CVG: Microsoft to reveal 'major 3rd party game' comes free with X1 [MCV: FIFA 14]

Remember when GAF said Kinect would bomb and be a commercial failure for Microsoft?

GAF experts of business moves since 2010 ©.

while initially wrong I think ultimately GAF got that right. Most Kinects became paperweights for people after purchase. It never became very viable as a platform for games despite having 10-15 million units sold.

Yup.

Just had a small chat.

Main points.

Retail are going to be shellshocked tomorrow if it pans out like this, they have had no notice of anything like this. Losing one of their main SKUs for this year means they will be asking for a larger trade discount on XB1 according to him to make up for lost revenue. He also says that they will still use the PS3/360/PS4 version as a loss leader in the first week of sale.

good point. how many millions in revenue is retail gonna lose by not selling FIFA separately?

oh MS, one step forward, 2 steps back.

I'm not in retail, but it seems to me it would benefit retailers to put huge PS4+FIFA signs for £389(£40 for fifa) right next to the XB1 displays, would this be a tactic to expect if this is true?

This thread is certainly going places...

Interesting. Thanks for sharing some insight. :)

24 Million units.

And yes, GAF was very wrong, but that's besides the point.

The hardcore FIFA players in Europe have been on PlayStation since forever, and Kinect isn't going to push them over the edge here. It's still cheaper for them to buy a PS4+FIFA.

I'm sure it will win some people over, but not enough to totally take over.

Now, if FIFA was exclusive...
it isn't.

If playing catch up and acting in desperation makes the Xbox One more appealing to the consumer, it is a good thing.
Yeah I suppose, didn't matter to me though since I already decided ps4 is a better choice.

And this means what? As I said, these are for-profit entities that care about nothing more than getting in the black. It just so happens that they made a more consumer-friendly change in policy. What is the problem here? The fact of the matter is that you clearly have it out for MS and you are a staunch Sony fan. Drop the brand loyalty and be objective about this. Nearly every major complaint we had, MS has rectified. I do not see how this is a negative whatsoever.
There is no problem, its just funny to me how desperate they look, maybe if you weren't such a ms fanboy you would find the funny too?

EU retailers will be praying that this is only for "day one" consoles. Also, MS will most surely offer digital download for Fifa14, no chance of re-selling it to the retailer...

Not if people realize they can get the PS4 w/FIFA 14 for cheaper than Xbone with a packed in version. You'd be surprised how rational people can be.

You'd be surprised how led my marketing hype people can be. If MS market the hell out of it, the Xbox One will be the version people HAVE to buy. Worked with CoD and its early DLC stuff. Maybe they could just swing something as drastic for Fifa.

True but I suspect people will weight price first.

This is speaking ahead of the game when we still have Sony/MSFT news coming in the next few days.

Pffft. Sony should pack in a bluray of The Fisher King.

too subtle?
I actually got sent a bluray for signing up for PSN in the UK just after launch

It was Casino Royale

No it couldn't.
If it were a full exclusive, yes. A bundle? No.

Yes it could. If it's bundled with every xbone then it becomes the defacto Fifa machine, and the CoD exclusivity for DLC will make it the CoD machine too. With the only 2 games that matter in the UK being on either every xbone or with better dlc support, then it'll won the UK.

Also, why wouldn't they make it titanfall? It'd be a guaranteed way to get the title played and establish it as an exclusive. Then it'll have the 100% attach rate that'll sure interest in the sequel.

Yes - and in Supermarkets I'd imagine. It's all about margin for us.

The point (which frankly might have gone over your head) was that breaking entire business decisions, studio closure, and licensing agreements down to snarky one sentence statements is disingenuous and that makes any and all companies look bad. And if someone talks down to one company using those metrics, they're shaming the very company they champion themselves.

OF COURSE there is nuance and context to be considered with any studio closure, and exchange of money, any exclusive arrangement, and studio development. Microsoft and Sony have both paid handsomely for exclusive content and exclusive licenses. Microsoft and Sony have both had to close studios due to unsuccessful IPs or mismangement, even if the studio was talented. Microsoft and Sony are both doing their best to cultivate great teams and building up their studios.

It was the hypocrisy of those statements that I was pointing out. I know you feel slighted that I could paint Sony in a negative light, but that was not the intent. The intent was that its foolish to paint any one company in a negative light using snarky biased statements.

See this is the sad irony of this whole conversation..you are doing EXACTLY what they are doing..just with more words.

Basically some posters use snarky one liners to downplay the situation without any context. You just use an essay to do it. Still bad but takes longer to read it. Hope you catch that point before it goes over your head.

You are being just as disingenuous as those posters and don't kid yourself thinking otherwise. Your whole post was about focusing on one aspect of the information and ignoring everything else. So yes you are also a hypocrite

Now about your last paragraph. I feel 'slighted'? Man have you seen my comments about vita and sony execs? Don't be an idiot and just jump to conclusions. Those posts makes your post look like a love letter to sony. I only care about myself. And I have no trouble whatsoever giving credit where it's due and I have done so for Sony/MS/Nintendo. But it's quite telling that you actually felt the need to type that tho...reflects on you rather well and what your intentions were. Not everything has to be a fanboy war

I just don't understand the need to post at all?

