Sony CEO Kaz Hirai: PS4 is first and foremost a game console

Thank god. All that other shite can be done on my phone or tv anyway. And no, i don't want to talk to my gadgets.

Both consoles will play games; one is downplaying the other aspects because the other got mauled for playing up theirs.

MS reveal - all about entertainment, etc
PS4 reveal - all about the games

E3 MS - about the games, some entertainment talk
E3 Sony - about the entertainment, some games talk

It's clear what vision each company has. Sony is about games and MS is entertainment. you can even tell towards the end of this gen with both companies. Also you can tell since more am is toward games for ps4. MS uses less and more towards the os for non gaming apps.

............. and since it is a game console .................. it should prioritize games and all aspects of them ............ like being able to rent, trade, or share them ............ RIGHT SONY!?!?!?

Come on! Give us a definitive answer already so we can finally end the annoying speculation.

It's all about dem gamez. Clear message at least from Sony. I hope for them the console gaming market is still big enough.

I agree with the last part but not the first. MS said they wanted to get the boring stuff out of the way first so that they can focus on games at E3. A billion dollars invested on games but everyone's focus is on the features that MS didn't really want to showcase at a video games convention.
The thing is, MS started damage controlling it all that way POST-Xbone reveal. Before their big event they were all "witness the revolution in entertainment!!!!!!", yet what they showed was partly either embarassingly bad, full of empty buzz words or just not interesting/even usable for a majority of gamers (and partly not even real, i.e. the voice recognition stuff), with ridiculous hyperbole like "omg never before seen revolutionary Skype" as if that's something new. They weren't all "okay, we'll get the bad stuff out of the way first", they did say there would not be a focus on games but they still thought what they'd show would blow our minds.

You guys buy into the PR that you want to believe.

No, I buy into the specs, as well as the obvious direction they are taking. In the case of Sony and the PS4, they are not just talking shit about games being the top priority. They went to developers and had a guy like Mark Cerny at the helm with strictly gaming in mind. The proof is in the pudding.

Sure, it will have services and such. But not 3 operating systems worth devoted to cable box features, etc. It's gaming first as usual, then other features as branches off that tree.

Sony is smart by pleasing the gamers first in announcements. Obviously it will have a lot of other media-related features but they know the actual core gamers are the ones that get a console started and give it the momentum. It'd be stupid to believe that they aren't going to go after the entertainment market, but pleasing gamers is first and foremost and they know what to say after MS's PR blitz.

Can somebody explain this billion dollars MS is spending on games posters keep mentioning in here. Seems unbelievable to spend on 15 games are next gen cost that crazy or just money spent to secure 3rd party exclusives.

Hey, games aint cheap in this day and age.

However, I am sure a BIG chunk of that money is going to moneyhat BS like the CoD: Ghost timed exclusive DLC.

Lol, Sony and MS are both after the same thing (control of the living room). That's been the stated objective since before the PS3 was launched for Sony (see Kutaragi's comments). Whether control of this metaphorical 'living room' is possible or not remains to be seen.

Is it not funny how someone has to state the obvious in this day and age about a game console?

Like saying that it is for games and gamers?

HAVE WE REALLY COME TO THIS

I blame microsoft and the Wii (paritally)

It's like MS learned nothing from the PS3 case study. For a year Sony tried to sell a multimedia box with a Blu-ray player advertised as the major feature at $599 and made it about "value" sales were awful. By 2008 they changed their tune to gaming first and cut the price to $399 to reflect that the Blu-ray player was just an extra that you get in addition to gaming, not the main focus, sales improved.

all this momentum and good buzz can be destroyed in a moment.

The thing about Sony is that something dumb is waiting right around the corner at all times....

The Vita looked gdlk and then the memory card (or something else) came out and the hype teetered out (also no games).

I feel like Sony has something dumb up their sleeves sadly they always seem to.

But man they are doing all the right things so far...so I hope I am wrong.

If it isn't the DRM shit (which I doubt they say anything about if it's negative during the PC), then I expect them to either take too long on PS3 or Vita (lulz) or hit us with another Wonderbook.

The Wii was a more pure gaming console than both Microsoft and Sony. Outside of Netflix, the Wii was 100% all about games.

Oh, good. I must have imagined all those video sharing/Facebook segments then.
That auto-video recording stuff is used for GAMES. It's not something that's trying to compete with your gaming time like watching TV, it's a feature that will bring a new dimension to many people's GAMING, when they can so easily share funny/cool moments or triumphs during their gaming sessions, instead of needing modded hardware or expensive video capturing devices to do it.
