Ars Technica Review -- No score, but some technical notes on the first page.

Sounds bad - and likely to be true. Lots of people here are saying it's "fine", but most GAF users have low standards when it comes to these technical things.

I know I'm going to love the game, at this point it's a question of how much technical failings I'll have to try and ignore. At least until the PC version!

WTF is up with everybody getting all up on their high horse about how women are depicted in games?

It's a fucking video game! It's fiction! It's entertainment! I know this is a hot item, but it seems some outlets are really focussing on that issue alone.

I won't talk about the issue itself, because I'm in no need for a shitstorm, but damn it get's on my nerves! And it's all the more apparent in these GTA V reviews.

Looks like 360 critics are a bit more lenient:

Differents websites, in a few hours both will have the same score I believe (never seen a better score for 360 or PS3 version)

People need to stop using this logic 'cause it does not apply to every developer. Rockstar is the valedictorian of the gaming industry and this generation, and scores like this definitely don't look well on their transcript. A 3.5 out of 5 might be good for C average developers, but not Rockstar.

Well, at least they praise the gameplay to high-heaven, it's the script they have issues with. For me, one is more important than the other. Even though I might not have issues with the script, who knows? I like to make up my own mind.

As for Rockstar, if they average 99%, they don't have much to worry about, do they?

At least on the PlayStation 3 version I tried, though the price for all this beauty is paid in framerate dips, messy anti-aliasing, ridiculous texture pop-in, and a reduction from the box's advertised "720p" resolution.

oh, for fuck's sake.

i might not get this.

I know people were probably joking about "that one site who is gonna give a 7 for clicks"

Still, that escapist review was written by Greg Tito. The person who gave Dragon Age II a 10/10

I don't know, man

Dragon Age 2 a 10 and he still has a job?

Read the Giantbomb review if you want the best of the worst the game has to offer.
I always like Jeff reviews. It's a 5/5 both the review is mostly focused on issue, mistakes and things and aren't great. It's a good read.

Just finished Sterling's video review. Good stuff, he likes Trevor.

Trevor will be awesome, but it's Michael I'm most looking forward to. Now for GameTrailers, and then I will take a peek at that Escapist travesty.

No info on 360 version?

I'm basing this on what I heard from people streaming it this weekend, but there were some reports of OG 360's freezing & locking up in cutscenes. Graphically, both look the same but performance may come down to how old your hardware is.

Aliasing, pop-ins, etc exist on both versions according to people who were streaming.

A new version of the game on next-gen consoles or the PC would no doubt fix these issues and really set mouths drooling. As it is, Rockstar should be commended for duct-taping this mix of details and sacrifices while keeping the framerate tolerable and the glitch count to a minimum.

That's odd. I haven't noticed a single drop in 14 hours of gameplay on my PS3. I'm usually sensitive to that kind of thing. It's been a solid 25fps all the way through.

There hasn't been a single instance of screen tearing either.

I am more frustrated by people complaining about the many F-words etc in GTA. It's like they've never played GTA before.

Wait for next gen/PC with me, bro! STAY STRONG.

Either that 3.5/5 or 7/10 is accurate or someone wanted hits.
I've never really bought into a reviewer tanking a review for hits. I mean maybe it's happened, but that seems really weird.

As for it being accurate, well sure. It's their opinion. Basically impossible for it to inaccurate.

That review sort of reminds me of Breaking Bad. My wife stopped watching because it was difficult to watch. She didn't want to root for anyone, nobody on the show is "clean". Whereas I find it fascinating and can't get enough of it.

Neither reaction is wrong. And really, Escapist's comments make me even more interested in the story now. Would be much worse if all they felt after playing the game was indifference.

Well, Tommy Vercetti and the Boss from Saints Row 2 are some of my favourite protagonists because of how villainous they are. The pussification of the Saints Row MC and the push towards more likeable protagonists in Rockstar's last few games makes this a welcome change for me.

Nice to see so many perfect scores. It was granted though. Can't wait till tomorrow.
I've never seen that 7.5 gif before. I bursted out in laughter so hard when I scrolled down to the bottom. Thanks OP, this made my day.

Yeeeah people you can feel ok about "pretending that review doesn't exist" as some of the other media people in here are saying. It's not getting up in arms about a lower review, it's about ignoring someone who doesn't know what the hell they're talking about in games. That dragon age 2 review was a fucking joke that, at the time, felt like it was being paid off.

"solid 25fps"

Depressing... I understand the hardware limitations, but playing such a gimped version of this first time is a hard pill to swallow.

So Polygon gives this 9.5 when TLOU only gets 7.5? Ok....

The graphics do suck in GTA V, but that is due to the technical limitations of the PS3/Xbox 360 for open world games. It will be utterly amazing on the inevitable PC edition (unless that anti-PC petition goes through, lol).

The does nothing new but thats ok thing 10 anyway kind of gets on my nerves. People hated on 4 so I can only imagine the same will happen in a few months with 5 if the reviews are anything to go by.

Escapist's review is a perfectly legitimate take on the game.

That has zero value to anyone even remotely considering buying the game. Which, is... I mean it's fair enough. We know some people won't like it for the reasons in that review. As critique it has value, but... very very little. Because that critique isn't any more particularly interesting now than it was when Grand Theft Auto original came out.

Yup. A story about crime will have characters some people can't get behind. I've heard the same comments made about shows like breaking bad, boardwalk empire, even the wire to some extent.

I don't particularly like when the gender dynamics lens is over-applied in criticizing a work (and I haven't read any of these reviews, so I'm not even saying it has been in this case), but it's really stupid to say (or believe) that portrayals in entertainment don't affect the world in important ways just because it's not real.
