just fucking wow.

That whole period was awesome.
