Adam Sessler & Albert Penello on the Xbox One (Interview)

It also has an air of truth to it. He has consistently cited PS+ (and now the camera) in the price of PS4 in order to compare it with the Xbox one, meanwhile not citing XBL in the comparison. He claimed that Sony was withholding information about their no drm policy while in the same breath defending the Xbox one DRM. He feigns ignorance about Hardware specs, while in an earlier video expressing concern over the way PS4 allocates its ram. Among other things that you should know if you do watch his videos on a consistent basis.

The guy is completely disingenuous, and anyone who has watched his videos can pick out the points where his bias lays.

I noticed all of that off that bat.

I used to think it was a misguided attempt at being impartial, but there is a strong skew in favor of MS, the first and last "Sessler says" I've ever seen was him pretty much making sure anyone with a positive opinion of PS4 questioned their positive opinion and planted some seed of something worse down the line coming from sony, and anyone with a positive opinion of MS was smart for looking at the big picture.. I won't call him a shill, i respect his view on too many other things, but anyone calling him impartial is a laughable judge.

OP - for future reference, it would be cool if you included who the hell Albert Penello was.

Site is blocked at my work so I have no idea who this guy is or why I should care. I'm assuming he works for Microsoft, but we all know what happens when one makes assumptions...

I have asked him for this on his twitter page, but didn't get a response. Yes, everyone has seen the "tech demos" but the public hasn't gotten to see an up to date build of the dashboard. We need to see what it actually is going to be like on day one.

They don't have a near final build of the OS running just yet and probably won't until October so they haven't shown it publicly. When they switch in and out of different sections there's just a green or grey screen flashing up.

You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofHr3jmQWdg

Presumably he means the Xbox One is the more refined product, equivalent to a well balanced 400bhp Porsche?

It is getting slightly annoying how MS are attempting to portray their system as the more sophisticated console, they also talk about Kinect and "snap", as if they are mind blowing, must have, features.........

Taking into account everything I've seen and read, the PS4 is the more refined console, it also packs more power to boot (how much more is arguable). PS4's UI appears slick and intuitive, instant play, sharing etc. look to be genuinely useful features. The media side is covered with forward looking services like Netflix and the rumoured cable streaming, meanwhile the Xbox One is tethering you to antiquated cable boxes in an era when cutting the cord is gathering steam.

No 400hp Porsche is faster than a 700hp Corvette...that is a ridiculous analogy.

Given the architectural similarities, a more apt comparison would be between a 300HP Porsche and a 400HP Porsche. We have no reason to believe the Xbox One is any "faster in the corners", if you take my meaning.

No its not? What he is saying is that its about the architecture not the the raw numbers. Witch is true. The Xbox One has a weaker GPU but they also have 15 specialized processors to complete task and take the load off the GPU CPU (The CPU is faster then PS4 ATM) freeing them up for other things.

The PS4 has a bunch of the same "specialized processors" to take load off the system, too. Some of the processors MS is counting are only there to do things the PS4 never needs to have done (namely shuffling data between the ESRAM and DDR3 in the Xbox One). As such those "15 specialized processors" do not necessarily confer any advantage at all.

But that's a good thing. Ryse has massive potential based on its theme and Roman lore. Just need to get a competent dev behind it and it could be really good. Under Crytek it's all style (sort of) and hardly any substance.

Ryse 2 developed by Ninja Theory would be my ideal scenario.

Well you could Google him doesn't take very long, a few seconds

Want your arse wiping for you too or your nose picked?

Man, threads like this are really bringing out people's Biases these days. Some are just so blindly blatant.

Reminds me of a forum at another site with the initials "SW" :p

First tragedy, then farce.
It's nice to talk about OS as well but stop showing it behind closed doors. Sony showed theirs live in front of a big audience. Of course they didn't get into all of it but we've seen some of the PS4 OS.

Microsoft showed their OS off at the unveiling and was pounced on for it.

That was a really good interview. Albert should be the go to spokesperson for MS. They need to drop that clown Major Nelson.

