Take-Two expects GTA V to sell 18 million in first year, RDR DLC very profitable

I think they underestimate how many people they put off with gta4 and the fact that standards are higher now for open world games for some people(just cause 2)
18 million seems ridiculously high

Just Cause 2 is worse than GTA IV, it's worse than all the old 3D GTA's, hell, it's worse than Driver San Francisco.

Open world games are subjective as hell, GTA IV is still in the top 20 for Xbox Live activity, GTA V is going to be eaten up like crazy.

Holding out hope that there will be nextgen versions of GTAV. GTAIV chugged on the ps3 and looked like someone forgot to defog the screen half the time. Rather play it on the PS4with a steady framerate and a nice resolution.
But look at the amazing IQ:

They missed a huge opportunity not adding zombies into GTA IV.

Remove all the peds.

Just zombies in a barren, apocalyptic Liberty City.
There were a million mods like that on PC, they were pretty fun, too.
I wonder if GTA V is a legitimate threat to PS4/Xbone performing well this fall/holiday.
It is for me.
If it didn't came out, i would've probably considered buying a PS4 at launch more seriously.

Just Cause 2 was so incredibly barren and lifeless. Fun to play at times, with some cool toys, but if that is the "higher standard" open world games should try to match then count me out. No open world game to this day(RDR excluded), with maybe Sleeping Dogs coming close in some areas, matches the personality and sense of a lived in place that GTAIV created. From the constantly shifting news and radio, to the routines of the pedestrians(however basic at times), and the random encounters with familiar characters scattered over the city

Can understand people not liking the gameplay, it's a lot of shooting and chases, but Saints Row 3 and its ilk aren't any better. Meh!

And I had no clue people didn't like the multiplayer in GTAIV. I put dozens of hours into it, the free roam mode was incredible to mess around in and the more specific game types like Cops and Robbers were a blast.

My favorite multiplayer suite of all time easily, can't wait to see what they do with V. Red Dead Redemption opened up the free roam mode even more so I don't expect to be disappointed.

Zombies sell, but I'd like to think that Undead Nightmare did well because it had substantially more content than the other RDR DLC offerings. I'd hope they'd take that into consideration as well.

I still don't understand why Rockstar and Take 2 left money on the table with RDR. Even a year later PC release that some spare programmers retooled from the 360 version would have sold like hotcakes along with DLC sales.

That doesnt mean anything. Outside of top 5 or so the numbers arent that big.

Well, Minecraft and Mario Kart Wii, to make two recent examples, are not AAAA titles, yet they sold a boatload of copies.

I think Mario Kart is entirely triple A. Mincecraft wasn't, but it's the go-to example precisely because it's so rare. A strategy that relies on your game being the next minecraft is significantly more dangerous than one that relies on it being AAA.

If more games did DLC like Rockstar did for RDR(Undead Nightmare) and GTA4 (Ballad of Gay Tony etc.) I'd be more incline to support DLC.

Also, gimme some more of that Free Roam online GTA action, I never had so much fun playing a game online with friends.

Edit -- Yeah, people having problems with GTA4 online is news to me also, I never had lag/latency problems outside of release week.

Have you seen/read the previews, etc for GTA V? It has the best of everything R* has done this gen.

Previews for 4 were amazing too. I'll play a wait and see approach this time.

So make it Carmageddon in a way? Would play that.

Why would anyone with a console and a slight interest in games buy any game other than GTA 5? It sounds like GTA 5 will be one of the most content rich titles available on console, maybe even the most content rich (After Skyrim, I assume.). It has tons of freedom, so you're not forced down a narrative. The content to price ratio will most likely be awesome.

In regards to "next gen" comments -- why? The developers have basically mastered the console architecture now. These games will be the best of the best on the console, while the newest games on the upcoming consoles will surely not be as great as they can be, and have typical "next gen console" issues. Why would you want the developers to put these titles on a new console, a console they've barely worked on? Increased asset resolution and all related costs just means that the games will be smaller and emptier. Do graphics really matter that much to you? Next gen consoles are just as likely to innovate gameplay-wise as current gen consoles are. Actually, current gen consoles are far more likely to innovate with gameplay.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if the entire ocean floor will be explorable, or will it be limited to a certain area around the main island(s)? Like if you swim out 200 meters you'd hit an invisible wall. I assume the game will have boats, so if the entire ocean floor isn't explorable, it'd be kind of awkward -- like if you jump off a boat 200 meters out, you'd be able to swim around, but if you jump off the boat 400 meters out, you just respawn in the boat/at the shore?

Thinks he should have been the one to kill Batman's parents.

The previews written by the enthusiast press for a AAA franchise entry from Rockstar are extremely positive? The hell you say . . .

Mario Kart AAA? How much did it cost to make? I mean surely not nearly as much as a big budget HD console game.

I guess that is probably why are emphatically denying next-gen SKUs. Unless they launch GOTY editions on those platforms a year out, it could possibly cannibalize the launch in September.

Indeed. Announcing a next gen version would just lead to a lot of indecisiveness among consumers.

Mario Kart is absolutely a AAA title. Any first-party Nintendo game is.

Now Minecraft is a good example, but everyone knows that's an anomaly.

I loved GTA4. Not sure what the hate is about regarding that fantastic game.

yep i was probably gonna skip new console this year anyways but gta v made the decision that much easier.

it will end the gen with a huge bang.

People who are still invested in the PS3/360 were likely never the target audience for PS4/XBO.

I think PS4/XBO are going to sell to those who aren't interested in last gen graphics anymore i.e long time PS3/360 owners.

So $ spent determines 'AAA' status? OK.

Mario Kart is a flagship Nintendo title that to me is 'AAA'.

It's a combination of money invested AND general expectations.
But if they expect 50 million copies sold from Wii Sports, it still doesn't make it an AAAA production.

The people put off by GTA IV don't really matter. With four years of sustained sales and a healthy online community to this day it would seem they replaced those people pretty quickly.

As for standards being higher, that's all subjective and doesn't really mean much in terms of what Take-Two believes V will sell. None of the competition has shown an ability to challenge Rockstar's open-world games. Save for maybe Assassin's Creed. And Skyrim, though that's a fairly different game.
