Japanese newspaper rumor: redesigned Vita unveiling just before TGS

I hope that this is true, I know that SONY probably isn't doing anything regarding the memory cards but if we could use some form of SD card (micro?) in there I would buy it instantly.

But first and foremost the vita needs games!!!

This seems to be a common request but I find it hard to believe they'd ever add SD support. Would they just phase out the old memory cards and remove the slot? Or would they keep the slot for people who already bought them? Surely no-one else would buy the expensive memory cards anymore, so for all the future owners it'd be just a useless slot reminding of Sony's mistake.

Sucks that the rumor is probably fake, cause I'd buy the shit out of a Vita that has been optimized for remote play.

It's reported as a "rumor" to begin with, why people take it so seriously? However I think it's "Toyo Keizai" not "Tokyo Keizai", I've seen this posted in amaebi and 2ch forums.

So the Tokyo Keizai Shimbun doesn't exist, but the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, which is Nikkei, does. Now, I've never been to Japan but I'd think something like Nikkei's newspaper should be very easy to find and confirm facts.

The fact that this has only popped up on the-magicbox with no actual source, the fact that people in Japan are calling BS on this, and that all mentions of the rumor link back here tells me that this rumor is fake as hell. It's not happening.

Which matome/threads are you looking at? Toyo Keizai is mentioned as a possible mistake in some threads/comments but I haven't seen anyone come forward to confirm any such article in the publication, and it's not on the online version of the Toyo Keizai either. The amaebi post also just sources this neogaf thread.

The issue isn't whether it's rumor or news, it's that the original text that Magic Box translated doesn't seem to have ever been published in the first place.

I've been here reading of 3DSXL users that were enthusiast about how the games looked even more defined with the new screen... come on read all the opinions not just the one you need

A little hypocrisy much? Maybe you should follow your own advice with your original statement.

6.2" sounds like a superb companion for the PS4. Imagine playing PS4 games on that screen, downscaled from 1080p. IQ would probably be out of this world. I would buy one just for the ability of playing PS4 games whilst in bed. How awesome is that? So awesome.

I'm torn. I love my Vita and wouldn't want to abandon it after having it since Day One but having a larger screen with a bit more power inside is so tempting.

I think integrating a PS4 design scheme and throwing it in a box similar to the PS4 box would help the device immensely.

Vita XL?

Seems like it's designed for PS4 Remote Play. Is it actually bigger than the Wii U GamePad screen? That's crazy. I don't know if a more expensive Vita model is a good idea though. The thing isn't selling so you're going to release a more expensive model?

Well they say the new vita is gonnabe 6.2. The WiiU gamepad is 6 right now. So itll be only slightly bigger. Though it will beat the WiiU in terms of resolution since its 540p i believe whereas the Gamepad is only 480p. My only concern right now is if they'll be able to match the WiiU's streaming latency.

Bigger screen size was one of the things I most wanted. Yay!

Now Sony just give it a battery that lasts 20-30% longer than current Vita and a HDMI out.

16Gb internal memory + expandable via card slot .

Win.

So the question is do I trade in now or trade up later.

Meh on the hdmi out, I'd rather the ability to stream to Smart TV's/Apple TV/PS3/PS4. I want less cables not more.

I agree on the built in memory and standard expansion slots along with cheaper prices for memory.

Normally I keep my vita on my nyko speaker stand, I use if for watching netflix/hulu (where the hell is my Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle and proper DLNA support?). Picked it up after a long time of not playing and man is it heavy when comparing to my iPad Mini and Nexus 7.

I bet they'd call it the Vita Ultra to put it in line with the Xperia Z Ultra. I don't know if I can stomach that small a resolution anymore after being spoiled on 1080p screens on 5 inch screens.

The rumor was too dumb for it to be true.

Nobody was asking for a size increase, a more expensive redesign is unlikely to reignite sales.

They need a universal price cut across the board.

Yup. If this does happen, I hope they go all the way into making it a perfect PS4 companion device. Full-sized clickable sticks, a second set of analog triggers, bigger d-pad and face buttons... There's little reason for Sony to try and make the Vita into a traditional compact portable at this point.

Edit: :(

Just checked the site and item was removed because source could not be confirmed. This rumor was made up from the start, show's over folks.

