Yeah, not a surprise the ESRAM is going to be a problem at launch, especially for multiplatform titles. Remember, last time around the 360 was the lead platform for basically every multiplatform game. This time, its the PC. Porting from the PC to the PS4 sounds like its a trivial process, but porting to the Xbox One is considerably less so.Thing will get better for sure, but at the end of the day, the best they can hope for is parity with memory performance. The GPU advantage will always be there.

All this news about PS4 being 1080p for different multi-plats and not being gimped makes me really happy. I was wrong about devs doing it intentionally and I am glad I was wrong. Thank you devs.

It's been leaked/confirmed by famousmortimer on here but not by DICE yet

Only thing I remember was some article where somebody @ DICE was saying it would be "cowardice" not to max out each SKU to take advantage each platform's strengths. That to said, "there will be non-trivial differences." I guess this is one of the possible differences.

mortimer is on a roll...and not the type of guy that takes his reputation lightly, especially because he doesnt hide behind a keyboard...

if he is confident...i believe it...

Yeah I remember that article and it alludes to difference between versions

Here are morts comments on it

I don't know what the Xbox One resolution of BF4 is... but if it isn't 1080p it's not going to be the same as the ps4 version - or so I hear.

About BF4... DICE doesn't fuck around with hardware. They are serious about tech. They wouldn't hamstring a game and....

Again, I don't have the slightest clue what BF4 is like on the xbox one. But I am confident about the two statements above. The whole "forced parity" thing has been paranoia from the start.

So it's not absolute confirmation by any means but I think it's likely at this point

I guess 900p on PS4 would be possible

Also, does anyone know if the ESram was planned from the start or if they implemented that AFTER the PS4 GDDR5 announcement?

definitely before the PS4 GDDR5 announcement...MS would have known the 68gb/sec of the DDR3 would have been a bottleneck (remember, the rumors all along were that the PS4 was set to use GDDR5, just less of it)...so they would have been looking at ways to increase bandwidth...

Also remember, that even Sony explored the idea of embedded RAM...Cerny said they had a design on the table that would have followed MS' formula very closely...

a narrower bus for main memory (dropping the GDDR5 from 176gb/sec to 88gb/sec)...but they had on die EDRAM at 1TB/sec (!!)...they even said it would be easier to manufacture this hardware...but that it would be more complicated to develop for...so they went with a wider bus for main memory....

the "responses" to the PS4 announcement are the CPU/GPU upclocks...

Great news. Not so much for Microsoft though if both CoD and BF4 have perf. advantages on the PS4. Digital Foundry better get a server upgrade for the Next Gen Face-Offs. Wow.

Digital Foundry should be very interesting. Personally some of Leadbetter's articles this past year seem to imply something of a bias for XB

If that holds then what happens in Digital Foundry Face-offs will be anyone's guess

These consoles need to launch so we can see exactly what the differences will be since PS4 is running more games are higher res than Xbone. In some cases games that are multi platform.

Past year?

Here's an article from him from 2007:

"[redacted] certainly looks like a bona fide native resolution 1080p game [...] However, for curiosity's sake I loaded up the game in 1080p on Xbox *** and while it's clearly scaled up from 720p, the difference to the PS* version is not that significant, something readily apparent in the screenshot comparison."

Ugh that sounds painful

I don't understand leadbetter, he upsells the sixaxis angle that was a gimmick at best but completely downsells the graphical advantage which digital foundry is known for focusing on

lol.

I'm curious what his thoughts were on whether the difference between resolutions was important when they swung the other way for most of the rest of the face-offs for the 7th generation. Although I can guess.

We'll probably see the magic upscaler being touted a lot in face-offs throughout this gen. It's probably not good for one's health to be screaming internally for an extended period of time though.

See, it's not so big a deal. Consistency!

Leadbetter was in love with MS and the 360 far before DF ever existed, he was obvious when he used to post as grandmaster at B3D.

I found this to be hilarious. All the xbox fanboys on there is like condemning these two guys because they're asking legit questions on why Xbox haven't confirm or deny whether Ghosts will be 720p or 1080p.

This Kittty guy is about to get stoned lol

Yeah Ocelot was the highest voice of reason and they still tried to sway his logic

But look at this

worse case scenerio X1 will have upscaled 1080p (since the X1 has a built in upscaler and the PS4 doesn't) and the PS4 runs close to 1080P

The PS4 has to have a Upscaler built-in right? Likely the same one or similar due to the GPUs being so similar even if one is quite a bit more powerful

Oh boy. It's gonna be a long generation.

If Battlefield 4 truly is 1080p on one console and 720p on the other, consider be amazed. That's pushing more than two times the pixels, no compromises.

Will upscaled 720 look almost as good as native 1080? seriously

If your TV is 720p they will look the same.
If your TV is under 30 inches...Probably... If you game at a distance it might not be noticeable.
If you play close up on a monitor the difference is huge.
If the TV is above 40 inches native 1080p will be superior... The bigger or closer you get the more noticeable it becomes.

no

Yes it has an upscaler.

Nope. You could argue that it will look worse than the native 720p resolution.

I have a 50" 1080p TV that I sit 8' ft away from. You better believe there is a noticeable difference. Give me 1080p this generation please1!!!

Ok so eSRAM and tools are responsible for the720p's we're hearing about. Later on when games are no longer cross gen and are more demanding XB1 will still have the weaker GPU and the 32mb eSRAM. So I don't see things getting any better really

Well, looking at Xbone in a vacuum, games will indeed get better as the developer tools mature. When taken in the proper context of Xbone being a console in direct competition with the PS4 however, you are likely correct in your assumption that it will compare just as poorly or even worse as time goes on.

You are definitely not the only one that want 1080p, I use my monitor for console gaming. Gimme all them pixels.

Developers will learn how to use it more efficiently and the tools will improve. Like others have said, though, there will always be the performance gap between it and the PS4.
