Xbox boss says hardware analysis between consoles is “meaningless”

“The problem is that Sony decided to go out and publish a bunch of numbers, which are in some ways meaningless,"
...

"on top of all the magic we're going to add with the instant switching, and the power of the cloud."

Lol, okay.

"...because people are debating things which they don’t know about, and we have no intention of remedying that by providing accurate specs. So don't worry your pretty, little heads about it," he said.

He's right though. The average gamer isn't going to know or care about what's under hood to the extent that the hardcore gamer does. Graphics definitely matter, but there's definitely a line of diminishing returns in terms of consumer interest within that department. The difference between the Wii U and Xbox One/Playstation is a completely different situation that the difference between the Xbox One and Playstation 4, and the average consumer is unlikely to really give a darn about the latter.

“The problem is that Sony decided to go out and publish a bunch of numbers, which are in some ways meaningless,” he said. “Because this isn’t like 1990, when it was 16-bit versus 32-bit.
Bits weren't the most significant then either, though that was more 64-bit was (far as I know) useless without more than 4 GB of RAM to use.

Anyways, I guess he has something of a point: there's only so much we can say for certain until the machines are out, we're seeing games, and systems are being ripped apart in more ways than one to check out the components.

“As a matter of fact, they actually go out and they talk about how proud they are about their off-the-shelf parts. Our guys’ll say, we touched every single component in the box and everything there is tweaked for optimum performance. For me, I’d rather not even have the conversation, because it’s not going to matter.

on top of all the magic we're going to add with the instant switching, and the power of the cloud.

This is incredible.

This is the consumer electronics business, the entire foundation of the industry is based upon spec sheets. Wanna buy a TV? contrast, resolution support spec sheets are readily view-able at kiosks. Same with any major smartphone. We are purchasing these gaming devices based upon their tech capabilities. Yes user experience plays a part, but you cant just try to sweep it under the rug by pretending its "meaningless".

Yes, people shouldn't compare competing products. In fact people shouldn't even know what the box they spend 500 fuckin dollars for actually has inside even if they wanted to.

I agree with him to an extent. Apple don't release numbers. They do '5x better' or whatever, but not really full breakdowns, and no one cares.

In the majority of cases he's right, it's pointless to compare; games are multiplatform and are made to the same fidelity. Atleast, that's been the case with 360/PS3 games, and will likely be the same. Typically I buy the game with better services attached, Xbox Live being a better service than PSN. However with the ease of development on these next gen consoles, and PSN enhancements, that might change.

First party titles will still look better on PS4 than first party titles on the Xbone.

Penello feels consumers will pick a console for the games it offers, rather than for its capabilities on paper.

Well, Microsoft, considering that the huge majority of both consoles' libraries will be the very same, I'm pretty sure most gamers will pick the one console that is cheaper and happens to be more powerful.

My goodness. These MSFT guys need to shut their mouths and stop talking in this manner.

Edit - Typo lol

Has Sony even talked about how the ps4 is more powerful than the XB1?

All I've heard from MS is the power of the cloud this and that. The only thing I can think of is Sony saying they weren't going to talk about power of the consoles, but let the games do the talking.

But yeah, sounds like loser talk.

So let's go out of our way to equate it all with magic and do absolutely the opposite of helping people better understand the precise merits of what they're buying.

Sorry, I choose not to endorse a philosophy of willful ignorance. On any grounds.

It's always curious this fan service is always via an Xbox approved magazine or site. MS know full well they can jive talk all day long without a hint of a retort like "About that GDDR5 RAM though..."

If it's so meaningless then why don't they stop bullshiting us with stuff like "the infinite power of the cloud"?
