PS4 sells through 1 million units on Day 1 in NA, best start in PS / console history

This goes in line with what I expected. Sony Started production up in august and built around a half million units. September they made closer to 750,000. Every last one of those units got shipped to the US/Canada for november 15th but they came by boat so you'd have stuff arriving at sony's distribution by the end of october and then 2 weeks of units trickling out to store shelves. Europe might get the short end of the stick here a bit, I don't think Sony has ramped production up past 750K a month yet. So October for example, the first 500,000 systems built in china made their way to UK/Europe for the Nov.29th launch but the rest of the systems built ? well Gotta have some black Friday stock, as well as a few units to compete directly with MS.

Move along to December shipments and I think you'll have 300-400K shipped to north America and Europe. January will mirror December in terms of shipments and after that 1 of 2 things will happen, should the system still be selling out by the end of January , Sony will most likely attempt to start up another production to bring monthly production up to 1 million systems. The second option is that units manufactured in January and February will be stockpiled , north America and Europe get short shipped for 2-3 months. I'm talking 125,000 shipped consoles a piece for February and march. The reason being, Japanese launch is before the fiscal year end and Sony will try to have as close to a million units ready as possible.

Things get a bit simpler after march though, if the production remains the same you'll see 250K consoles shipped to Asia, Europe and North America for April through September. That first option of ramping production up early next year is very expensive and demand may not stay that high for all of 2014. So easing off shipments for a couple months to set up that Japanese launch is probably just easier.

Sony may activate that extra production line to produce 3 million systems that can ship by christmas 2014. These would be built from Sept. through Nov. Any units manufactured in December wouldn't make it to retail until January 2015 you see. The end result will be the following scenario -

End of 2014 outlook - 13.5 million produced, 12.5 million shipped
US roughly 4.8 million shipped
EU/UK 3.9 million shipped
Asia 3 million shipped

Now obviously , while the produced /shipped totals may stay the same the distribution WILL be based on demand. I feel strongly that each of those 3 major territories can sustain a minimum of 2 million sales at the current price and demand. This to me is like the best case scenario , if sales stay fairly consistent over the next 14 months and xbox under preforms as I expect it will this should all be achievable for sony. Even my lowball estimate is for 10 million produced and 9 million shipped and that scenario would see demand drop dramatically after the holidays to the point that sony produces just 500K a month for some of next yet. Or perhaps a part shortage/ natural disaster slows down production.

This is why I chuckled in another thread when another poster was insistent that the "PS4 won't be sold out until January". I'm thinking it will continue to be hard to find one until the end of March actually. By summer supply and demand will catch up though.

For those "waiting for a price drop" because 400$ for a brand new console is apparently too much money- bad news, they are priced perfectly for what the market is willing to pay and that won't change until sometime in 2015. Much like last gen price drops won't really come in the form of "now 50$ off" so much as adding more value to the 400$ box. On that note, I expect a 1 TB model will be available by next christmas for the same price and the remaining 500GB models will come with 3 months of PS+ and a game or perhaps even the camera tossed in there. The game in question will undoubtedly be knack :p Come 2015 though, just for marketing reasons , Sony may well have a 349.99 model that comes with 500GB hard drive and nothing else.

Where does MS sit in this giant clusterfuck ? I believe they started production a month later then Sony did. I also think they didn't bother to have 3 production lines because their pre-order numbers weren't as high(going by anecdotal evidence and the handful of released figures, they seem to be 50-60% of what sony's demand is) and demand WILL be lower because of the high asking price.

To that end I feel Microsoft, especially if they don't have a price drop next year (they badly need one) will produce only 7 or 8 million consoles and ship 6-7 million of them total by the end of 2014. Demand will likely be just high enough to sell out for 3-4 months in North America but I don't even see a sell out situation occurring anywhere else. This will change slightly if they DO manage a price drop , they'd have to do one by April and it HAS to be 100$. In fact, I'd say a 399.99 Xbox One that comes with TitanFall is the only way they will be able to compete next spring/summer. This will eat into their profits and only push the new CEO further into the "sell off the gaming division" rhetoric. I don't think it will happen but there's a very real chance you won't have a microsoft gaming console in 5 years.

You are either absolutely right, or this is one of the most amazing pieces of fan-fiction I've read on this website. No in-between.

By the way, are you confirming that Europe has a separate production line (as in assembly plant)to NA?:

They surprisingly did everything right and listen to what people wanted and got a great outcome. I can't wait til the library of games matures so I can pick one up.

That is the only thing I can fault in the ps4 is lack of any games I want to play.

Not gonna happen.

