Forbes Contributor: Reviewers Reporting Frame Rate Problems With 'CoD: Ghosts' On PS4

You guys realize that your display is outputting 60 Hz regardless, right?

Well, I hope perhaps Infinity Ward decided to go 720p because it will help the frame-rate, but at this point I'm not expectant.

If BF4 can go 900p on PS4 why couldn't COD have? 1080p is all well and good but frame rate issues? Euugh, thats the worst.

Doesn't help COD isn't a looker anyway. Seems like IW stretched themselves too thin, though if the 360 version is fine I guess at least they're smart enough to prioritise the version that will sell the best.

isn't bf4 60fps on both ?

Man if PS4 is struggling I hate to think what it'll be like on Xbone.

Don't expect the Xbox One to struggle, necessarily.

PS4 by all accounts is roughly 50% faster than the Xbox One in graphics rendering, and yet it's rendering 125% more pixels here. It was pretty obvious that the resolution gap was too large all else being equal. Something had to give, and apparently it may have been the framerate.

Could be the Xbox One version drops just as bad if it's a CPU bottleneck, though.

Most of these framerate drops described sound more like technical glitches related to the PS4 OS, UI, or streaming issues. There's no way Infinity Ward would allow regular noticeable framerate drops down to below 30fps... or "slow down to a crawl" as one reviewer mentioned. These kinds of massive framerate drops are usually an indicator of a streaming or OS bug, rather than the actual graphical horsepower of the system's CPU/GPU.

Edge mentioned that their frame rate drops only occurred during checkpoint saves. Which would imply a saving/HDD caching issue. But GiantBomb also mentioned a few drops in the MP too.

Wow.... Occasional drops from 60 is now more of an issue than 125% less pixels and not native display??!?? Are you fucking kidding me, and oh look the same old MS defence force for the rescue. Hell if the mighty 360 can manage it, and yet both Sony boxes cannot then I guess next gen is cancelled.... Let them have 360!!! Ahhh the hypocrisy is astounding!!

When the hell have any other versions of cod ran a "constant" 60fps? Never, that's when..
This game by all accounts runs crap on uber high end pc (and I am sure the reviewers know that) even the video for the x1 version has terrible frame drops for no reason at points.

Me thinks this game is now officially a skip.

Loving dat ps4 framerate hyperbole!!!

To me it seems more like selective noticing.

When you watch the DF performance videos on other CODs, the 360 versions have very clear drops in framerate, it does not (as a number of the quotes suggest) maintain a solid 60fps.

Watch the 2nd video that monitors the framerates - yes the 360 handles the framerates better, but they are far from maintaining it.

Indeed. Who cares about an occasional drop in frames. This thread is going insane. Damn

A hallmark of the COD series on the consoles has always, ALWAYS been the fact it runs at 60 frames per second.

They would not all of a sudden abandon that just to make it a higher resolution.

Unless of course, this was all on purpose, and MS PAID THEM OFF TO GIMP THE PS4 version!!!

Okay, that was a horrible joke, but all jokes aside, I just do not see how or why they would force it to be 60 fps if it was suffering massive frame rate drops. I do believe they would have dropped the resolution if that was indeed the case.

I'm one of those crazy people that actually likes fpses stabilized between 30 fps and 60 fps rather than rock solid 60, but you guys are crazy if you think the difference between 720p and 1080p is anywhere near as noticeable as frame drops. I would need to actually see two different systems running the game at two different resolutions to tell the resolution issue but frame drops are obvious. This isn't to say the XB1 version is preferable, but just that there's a pretty decent reason for reviewers thinking one is noticeable but not caring about the other, and it's not bias.

Giant Bomb at least reported frame rate issues on all three consoles.

First of all, the 50% figure is just a rough figure being thrown around, and is only referencing the gap in GPU performance; it doesn't account for the potentially problematic and slower DDR3 memory setup of the Xbox One.

Also, screen resolution doesn't scale linearly with performance. I.e., rendering 125% more pixels doesn't necessary require 125% more horsepower. Case in point, MW2 on PC benchmarks, running at various resolutions:

So the game is fucked on both next generation consoles and PC. Lovely job Infinity Ward and Activision.

It looks like it. It's time for me to decide if I still want that sexy Steelbook or not since the game seems to be a mess on any version.

What makes you so sure? You don't have to defend the PS4 power as we all have seen KZ and we know what the machine is capable of.

OS bug that cuts the frame rates in half when some smoke appears. That's a new one.

There are no hard numbers. The drop from 60 to 50 is nowhere near as noticeable as 125% more pixels, which is why people say things like "cod is solid 60" when we know it is anything but. We really need to better dimension what we're talking about.

I think you're the one who's crazy (or lacking good vision, awareness, a good HDTV, etc.). I would notice both of those things pretty easily (framerate drops to 30fps, and resolution drops down to 720p).

Maybe CoD: Ghosts is trying to become the Crysis of next gen?
The game that put Titan SLI on their knees. Except, it's ugly.

The reviewers all specifically call out the PS4 version as the one with the issue in comparison to the others. Why?

My honest guess is that either the frame rate is worse, or there is a particular bug or glitch causing the drops not there in the other versions. Eg the check point save thing Edge mentions. Really interested to see the comparisons either way.

X1 - weak console is weak.
PS4 - lazy devs are lazy.

So awesome.
Lol if you believe the ps4 is weaker then bone, the xbone is actually weak. This game was just rushed for next gen and is why it's having problems on both xbone and the other next gen consoles.

Are you telling me Polygon might not be totally subjective, what a surprise.

I wonder if these same outlets will mention framerate drops on the Xbox One version when the embargo is up, if it indeed has drops. My guess is that they will conveniently leave that out.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but framerate has never bothered me- I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to that. I would prefer 1080p, just for its effects on things like aliasing.

I'm more referencing the reviewers that claim the game sometimes "slows to a crawl" in seemingly unexpected, random situations. 30fps isn't "a crawl."