Hilarious thing is Albert is an engineer! He isn't supposed to be a PR mouthpiece.

Microsoft showed their OS off at the unveiling and was pounced on for it.

Sony booted theirs up and showed Shu watching a game and then jumping in. Contrast that with what MS showed. There's a reason they were shit on for it.

Agreed Major Nelson was one of the main reasons I haven't ordered the XB1 and will wait till perhaps the end of next year to see how it lies in the market place.

But that's because it was all pre recorded and the actual thing at the time ran considerably worse. How it will actually run at launch remains to be seen.

Err..not to the extent of what it can become.
Well, no, not while they've been keeping some releases off digital. That's all they had to do. That, and offer a decent value prop with the digital release given the tradeoff in terms of resale.

The engineers speaking out seems to be the way to go. Just look at what a breath of fresh air Cerny has been as a mouthpiece for Sony. Albert needs to be the same thing for MS.

Nelson makes me annoyed before he even says anything.

That's a little harsh

In my profession we call people clowns that aren't good at their jobs. Nelson is constantly inaccurate and has been show to be completely unreliable when asked to give a hard fact on anything. I am buying a Xbox One despite him.

He is a clown.

Yeah but journalists have seen real demos and I don't think I've read a negative or doubtful impression of it yet.

And if MS goes on stage and shows anything or talks about anything other than GAMES GAMES GAMES they will be tarred and feathered, so now we get very few details about anything other than GAMES GAMES GAMES.

I don't think this applies to Sessler in issollation, US games journalism in general seems to go easy on MS.

Rev3, Weekend Confirmed, IGN, amongst others, all mocked gamers when they where outraged about DRM. The week after E3, Weekend Confirmed didn't even touch on the DRM differences, likewise IGN's Xbox podcast had one participant bringing up his concerns, while the host was attempting to quickly move things on.

Meanwhile, over on this side of the pond, Eurogamer, CVG, Edge, IGN UK and a whole host of mainland European sites where quite rightly talking about this, and little else. Perhaps MS are just so ingrained in the consciousness of the US public, US outlets struggle to be impartial.

I look forward to the consoles launching, then we can get back to regular games discussion, in the meantime, it would be cool in Rev3Games etc., had more Sony representation on their shows.

Sony really hasn't been putting themselves out there to be talked to, mostly due to that the only details left (outside of hopefully a certain surprise at TGS) being the exact hardware specs and some OS features. Their message has been clear and are likely just sitting back with a ton of confidence as preorder numbers pile up in their court. When you don't hear anything new (they mentioned a bunch of indie games, which was covered and applauded), what is there to cover?

Microsoft has been more available because they still have a message (whatever the hell it is, nobody including them still don't have a clue) that they are trying to get across and are trying to make up for lost ground from their initial policy reveal. The more someone is out there, the more coverage they are going to get. And right now, Xbox One news is the hot topic everyone is interested in, either to see improvement or to see another spill. It's the only one out of the two that we're actually getting news about as they try to repair their stance.

I also don't quite remember gamers being mocked for being angry at the policies, but rather mocked because that has been the increasingly common face of the community the past couple of years.

Where did you get that idea? He is a PM with a Marketing background

He said he worked on the engineering team. I guess I made an assumption. My bad.

Neither Sony nor MS have been very good at showing their OS.

I came to post that. I think he looking at the 911 Carrera S[400 hp] vs zr1 2014 that rumor to be 700hp.

I would take the zr1 all day long..... It would walk all over it, track or drag strip.

Good lord. One of the great things about GAF is that many developers post here. Everything you're saying could apply to any of them. You can have a cynical attitude but accusations like this are unwarranted IMO.

Accusation? dude is doing marketing for MS. That means part of his job is to selling to people, which includes gaf. Or did you actually think he was posting here because he likes hanging out on gaf?

This. We see it again and again, MS could put out the actual OG XBox in a new case and spin it the same way, and U.S. journalists would eat it up like candy.

"Yeah, this is 13 years old, but whatever right, specs, pfft."

Polygon/IGN/Rev3: "Yeah, baby, get that shit!"

nib already answered this. It speaks for itself since we haven't seen it since.