It was a projection.

I think $499 is going to be almost as damaging as $599 was for Sony. Especially since Sony has one particular messaging advantage "more power for less". This won't mean much for the masses, but it means something to those that drive initial interest in any platform. This can create a cascade of support that might not have existed otherwise.

This is just a year away anyway. We'll find out soon enough.

Looking at how their stocks are doing and how much money they have just sitting there, I'd say quite a ways.

MS stocks =/= Xbox stocks.
MS cash reserves =/= Xbox cash reserves.

If tomorrow, Apple/Google comes out with an Office/Windows/Exchange killer app, MS would kill off Xbox and Bing without hesitation.

Why are the words "Xbox" or "Microsoft" anywhere in this thread?

I'm very happy to be one of the million lucky gamers to adopt the awesome PS4. Congratulations, Sony. Job well done.

Xbox 360 2 would probably be massively popular.

all ms needed to do was make xbox 360 2 and market it as such

Instead we got kinect 2 TV remote watercooler fantasy sports always online 400 fucking million dollar NFL deal

400 mill buys alot of games, i mean really what the fuck

From my massive database, and from a lot of research and digging check out (nearly) all past USA launches:

*=my own projections from various sources, sorry it couldn't be more concrete but I couldn't find SOLD figures for them. Please help if you do indeed have them.

[older sources:
GB="Game Over" book
SNES=2-3 week pre nation-wide launch; estrapolated from major gaming stores only (official launch was a few weeks later)
PSX=100k SCEA "official" but this includes all NA, given NPD data to SCEA "sold" usually 75%
The rest should be legit.]

Mind you I do NOT believe 1m PS4s were sold in USA alone [maybe shipped], until we get concrete Fri-Sat USA-only sales I will not update this graph.

Gies never pad that bet did he

Nope, he ran from that one. That should tell you all you need to know about him. Making a bet, and paying up, is part of ones character. When you "put your money where your mouth is" and you find out you are wrong, you pay up. It's not like he didn't agree to the bet, he did. That just shows where his morals are when it comes to be a responsible person you can trust someone whose words have merit. That is just one example of his character.

If people don't like Polygon, then don't give them clicks. Don't watch their live feeds, don't click on their reviews, don't read their previews. Ignore them. Their website makes money through traffic. Let them have the crowd they cater too, and the rest can go to sites they can trust.

OK, on topic. These sales numbers are amazing. It really makes you wonder what Sony is going to add to those numbers in the coming weeks. Plus, Amazon has had the system on sale several times since launch, so those are more sales. Then you have Europe in a couple of weeks. That will just really add to those numbers. It will be very interesting what the sales numbers will be for both of these systems at the end of the year. I find it very hard to believe the Xbox One will outsell the PS4 in the first 24 hours , ie selling more than 1 million consoles.

I think the crazy thing is, since Sony has floated these numbers out there, Microsoft will not be able to float any numbers out if they aren't more than a million. Even if they sell 800,000 units, which would be fantastic, they know Sony sold more. They are not going to concede anything. I predict after the first weekend of the Xbox One launch, you are going to get something along the line of "There were over 1 million Xbox Ones shipped!" or "The sales of Xbox One helped make this the most successful Xbox launch in history." Why am I bringing up the Xbox One? Because this is a video game forum, and the PS4 doesn't exist in this market all by itself.

Just paraphrasing what I can recall, so don't quote me on it. :)

When playing through KZ, Geis and Plante were doing nothing but throwing snarky jokes, complaining about how the game isn't exciting. They didn't outright said the game sucked, but they sure tried to make the viewers as unexcited as possible about the game.

When playing through multiplat games like Ghost, NFS, etc, they were basically saying shit like "man, I can't tell the resolution difference, I'm sure the games will look as good on Xbox too, blahblahblah."

In-between stuff, they were spreading FUD like "I know Sony cut out the camera to get the undercut MS, because's that what the kind of stuff only Sony would do."

Shifted over to David/Ross Miller of the Verge when playing Knack, and they were 'meh' on it. It was fine until they accepted a call from a listener asking for their thoughts on future PS4 exclusives they were excited in, which Ross then said "I'm not excited for anything aside from Titanfall."

When playing through Resogun, Sound Shapes, etc, it was upbeat and good. No snark, just enjoying the games. Different guys though, not your usual Polygon guys.

They had a summary roundtable at the end, which was all kinds of insane.
"MS is the only one introducing new IPs."
"I think the PS4 price will drop very soon."
"There's no good games at launch."
"There's nothing until inFamous, and who knows what else is coming."
"Sony fucked up by not having the indies at launch."
"Titanfall, man."
"There's no real need to buy a PS4 now."