That orrrrr Sony went all ninja and shut down the loose end :O

Anyways, despite the whole craziness to this rumor, after seeing Boxster17's mock up I was actually looking forward to the supposed redesign. Bigger screen, more RAM, bigger controls and buttons, maybe longer battery.....Now that i think bout it, it just seems to good to be slightly true.

They're making it bigger? Fuck that. Give me a tiny Vita with a bundled 8GB card for $200 and I'm in

Edit: Just saw this is fake as balls. Ignore me

Doh. I mean yeah, it would have been too big, carrying something bigger than the Wii U game pad around would be unwieldy, but the VIta seriously does need a redesign. The memory cards are universally reviled, and the ergonomics, particularly the sides, could use some re-engineering. Plus I'll bet the local remote play can be improved on, the Vita was designed too early to have PS4 streaming expressly in mind.

Well since the subject in the OP is dead, let's discuss something more important.

What's taking so long for them to spit out a Vita phone and Vita tablet? We have to be getting to the point where the Vitas internal guts can be stuffed into a modern smartphone shell.

Look at the newly launched Xperia Z Ultra as a perfect example. It's got the uber powerful S800 processor, 2 gigs of RAM, a 3000mAh battery and a 6.4" 1080p display, and it's just 6.5mm thick. Vita has a less advanced processor, 512 megs of RAM, 128 megs of VRAM, a 2200mAh battery, a 960xx544 screen, and it's 18.6mm thick.

Of course I won't deny that one is an EXTREMELY high end smartphone that commands a premium price, and the other is supposed to be a mainstream gaming device sold at a much lower price. Even still, it just shows how much they can stuff into a far thinner form factor if they put their minds to it. If they decided to build a Vita phone it could be extremely thin (compared to Vita itself), have a larger battery and would likely be quite popular. A Vita tablet could be amazing as well if they use the Xperia Tablet Z as a starting point at just 6.9mm thick.

I dunno... just hoping that such devices are being worked on over at Sony and that they'll see the light of day in the next year. Also, still hopeful they can one day dual boot Vita OS and Android. Make it happen Kaz! I believe in you! :)

I'm keeping my hopes up. I don't have a Vita yet but games like Gravity Rush (and mostly P4G) are looking mighty fine. Cheaper hardware with upgraded design is perhaps what I need to jump in. I'll probably own one anyway sooner or later but it'd be nice to get a reason to get one in the very near future.

RAM upgrade was the most plausible part of the whole thing. It happened to both the DS and the PSP last gen in the same exact way.

I thought that was freeing up RAM for devs to use, not increasing the RAM in the system itself, no?

Imagined so. The RAM upgrade seemed way too strange to be true.

Heh, changing of ram was the something that can be very easily done [and Sony already did it before with PSP console, it jumped from 32 to 64MB during PSP orig > PSP Slim transition].

As for Vita, entire system is inside single package. SoC is directly connected with 128MB of fast memory, and 2 dies of ram are connected to SoC via small "bridges". The only thing that Sony needs to do here is to use 512MB chips instead of 256MB.

Every other piece of the Japanese magazine rumor was strange [bigger screen], but increase of ram for better OS work was something I fully expect to happen one day.

Great. Hopefully it will bomba even worse so I can buy it for cheap.

Cheap is the only way I can justify buying a Vita thanks to memcard prices.

I hope gamestop runs the same promotion they did with the 3ds. Trade in the vitA, pay 100 extra and get the new model.

I would be all over that.

I would have preferred a slightly trimmed-down model than a bigger screen but it slightly concerns me that Sony might be trying to narrow the distance between the Vita and tablets.

Pursuing both the tablet market and the dedicated portable gaming one on two different systems with very differing hardware doesn't seem like a very good resource-unifying strategy to me, considering their "One Sony" initiative.

As for a replacement for the current model, given how many units are still on store shelves I wouldn't expect one very soon, though next year I think it will be more likely.

It would have to be dual boot... and no one will like that, at least on the phone where... ideally you would like to receive calls, then again you can already receive texts on the Vita OS.

How are they going to integrate controls? The biggest problem of adding controls to any kind of mobile or a tablet is how do you keep it ergonomic for both playing games and talking on the phone while not looking stupid (ie ngage). Xperia Play is kinda fine but it does make the device fatter and doesn't allow for analogue sticks. Of course they could make like any normal Xperia phone and it would come with the controller addon, ala that iOS thing.
