PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

Well, my PS4 is working great, however, I seem to be having a small issue with my controller.

It seems like occasionally my controller is getting input as though I'm hitting the "Home" button, bouncing me back to specific parts of the menu, and one time even jumping me from my game back to the dashboard. I'm hoping that I can just jam on the home button a bit so whatever extra-sensitivity it seems to have works itself out, but it's a little worrisome. Obviously it's just a controller issue, so I could always go pick up another, but I'm curious to know, if this continues to be a problem, can I send it in to Sony without having to send the whole system in? I wouldn't mind getting another controller while I wait (I'll want two eventually anyway) but I don't want to send in the whole system for the controller's sake.

Anyone have a similar issue?

Is exFAT fine for formatting the drive?

Windows 7 Disk Management does not give me an option for FAT32...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's different from FAT32, though I don't know what the result would be if you tried using it. Mac's don't give the option for FAT32 and do give you exFAT either, but you have to instead select MS-DOS(FAT) for FAT32. Are there other options available?

So four people...

Could someone make a spreadsheet of the different locations and dates and the number working versus not working?

Would potentially be helpful for tracking trends.

Ehhh... Download a tool to do FAT32 to be safe. No reason to risk a new 400 dollar doorstop.

Try right clicking on the drive under My Computer and then format. FAT32 should be in there.

I don't get it , where are the codes? Are they suppose to be that white place because they're are not there?

WTF

Definitely haven't seen that. Mine has the codes.

It's not going to be all September consoles (that would mean there would be...god, hundreds of thousands of failures) but it could have been machines from one line for a week or something.

Quite a few people have been reporting this. I wonder if it's a firmware issue with 1.5

Are there any cases so far of ps4s getting the blue light death AFTER working well? Mine has worked fine, got 1.50 and played for several hours. Just checking if I am good to go or should still worry lol.

Only thing of note that happened was one time I turned it on and no sound. Restarted it and was fine.

Mine would start blue, then after a short amount of time, go White. It functioned how it was supposed to, other than it was not giving a video signal.

Edit: Yeah, it fixed it.

Un-fixed it. A slight amount of movement dislodged the connection, and I can't seem to get it back now. I guess I'll just get a refund.

Only NTFS when I right click under My Computer. Downloading a tool...

In the event anyone else is having the same issue. Have a Sony Bravia tv I bought a few years ago - when I first hooked up the PS4 all the text on screen was jaggy. Confirmed output was at 1080p (and lowering the resolution just made it worse to the point of being unreadable).

Solution was to update the firmware on my TV. Once I did that everything was just fine.

Well I got curious and opened mine back up to check and it's August. And it's definitely not working. Seems there's more to this.

At the moment it is more about 25% (54 of 209 one star reviews) on the standard launch edition.

The problem with this is anyone can write a review. You do not have to have purchased a PS4 from Amazon, or a PS4 at all . Anyone could go on there and say they have a defective unit. And you know, with console wars and all, I wouldn't put much stock in that AT ALL.

And to add to that, like was stated before, people just started getting the system from Amazon today. If it is working great, and they are playing games, they aren't thinking "Oh I need to leave a positive review on Amazon right now!!!"

Seriously? I did a search for "controller" in this thread and didn't see anyone else talking about it. Maybe I totally missed it. Would be better I guess if it was a firmware issue. Would you mind pointing me to others talking about it? (If it's in this thread, I'll look again.) Much appreciated!

A friend of mine on Twitter with a broken system says its Hongfujin Yantai China September 2013, but he says his friend has the same one that works.

Anyone having issues with ones picked up at Best Buy? My brother in law, myself, and 4 of my former students all seem to be working as expected so far.

Are you guys sure about FAT32?

Before you begin, note that the FAT32 file system has size limitations. You can't create a FAT32 partition greater than 32 gigabytes (GB). Also, you can't store a file larger than 4 GB on a FAT32 partition.

There are many verified purchase reviews you know...

BLOD - Hongfujin Yantai China September 2013. I got it going again but then died again. Sony has the coffin on the way.

They should really only allow "verified purchase" reviews on anything. There are a number of 1 star "I picked mine up today and what a piece of junk! Returning to the store and using the money to buy an Xbox one!" reviews that aren't verified purchases... and also a number of people crossposting over all PS4 bundles/SKUs... Somehow I don't think Amazon can be used as an accurate barometer.

So far we have sixteen reports of broken units (BLOD) from Hongfujin Yantai China. Most were from September 2013, one from August 2013:

hongfujin yantai china september 2013

Same here (pic), Manufactured: Hongfujin Yantai China in September 2013.

We both have the same problem, same factory/manufacture date, both ordered from Amazon... Guessing there was a bad run.

Count me in as a third on that.

Same.

I've had mine unplugged for hours at a time. Ain't no fixing the BLOD.

Just wanted to add that my broken unit - pulsing blue light, won't go into safe mode - was also labeled as made in Hongfujin Yantai China in September 2013.

It was a launch edition from Amazon

Mine is Hongfujin Yantai China August 2013.

I'm getting the BLOD and can't boot to safe mode.

We posting bad unit manufacturing details? Alright. My defect amazon was September, Yangtai.

Sure mine is: Hongfujin Yantai China September 2013

hongfujin yantai china september 2013. Shipped from Amazon. I see a lot of people with that batch having problems.

Same as the same poster on this page so I copied and pasted it....

Add me to the "hongfujin yantai china september 2013. Shipped from Amazon" pile.

Tried the remove HD and boot fix but that didn't work. Can't get to the safe mode either, so time to contact Sony.

mine is a September Amazon PS4....dead after a couple of hours of use

Hongfujin Yantai China is a dead to me!

I seem to have a bad PS4 from this god forsaken land as well. It ran this afternoon for a few hours playing BF4, then went dark. Blinking blue light, no safe mode, no hdd sneak. :/

what firmware? 1.50
purchased from where? Amazon
what is your A/V set up like? HDMI into Toshiba TV
what resolution do you want to output in? 720p
were you able to get any video signal or none at all? Had video when running, not since it went dark.
can you hear audio? Nopes. :(

LoL - oh, to have won by drawing this bad batch of PS4s.....

curious question for anyone - can anyone get into Blacklight Retribution or does it say "server timed out"

also Warframe locks your ps4 up sometimes so becareful with that while it patches.

For what it's worth, my issue appears to be different than what I gather most people are having.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Is there a way to check this information on the PS4 before you buy without opening the box?

I would like to add mine was purchased from Amazon also. This seems like where most of them were purchased from that it is happening with.

Weird that I'm the only one so far with August. I also got it from Amazon if you're interested.

The system was working for a bit and then shut off randomly while downloading some games. That time I was able to just turn the system back on. Then it shut of again while playing Contrast but I was able to get into safe mode and reboot. Then the sound started getting weird while playing AC4 eventually leading to a crash. I was able to get into safe mode once more and tried running option 6 but on restart it went back to BLOD and I haven't been able to get back into safe mode since.
