Also sounds like they won't launch PS4 in Japan this year after all

'imo' that's smart. EU and Americas are much more important strategically. I think if the wiiu was selling better they would have gone a different route but as it is they can ride the ps3 along for a while longer in JP market

Where are you seeing this? They are launching in Brazil and India this year, so not being in Japan would be a conscious choice because of software availability rather than the old reason of not enough hardware. TGS is still to come and IIRC there is a separate event to introduce Japan to the PS4 as well. I mean, with the Xbone not arriving for a year, and stagnant home console sales, they could well wait, but it would be a first for a Japanese console to launch so much later in its home country than abroad.

Regarding the phones, is that the first quarter results since they released their first non Ericsson phone?

lol they would have sold well at launch no matter what Nintendo would have put out. Seriously doubt that's a concern. The primary focus should be in having as many units as possible for the launch months in Americas and EU

Btw only one of those are for a home console this year and even that is the 3d game iirc. Different markets and different target audiences

Well, I'm not exactly sure what you're saying (especially with the last sentence), but I think I agree, in principle. It makes more sense to focus on the US and EU this year since they have nothing appealing for Japan for launch (as announced now, TGS may change that). They may have sold well at launch week, but like Wii U, without software appealing to the home market, I think momentum would quickly fade. Western games will only get you so far.

That weak yen sure seems to be helping Sony a lot. Their smartphone and financial divisions were the only ones to see year-over-year sales growth on a constant currency basis.

Congrats Sony!

As far as I'm concerned this is only the beginning. Their mobile phones and tablets are getting a lot of attention and Honami is shaping up to be quite the best. Their digital imaging division is producing unique, class-leading products and I'm REALLY hopeful that those sensor/lens add-ons for cell phones really takes off. TV quality seems to be picking up greatly... their W900 series are fracking amazing, and the 4K sets even more so. PS4 is shaping up to have a monsterous launch.

I think we're witnessing the birth of Sony 2.0 :D

Damn... wish I had found a way to buy that Sony stock several months ago :(

Individual quarters are different to the full year's loss. Before we new Wii U's fate, people were panicking over the results around this time, iirc.
Notwithstanding that Sony's financials have been a mess for years; historically Nintendo do not post losses; they're also solely reliant on their game business.

Also Nintendo's operations on a quarterly basis haven't been strong for much longer than just prior to the Wii U's launch.
Code:
	Oper. Inc.
FY11Q1	-37712
FY11Q2	-19634
[B]FY11Q3	40938[/B]
FY11Q4	-20912
FY12Q1	-10331
FY12Q2	-18828
[B]FY12Q3	23302[/B]
FY12Q4	-30553
FY13Q1	-4924
Profitable quarters in bold.

Presumably the lack of shock also stems from the notion, right or wrong, that R&D and production costs for the PS4 are considerably higher than for the Wii U.

Of course, this is getting rather off topic.

Good job stepping it up with the mobile division. Xperia Z is a great phone.

I was expecting a larger loss on account of PS4 development, but I'm not analyst so what do I know? Vita numbers are depressing.

Sony are no longer a primary component manufacturer for TVs, their fixed costs are almost nil for production, and most of the assembly is in China except for their top end 4K TVs which have a huge profit margin anyway.

Getting out of manufacturing means Sony use almost the same business model as Vizio, but with a higher QC level. It also allows them to react to the market better, they don't have to keep producing LCD panels even if the market only demands half the amount, some other company (Sharp, Samsung, LG, AUO) bears that burden. It means Sony will never be massively profitable and they never really control their own destiny, but it also means they won't lose another $9bn trying and failing to make their own TVs.

Zomg how does this effect them when they move on to new display tech like OLD or Crystal .
Side note the really need to start getting there foot in the door for USA when it comes to smartphones .

huh. i will assume that is just odd wording, but maybe it makes sense if they just decided to give all the systems on the production line that would have gone to japan to europe and america instead. it might account for the high reservation numbers.

i don't think the ps4 will have too much of a problem finding its footing in japan, and they might bank on that theory as well. final fantasy xv and kingdom hearts 3 will come out for the machine, and that will be enough to get a decent userbase in the long run. i mean if the psp could be revived and if the vita could find life, then they could launch the ps4 later and do just fine.