If Sony announce that they will include a copy of Killzone Shadowfall with the PS4, do you think it's okay to go into that thread and say 'Peggle is better than this shit'?

It's the internet man. I know his tone was extreme but that's how some people type. And yes I can definitely see some saying something similar (well maybe not with Peggle like extreme example...well I dunno, some do hate the KZ franchise lol)

Microsoft offers free pack in game:

"Reeks of Desperation"
"Panic mode!"
"It doesn't change anything"

Sony offers free pack in game:

"I LOVE YOU SONY"
"Wow Sony is really generous"
"GAMECHANGER"
Wondering if mods still sending MPs when more and more people are getting annoyed by this trend in gaf. And how many people already stopped reading gaf because of this.

Exactly. This is really has developed into a Sony circle-jerk. Its sad that consumers feel any brand-loyalty IMO. Neither of these companies care about anything other than profitability. Period. Sony is not some white-knight here, and neither is MS. What is sad to me is just how virulent these pro-Sony fanboys are. They literally take ANY announcement, and spin it to make MS look bad. We are talking about a free game pack-in, and somehow this is being spun as a negative? I really hate the direction that the console audience has gone. If you dislike the X1, don't buy it. If you dislike the PS4, don't buy it. Simple as that. Stop trying to tear down something you have no interest in. And don't engage in a debate/argument if you have no interest in opening your mind to competing opinions.

If you don't like how this forum is, PM the mods. Enough of this "wah wah stop picking on me." It infests every thread from multiple people.

People who want Kinect as well?...

Kinda obvious.

Also to keep people from jumping over to Sony. I'm a 360 only guy this gen but am considering jumping ship even though I am neck deep in the Xbox Live ecosystem. If I gave a shit about FIFA and lived in Europe this might make me stay with MS. It certainly brings the value of the two consoles closer together.

Wow, MS didn't even consult retailers AT ALL before making this deal? That is absolutely insane and truly incompetent if true. Add that to the game likely selling for £25 in week one as the case has been for the past few years and this deal looks less and less beneficial for MS.

But buying a PS4 + FIFA is still cheaper right? Is this just people think, "Hey for $40 more I get a motion tracking camera?" and that's supposed to make people choose Xbox over PlayStation?

Everyone i know that has one and never uses it, or how every industry persons says it is in their closet. Didn't mean to imply it was breaking rather rarely anyone uses it.

For the record I see the Move in the same light. It sold over 10 million units, but there is no way I consider that a successful platform for games either.

Not a surprise, weren't third parties clueless about their drm policies too?

Price will be the main selling point in Europe, if we look in what kind of financial situation are we in Eurozone.

Retailers will be pissed as hell tomorrow. Need to page my good friend who works in Mediamarkt, how happy will they be :D

Depends how pissed off they are about this whole thing, and what MS is doing to 'make up for loss sale.'

If MS offers a very compelling trade discount/package, then retail wouldn't mind so much. Might still be pissed off though, since this obviously came out of nowhere and spoils the market in a way.

If MS isn't offering a trade package to support this deal, then MS is asking to be the 'retail public enemy no.1 in Europe.'

Not a surprise, weren't third parties clueless about their drm policies too?

2 different animals.

DRM policies doesn't affect the game making, publishing and sales/marketing process. On the other hand, something like this can massively affect a retailer's stockholding, inventory, sales, etc.

well you have some interesting XB1 promos here in EU, for example you get a 2nd official controller free with XB1 in Mediamarkt retail stores here in Spain, so 500€ for XB1 + 2nd controller + FIFA 14 is awesome

Well I'll make clear that it's just one buyer saying that his retailer wasn't consulted. MS may have consulted with others, but given the scale of the retailer in question IMO if they haven't been invited to the table then no one has.

If they announced a lower price and/or drop kinect, no one would try to spin that into a negative. They are getting all the flack they deserve.

Thanks for taking a small bit of my post and harping on it. Really shows your objectivity.

Again, I am NO fanboy, but I really am discouraged to see the negative reactions to the changes MS has made since E3. We all voiced our opinions and policies were changed to reflect that. What is the problem here? I am so sick of fanboys on both sides here. Grow up, these are corporations that want your money. They want to get every penny from your pocket possible. None of them are the "good-guy" here. Make your decision, and deal with it. If you dislike the X1 then don't buy it. If you dislike the PS4, then don't buy it. It is simple; consumers talk with their wallets and nothing more. Make a huge deal on Gaf all you want, nothing you say will dissuade the guy buying an X1 and visa versa.

And honestly, I disagree with you. Because had MS price dropped the X1, you would have people here saying that they "caved" and giving them crap for it. Just as they did when the DRM policies were changed. A fanboy is a fanboy, no matter what news may be presented to them.
