Sonic Lost Worlds Debut Trailer [Up: Wii U + 3DS screenshots]

Just to confirm: are there any signs of homing attacks in the trailer? I know there's bouncing, and we don't know much about the kicking, but I hope that other stuff's gone.

Same goes for boosting as well.

I think that this look just fits Sonic more than hyper-detailed worlds, as well. Unleashed had some beautiful stage design, and Generations really brought to life the classic stages with the Hedgehog Engine, but I think that keeping things simple and flat just suits this series more than fantastically detailed worlds that just so happen to include loops and rings. This truly looks like "Sonic's world", as opposed to "Sonic living in our world with Pixar lookalikes".

How is a bunch of simplistic patterns ,,Sonics world''? It looks like an early Sonic game, if you only ever played the special stages, lol. Sonic 3 & Knuckles also was full of details everywhere. The adventure games were a tonal shift, but they were also the biggest offenders with it's ,,realism'', which was obviously reduced after the whole series went to shit with Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06.

Holy shit, if I didn't have a Wii U right now I would buy one immediately. And keep in mind the only Sonic game I've ever enjoyed was Sonic Colors.

I didn't see the homing attack either, but I have less experience with 3D sonic than some people, so maybe I missed it.

Looks to me like a normal momentum based jump-on-enemies mechanic.

Visually, Its hard to make a fair comparison to Generations to me. Both are going for something completely different in terms of style. Generations has tons of earth-tone colors with a slight realistic tone and Lost World has very vibrant colors with a surreal tone.

Both are gorgeous in their own right.
Team square grass though

Boosting appears to be gone, but I think Homing attack is there, but it looks different... Its kind of hard to tell in the trailer, but either Sonic has some kind of rapid bounce attack or he can home things very quickly in this title. It might be some new mechanic as Sonic doesn't seem to home in on enemies in the trailer, but there are two sections where there's a long row of enemies he seems to rapidly smash in succession.

You missed out on a great game called Sonic Generations. But I do agree Sonic Colors added more depth to the SOnic formula Brought it into Super Mario Bros/Galaxy territory almost.

This screams a combination of sonic colors, Generations, and Mario Galaxy rolled into one package.

So stoked!!

It looks like homing is in, at about 0:34 when he attacks the fish. I kind of wish some of the extra mechanics we're cut too though.

We'll need to see it in profile to know if it's homing or bouncing a la that thingamajig in SA2.

Graphically that looks kinda weak. Something about it looks off.

Gameplay, I dunno, it's fucking Sonic, I'd probably play it if it got a bomba price cut. Nothing about this looks bad or good.

Good call. Well fuck, but at least they ditched boosting. It seems like they've cut down on homing-heavy sections, however, so maybe it works differently. Using it for close-combat makes more sense than having it be a level design crutch.

Wow... that looks pretty damn good

Sonic Generations X Super Mario Galaxy

I don't care if people think that Sonic is a washed up franchise... this game looks like a system seller to me.

Seeing that side by side of Generations vs Lost Worlds, yeah i gotta say the art style is much... simpler. Didn't realize just how much before.

I wonder if this is by the Generations Team or the Colors team.

Doesn't look that graphically impressive. Aesthetically it looks like the standard Sonic style. Gameplay wise it looks fun. I'm glad the Galaxy planetoids are being used.

Homing Attack is a great thing for 3D Sonic, 2D Sonic it's not needed.
If the developers could find a way to transfer 2D Sonic's physics manipulation over to a 3D environment, there wouldn't be a need for homing attacks. That's why I think they're mostly in place as substitutes for something better. On the other hand, many people like the direction Unleashed and Colors took with the 3D game mechanics; I'm not one of them, since I think the 2D Sonic games are more complex and replayable on the basis of their physics. I mean, people saw how gracefully Mario transitioned with 64, so the fact that the Sonic developers haven't accomplished something similar says something.

I would have to agree with you, this and Wonderful 101 are system sellers. It just sucks that Sega made this co-venture with Nintendo late in the launch cycle. Had I seen this trailer back in September along with Wonderful 101 and Super Smash Bros, I would have bought one instantly.

This now has got me pumped to get a Wii U, but I have to wait and see after E3. If Sony and Microsoft are using some kind of Disc based DRM and make it so I can't bring a game over and couch play. Then It looks like I'm sticking with my PC, PS3, and buying a Wii U.

But only for Nintendo exclusives like this, I won't be playing Watch Dogs on it, when I can play on my pc.

Oh yea, I want to get a GTX 770 to replace my aging GTX 570.

The homing attack didn't exist because of the lack of classic physics. It exists because it'd be way too hard to hit enemies in 3D space, especially when you're running so fast.

I surprised we haven't gotten more info yet.

It'll probably show up during IGN's evening update (whatever time that usually is)

I hope they got some hands-on time, and maybe an interview. Maybe we can get a real sense for what this game will be like.

I liked what I saw in the trailer. Will probably pick this one up. Hopefully it is at least as good as Colors. I would really like to be able to count on the Sonic franchise again.

I'm well aware, and I know it's a frightening proposition to make that work. So when I thought for a second that this game had switched to a bouncing mechanism, it occurred to me that the developers had found a compromise that could work.

For that matter, Sonic isn't running as fast here as he has been in recent games. There's less of an excuse now.

Is anyone else a bit perplexed that Sega has shown all (main) bosses from the game in its debut trailer? I wonder if there is an even bigger reveal that will tie this game with the next Sonic game or maybe another franchise? I mean why spoil all the fun by showing the bosses now when the game is coming out later in the year?

Maybe they think this game can stand on it's level design? Would be a first for 3D sonic....

Notice how each of the bosses corresponds to a certain Chaos Emerald?

Every color's there—except white. There's one more to be revealed. The above possibility would be best, though.

I see Badniks, so I expect to see some Rotbotnik.

My guess is that this is made by the Sonic Colors team, if that means anything.

The three Wii-U exclusive Sonic game deal also makes sense to me. SEGA a few years back decided to go in a direction where there would be three main Sonic teams, I am not going to look up an article right now but they said they had the 'Mario & Sonic' team, the 'Storybook' team, and the 'Unleashed' team. Since then, the Storybook team made Colors and the Unleashed team made Generations.

So, with this in mind, SEGA made a three Sonic-game deal with Nintendo, and so far we have seen two of the three games. The first one is a Mario & Sonic game, which is self-explanatory, and this one looks like a Secret Rings/Colors team game. It has that sort of look and quirkiness to it; the team usually has stranger titles, but arguably more imaginative ones. My guess then is that the third unannounced game will be the new game by the Unleashed/Generations team.

Eggman has to be in because Badniks. However, someone pointed out that the villains all perfectly match the colors of the Chaos Emeralds, but there's one missing, which would be the White Emerald.

I hope it's down to the poor trailer quality but the visuals look hugely disappointing to my eyes, it doesn't look as good as Sonic Generations:

sonic-generations-green-hill-zone-2.jpg

As an exclusive I hoped we'd see something a jump above current Wii U titles :-(

Wow, it looks... really, really good.

I really like the simpler art style. I always felt that Generations looked too busy and was harsh on my eyes. This looks more like a 3D version of the old 2D Sonic games graphically.

I didn't even think of Mario Galaxy when I saw the trailer, but... I can't really see the comparison.