I might definitely be reading too much into it but the way it was worded made me think it won't launch in Japan this year. I personally don't think they should either

Pokemon and MH are not releasing this christmas for the wiiu. PS4 like the wiiu is a home console, a separate market than the portable gaming market.

We basically know 5-6 of their exclusive titles for the first year of PS4 and we don't know what JP games they will have for year 1 and launch yet. Too early to jump to conclusions about a JP launch line up

Why is the operating income in the negative? All of the Playstations are profitable (not sure about the Vita) and they had strong software sales through out the year. My only guess is a lot of money that is going into PS4 development right now that is putting the games division in the red.

Sony Q1 Report said:
Sales were essentially flat year-on-year (a 15% decrease on a constant currency basis) at 117.9 billion yen (1,191 million U.S. dollars). This was primarily due to a decrease in unit sales ofPlayStation®3, PSP® (PlayStation Portable), and PlayStation®2 hardware, offset by the favorable impact of foreign exchange rates and increased software sales compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. The decrease in sales on a constant currency basis was primarily due to the above-mentioned decrease in hardware unit sales. Sales to external= customers decreased 7.2% year-on-year.

Operating loss increased 11.2 billion yen year-on-year to 14.8 billion yen (149 million U.S. dollars). This significant increase in loss was primarily due to an increase in research and development expenses related to the upcoming introduction of the PS4, and a benefit recorded in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year due to the reversal of a Blu-ray DiscTM patent royalty accrual.

Yup, PS4, it's right there in the report.

*sniff* the mention of CLED brings a tear to my eye. I REALLY REALLY want a CLED TV because as far as I can tell it has the potential to be the best display tech on the market. Sony's had about 1.5 years since they showed off that prototype. I wonder where their development is at in terms of producing it. Last we've heard, they were considering it for large scale displays, likely in the professional side of things. I guess that means they think it can be turned into a viable display tech, but it's extremely expensive to produce. A shame, really.

What bullshit they combine PSP/Vita and PS2/PS3 sales together.

Nintendo should combine 3DS and WiiU sales and play them at their own game.

So the PS2, in FY 2012, managed to sell more than the Wii U since its launch?

How...

(Kaz is not only a great face for Sony, but also the turnaround it needed. Good news indeed!)

Why do Sony continue to lump both PS2 and PS3 sales together? Just show us the PS3 sales dammit.

Well PS2 shipments have ceased, it mentions that in the slide, but last year it was to hide pitiful Vita sales. Honestly they need to serve investors better than that, but they've been told countless times and done nothing.

You mean combine wiiu and 'wii' ..not 3ds

Doing so still won't hide the fact how abysmal it's doing...vita+psp combo doesn't really hide it either so it's not that affective

About the PS3 sales I'm pretty sure Sony will make a PR when it reach 80 million milestone like they did with 70 million last November.

Because the western lineup has been shit. They are waiting for killzone and tearaway

Fair enough. I have to admit that I am a little blown away by how good killzone looks.

I do think a cut is overdue in the western markets. It won't ever hit DS levels in the west, but PSP levels are still possible.

No they aren't. Do you know how the psp actually performed in the west? It will be lucky to sell half of what the psp sold in the west worldwide

"Computer entertainment systems" is effectively just PS3 right now. Neither PS2 (in sales) nor PS4 (in forecast) are included.

Whether they'll end up lumping in PS4 later...
Unless Sony put a press release anytime soon, I doubt PS3 surpass 78.2m (360 shipment).
Why would anyone put out a press release about reaching 78.3M unit sales. Or 78.5M. Or 79M. Or 79.5M.

They still have new tech manufacturing, Sony are the only company in the world that makes and sells large OLED screen/monitors in significant quantities for example, and those are all made in house. They also have a 30" 4K OLED coming out in a few months for professionals which will be another industry first.

As for CLED, R&D is still on going, but as a technology it is just too expensive to bring to market, especially without the unlimited development budgets that Sony used to have. Really, it's up to the Japanese government to introduce tax credits and such for this kind of stuff before Sony (and other Japanese companies) invest money in to new and untested tech again like they used to.

I wish they were more forthcoming regarding their first party software sales. Why is it only Nintendo out of three manufacturers gives out LTD sales data for their software?