Something along those lines.

Is there anyway I can watch the Polygon Livestream on my phone? I only wanna watch the parts with the guys from "The Verge".

Where exactly are you getting this information from? They have too much invested in it now to simply stop supporting it. Rumor has it Sony is losing money off of every PS4 sold but will be profitable if people buy a game and maybe Plus memberships. Meanwhile the XBox One is selling a bit above cost so they have more room to waggle. Sony lost a lot of money on the PS3 and they don't have anywhere near the reserves MS does. You should watch the latest Bonus Round, they talk about MS and the position they are in and what they may do if sales plummet to that of the PS4. Not one of them even hinted at MS dropping the XBox One.

The suits got their grubby hands on the Xbox division and is using it for their own agenda. Not entirely unlike what happened to the PS3, with it being used as a Trojan horse for Blu-Ray and other wider Sony initiatives. And just like the PS3, the bone is suffering because of it.

This!! Sony Corp. is much more invested & reliant on PlayStation, than Microsoft is of Xbox.

Welp, now I'm kind of worried that I will not be able to find one by the time Infamous Second Son hits the stores.

I recruited a family member to try to snag one for me during Black Friday since I'm out of the country til mid-Dec. If that fails I have a friend that managed to grab 2 at launch and he was cool enough to offer to sell me his extra one at MSRP with no mark up... which means drinks are on me that night but that's fair enough.

So... Chrome OS, Google Drive, and Gmail? :p Doesn't seem like they're killing MS much, and doesn't seem like MS is killing the Xbox and Bing. I will agree though, in honesty Microsoft doesn't care or need the Xbox brand much, and would quickly kill it if they want, sadly.

Hope this shuts people up about this being the last generation for consoles.

Can't imagine the demand in Europe aka Sonyland. Gonna be a historic November.

Where exactly are you getting this information from?

Tales from my ass.

My point was that Xbox is but a blimp in the overall MS business. How much money MS has does not translate to how much Xbox can afford to spend.

If MS was serious about Xbox, they are financially more than capable of absorbing $400 loss per console and sell the One at $99 instead.

Buy no way will they do that because it is not worth it, even if they can afford it.

The first non-Nintendo console I've ever bought on launch outside of the Dreamcast(hey, that was different...). Ok Sony, I took the plunge after seeing your magnificent strides, preordered first day it was available to, and supported day 1. Don't fail me, please!

And they know nothing about MS internals. Once the new CEO is announced, we'll be in a much better position to guess how much support the loser divisions will continue getting.

Apple & Google are already killing MS on OS marketshare.

Microsoft definitely can't afford for either company to get the heads up on them anymore.

Launch interest doesn't determine market interest. WiiU performed similarly to Wii launch month, stagnated Dec, and cratered in Jan. But this being the single largest console launch day is very impressive.

I gotta figure for a lot of them, the availability 100% determined what their sales were.
btw any info on the Sega Saturn?

This. Not sure why these guys thought MS could afford to treat the xbone like their cashcow, for window or office, hell yeah they can dump a motherfucking shitload to dominate or even stay competitive, but the xbone is far from what MS would consider their bread and butter, at some point Google is going to try to muscle MS out of their core markets and MS would need all the money they have to defend their turf.

Can we stop giving Gies and Kuchera so much unwarranted attention for their shit tweets. I don't follow them on twitter for a reason, I don't need to follow them on here.
Well... I think by this time next year you'll be able to buy a PS4 from $299-$399.

But this will be because of One's pricing stifling growth, MS drastically lowering the price, and Sony responding in kind to keep the advantage.
I'm expecting value adding next year (HDD increase and/or game bundling), and a proper price drop in 2015, probably ahead of GT7.

I expect Microsoft to try to get to $399 while remaining profitable. This either means waiting longer or dropping Kinect. I don't think they are prepared to take significant losses for Xbox anymore.

What do you mean "in USA alone"? It only is on sale in Canada and the USA. The numbers by default have to be USA+Canada alone. And the article specifically mentions both territories in its 1 million SOLD through to consumer, which Yoshida also confirmed.

You actually think they're LYING about their sell through!? Man I am as cynical as anyone, but the shit storm they'd get if this story was BS... no way dude. The only logical thing is that these numbers are true. And it's for 24 hours.

I would buy it in Black friday but the fact that I'm buying a PS3 this month doesn't help and I'm really not interested in any lunch title. Come January though, if Driveclub is released that month (highly doubt it) and I see a PS4 in the wild I'll probably impulse buy it.
