According to Kantar Worldpanel , Windows Phone has now hit 9.2 percent share in those key European countries, up from just 5.1 percent share last year.

competition is good. the lumia 520 is now the best selling windows device, period. that thing is crazy cheap and the consistent WP8 experience across devices is what will win the platform marketshare. switched to an 8X recently and i love the thing.

I have a friend in Germany that switched to Windows Phone this year. I thought she was crazy at the time, but she told me it is very popular over there.

My wife and I both have the 520/521 now and really like it. Prepaid has always been the best for us.

I'm really happy for Windows Phone. Most slick phone I ever had.

WTF at HTC's backslide. I am starting to feel bad for them.

I remember the Windows Mobile -> Android Betrayalton and swore to never buy an HTC or Android. (I have a Galaxy now)

I guess our people won't buy anything that would help the enemies of the Great Confederate Empire of Europe (GCEE for short). I appreciate of this europeism.

Italian and 620 owner btw, pretty happy with it.

Lumia 525 is going to be a big deal then. Loving my 920, will either keep until next year's Pureview flagship or get the upcoming phablet.

My wife, brother, sister-in-law and mother-in law all have WP's. Stopped being a niche device here in England a good number of months ago now.

Probably caused by Nokia desperately paddle out 79.99 Lumia 5xx haha.

Also BB going out of business.

now what can MS/Nokia do in the US to gain marketshare? 520/521 isn't having as large of an impact here. people would still rather pay more for an older Galaxy S2/S3 or a budget Android.

Thread is being ignored by Android/iOS gaf.

Anyway, thanks Euro-gaf! You'll still stick with Lumia now that MS is going to start making them right?

Nice to see marketshare growing, especially here in the UK. Glad to see it in double digits. Hopefully people who are buying the 520 are impressed enough with it to want to upgrade down the line to more premium models with a much higher average selling price.

I think this is the most positive WP thread+comments I've ever seen.

It won't last.

820 for 250€ and 520 for 150€, you bet they sale. Crazy prices for the experience offered.

You can get a 920 for £200 here now, pretty tempting.

Interesting. To what can we attribute this success, relative to other regions? I tend to think of the US as Microsoft's primary success market, but perhaps they're simply being suffocated by iOS there (Apple's primary market is also the US).

Hey, I'm one of them !
Germany seems to have its own dynamics, but in most other countries, it looks like MS mostly benefited from the fall of BlackBerry. It's a bit sad, I had a BB not too long ago (before switching to Android and then WP8), and rather liked it. I especially love physical keyboards, that's the main thing bothering me right now with WP8.

Now you dun it.

Good news to see. Crazy how much Android dominates in some markets. Hopefully with better spread of devices on carriers WP will gain more traction in the US. Tough market though. 2014 is going to be an interesting year for WP.

I was going to say price as the Lumia 520 is a bit of a bargain here in the UK but the 520/521 has been on sale in the US at $80 on PAYG a good few times so it can't be that.

I wonder if it's just lack of awareness of just how good the budget devices are from Nokia.

WP will be caught up in the specs race by that stage so that'll be one less negative against it. Interesting to see how the 1520 performs when it launches in November or so.

I've been on the verge of buying a 620 or 920 for a while now. I'm hanging on until the October event to see what they announce there before parting with any cash.

It'll likely just be the 1520 and some lower end stuff like the rumoured Lumia 525. Nothing out there suggesting a 92x successor yet, I wonder if they're waiting for 8.1 to launch that.

There are a lot of ads for the 1020 in the US, but that it is super expensive and only available on AT&T so far. That's probably the main hurdle. AT&T is the only carrier that gets the flagship product when it is new and is competitive with the latest Apple and Samsung flagships. When the 920 versions for Verizon, TMobile, and, Sprint, came out, those carriers were a few months away from getting the S4 and now they have the 5s.

On a side note, I'm interested to see if Google's Moto X phones made here can take some marketshare from Samsung.

Good to hear. Loved my time with WP and will probably up back some day. Hopefully dev support picks up and we get some parity in what will probably be the 3 major ecosystems going forward.

Microsoft supported older devices much better in Europe. More phones that started with WP 7.0 got updated to 7.8. I'm not sure if any were updated through official means in North America.

Nokia is extremely strong brand in Europe. In USA it's petite. Even when they ruled the whole mobile market it was still weak in Europe.

Second...Lumia 520. Incredibly cheap solid phone.

Plus there's a lot of app support for WP in Europe. A lot more than in USA.

It's weird for me. I had a Windows phone for a while, and it was great. App support sucks, sure, but I hate using apps all together.

Give me a good, snappy browser and I'm happy.

Damn, Android's big in Spain.

Almost bought a Lumia 520 myself, they seem nice little devices. Good price/value ratio.

Companies stopped subsidising handsets to compete on rates.

As a result high end phones took a hit - android wide price range is clearly winning here. Huawei is becoming big here for this reason.

I'm going to play it safe and wait a few weeks. The 920 was £200 on Amazon and Tesco at the weekend and I probably should have pulled the trigger - I doubt it'll get much cheaper than that.

I almost bought a red one when it was that price but I too want to wait off and see what the 1520 is like, as well as the Nexus 5 if I fancy a chance from WP.

For the same 100$, you can get a iPhone 5 and the 920 (approx., replace [Flagship] with [Flagship]) on contract. What propels a consumer to buy the relatively unknown 920 or 1020 over the known quantity iPhone or Galaxy, especially when you've heard from friends that WP has no apps? At the carrier stores, you had reps actively talk badly about WP because kickbacks are higher when someone buys android/iOS kickbacks or because they owned WindowsMobile phone 5-6 years ago and the first iPhone was better? WP8 brought the OS at least to a 'known quantity' in the US, whereas before if you brought it up most people wouldn't even know what you're talking about.

In Europe there is a lot less reliance on carrier subsidies, so the pricing of the iPhone relative to WP is a much better value proposition. 100$ for lumia 520/150$ for HTC8S/450$ for lumia 920/5 as opposed to 400$ for iPhone 4S/600$ + for iPhone 5.

I got a Lumia 520 and it's a pretty good phone. Windows Phone 8 is pretty neat. I do miss some of the features that Android offers, mainly customization, but overall, I really like everything about the OS.