There's a time fore everything. Sony have handled their things far different and it shows. Their Gamescom opener was great. That whole presser was packed with games.

I wasn't referring to specs there, more the situation of consumer trust and pricing. He goes out of his way to downplay the DRM (In a previous video) and to artificially raise the price of a PS4 purchase in the name of feature parity while at the same time not including Xbox Live in the equation.(In previous videos, and as recently as this video). Sorry for not clarifying.

I didn't see the video, but if he included PS+ cost without including XBL cost in the debate, that is obviously unfair. Cost should essentially be beyond debate. You can go on forever debating value, but the X1 will cost more regardless. In my opinion, both companies have had issues with "trust". I gave Sony a lot of crap when, during the PS3 launch period, I was told that I didn't want rumble anymore. Sony has definitely been better with their message for this coming gen. I'm not ready to throw MS under the bus yet even though some of their PR people seem to be beyond help. I'm a sucker for second chances.

What Sessler still doesn't understand the hardware difference....come on man.

Yeah I love Sessler, but how do all these journalists not know this stuff? Every major site or publication either didn't know the difference in specs, or refused to talk about it when highlighting the differences in systems. Most sites/journalists would have their audience believe both systems are the same spec wise.

Anyways, this Microsoft guy seems awesome. They should use him more often.

I don't believe the difference between these systems will be as significant as comparing individual components. How is it that a 400 HP Porsche can be faster than a 700 HP Corvette?" -- Overall it's balance and trade offs and it'll come down to the games.

What in the hell?

And Sessler is overwhelmingly "dumb" when it comes to comparing the systems. I am sick and tired of people thinking he is hard hitting. It has been as clear as damn day since E3.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Accusation? dude is doing marketing for MS. That means part of his job is to selling to people, which includes gaf. Or did you actually think he was posting here because he likes hanging out on gaf?

He's not in the marketing dept. He's on here answering questions which is a good thing. He may also like hanging out on GAF, a lot of developers do. Do you call all of them out when they answer questions about games they're working on?

And yes, it's an accusation when type garbage like "it is disingenuous because he is being paid to manipulate the collective perception of things". That's hyperbole of the highest degree.

But since the Xbox is bigger and heavier, wouldn't it be Xbox is a 300HP Corvette while PS4 is a 400HP Porsche?

(Kidding)

Why would he ask Sony anything? What is there to ask them about?
Here are a few things I've seen people curious about on GAF.

Lack Gaiki support in Europe
Amount of resources allocated to games/reserved for OS
Retail PS4 as a debug console
Multitasking capabilities
Turning off the DS4 light bar (lol :p)
What game audio is going through controller to headset, just sound effects from controller speakers or what?
Dedicated servers for third party games (like COD)
Extent of integration of Eye into OS

Many questions actually:
Any more detail about Gaikai?
How do you feel about having less AAA games than XB1?
...

The X1 does seem to get more coverage. Probably a side effect of all the controversy and hubbub surrounding it. If MS can start to get their message straight, they'll be happy to have the attention.

Dude is a marketer, not a developer. He gets paid to market. Marketing is manipulating perceptions of people in order to get them to buy things.

Wow, some Sony butthurt is in the house ! I can see why some say Sessler is a Microsoft lover because for many times he defends the brand with weak arguments but to say he's a shill is going a bit far. I love Sessler, i think he does a great job and unlike many fanboys, he doesn't view videogames in one side.

I think the interview was great, i want to buy an Xbox One, the system will be great no doubt, not sure about day one yet though... gimme a free game like the Europeans and i'm down !!!

I think you need to realise though Albert is paid to market a product, and like most "sales people" he is not going to highlight any negatives , so as a sales person you are there to manipulate the consumer/customer.....its what sales is about.

Its naïve to think Albert is on here out of the goodness of his heart and to educate us gamers, you have seen MS opinion on gamers that we are largely stupid and we don't know what we want.

Albert is here to add positivity to the damage that has been done to the Xbox brand, Sony would be doing the same thing if they had to
