Jack Tretton: 12,000 PS4s sold out in 27 mins @ Amazon (average of 19,000,000/month)

Sony always gets a free pass for their spin on GAF. When Microsoft does it, people are complaining and when Sony does it everyone is being all jolly about it.

Double standards here. Brad Shoemaker was right.

Persecution complex at play.

Tretton saw what Larry was doing, so he responded in the exact same manner. Had MS PR not used the "fastest selling" its likely that Tretton would never have mentioned this.

MS decided to spin things, out of sheer necessity as they got outsold in their own market, Sony decided to play ball and return the favor.

I dont want to say "deal with it" because i doubt the mods here look well upon it, but this is a perfect case of having to deal with it.

Mess with a bull, you get the horns

It seems none of you guys realise this spin didn't come from Sony. All Jack said on the blogcast was the '12k on Amazon' anecdote. The 19mil was a mod edit (my dibs on Y2Kev).

This is GAF mocking the Microsoft spin of the Nov NPD.

Oh god, I hope they aren't losing too much money per console.

They are obviously selling too fast right now and need to slow it down. If they continue at this rate they would lose $190,000,000 per month. In one year, it would cost them $2.2 billion dollars. I hope Sony realises this before it is too late.

I didn't think there would be a price to pay for success, but if there is any prime example, this is it.

I love jack's voice

When he started talking about wanting to go into the movie buisness if he was not into videogames, all I could hear was Michael DeSanta.

Come think of it...

He kind of sounds and looks like Michael....

Ohshi.....

If this generation lasts into ten years, they'll be losing trillions. I don't think Sony can survive that.

They already had to sell their HQ to afford the launch, and they sold way less than 19 million a month.

Think of the employees they have to lay off if they keep the thing on the market.

Sony. please remove the PS4 from the market and I don't just say this because it would leave the Xbox One uncontested. I'm only thinking about the employees and their families here!

That is the difference between having an overly positive message for the last year compared to having a bad one tho, right? Not sure who Brad Shoemaker is but it seems you both have a little catching up to do if you don't understand why there is any contempt towards Microsoft this year. Notice how I left it at the whole company, not just the gaming division.

I'm %90 sure that's wrong. I'd like to say Tretton's interview in the podcast was made a week ago or so. Also, listen to his interview. It's really good. Guy loves to talk, seeing as he doesn't get the officially sanctioned chance to do so, often.

Does it even matter? Tretton is using the same tactic as Larry is, whether its a direct reply or not, it does not negate the fact that its the same kind of approach to tout your own horn.

Am I the only one who thinks that Sony's suits are pretty cool and likeable and the MS come over as proper Douche bags???

Not just you, Jack tretton has always been a likeable guy, don't get me started on that genius Shu, Adam Boyes really loves video games, and Andrew House has very straightforward statements. That isn't to say they didn't have some unique characters before IE Ken Kutaragi and Kaz Hirai.

MS on the other hand, have had some real Warriors of Virtue. Really honest guys that do not ask for apologies and are always truthful.

Aaron greenberg, Adam Orth, Albert Penello, Don Mattrick and of course Larry Hyrb.

Selling their HQ is just par for the course. Real estate is a big part of Sony business. You won't believe how many apartments they sell every day, since the daily average is such an important metric to you. They (and their families) will survive. Why do you underestimate Sony all the time?

It does matter. Your argument was initially based around it that Jack Tretton is retaliating by using his own PR to counter-act what Major Nelson was doing.

What actually happened is that the podcast hosts asked him questions they got from twitter, one which was about how Sony is managing Supply and Demand.

He explained how the launch was based on months of production and they try to get out as much as possible as quickly as possible and mentioned their last weeks Amazon restocking and that demand is higher than supply while being apologetic that people that have $400 and the intention to buy a PS4, can't get one at the moment.

It does not matter. Tretton still used the exact same "math" that Larry did, to achieve the same thing: Tout your own product.

Its no surprise that Sony can use similar PR, they introduced the "Playstation family" PR when they were getting their ass kicked. Now Microsoft developed their own spin, next month the "fastest" wont work, so they can borrow Sony's "Xbox family" to cover their ass, or they can just refuse to give out numbers and stay silent.

Maybe Jack suspected Microsoft would use this spin, and counter attacked with the very same tactic in order to invalidate MS spin.

Regardless of who said what, when, how and why, MS lost NA to Sony at launch of both of their products. Some good spinning was bound to happen one way or another, we have seen Sony's in the past, now we see Microsoft's in the present.

As far as I can see the preorder statement is just a random fact to show demand for PS4.

The fastest selling console statement is rather a conclusion that while not being completely untrue is just a little far fetched.

Actually I think both are fine as even the MS spin is typical PR talk everyone should be able to draw his own conclusion from.

So your issue is not even with the MajorNelson and this thread, but with all the other threads that announced any numbers?

Because they announced over a million in 24 hours a few days after the NA launch.

All in all this statement is completely bogus:

Because according to you, they already did this last month. They said the amount of numbers and a time frame.

I personally did not object to MajorNelson sharing how many Xbones they sold in a certain period of time, only calling it "fastest selling" which is untrue.

I am not the one with a issue here, hehe

Actually, you might have a point if Tretton did that. But you don't.
It's that sort of reply that sort of makes me wonder if the OP should be edited to say it's NeoGAFmath™ a la Major Nelson but it's just way way way too much fun watching people not read any of the thread, not use any deductive reasoning, and randomly rage.

You realize the title change of this thread was a joke and wasn't what Tretton actually said, right? Amazon got a shipment of PS4's totaling 12,000 and they sold out in 27 minutes. That's all he was saying and it wasn't some anti-MS spin.

Let him believe what he wants. The entertainment seeing what some of these people believe is golden.

I am well aware of that the 19,000,000 a month is a joke meant towards Larry and his own tweet. Tretton is not the one who said that, he just said they sold out in 27 minutes, and he is obviously happy about that. Hence he is still doing PR, no different than what Larry is doing. Larry just has to work harder now because the product he wants to do better is behind.

Let him believe what he wants. The entertainment seeing what some of these people believe is golden.

There is no element of belief here, the fact is that the PS4 outsold the Xbox One in North America.

I can't tell if you guys are playing around as a joke cause OP might have made a mistake in the title or not. Is it really 19 million/month?

Its a joke. Its suppose to mock Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb attempt to use "fastest selling" to make the Xbox One seem like the most successful next gen console.

Its like if i played 6 seconds in a NBA game and scored a 3 point shot and got subbed immediately, i would have a 100% 3pts shooting percentage and highest amount of points per game if measured against time played. Above Kareem, Jordan, LeBron, Magic etc.

This is bad news for Sony.

12000 PS4s in 27 minutes work out at 444 per minute.

This is dwarfed by the Xbox One all in One entertainment system from Microsoft which, according to official sources and not "insiders" with unclear agendas, did 1000 per minute.

Man, this thread title change is getting all kinds of people who think Jack really said this. It doesn't help that the OP link is a 2.5 hour podcast.
Add ad-hoc reasoning on top of that, where Jack must have said this as a response to Major Nelson! ;-)

OP be sad.

No one read post, only title.

Rage funny.

Srsley tho, the podcast was posted 13/12. This means that in all likelihood it was recorded before (as in before) Hyrrrb did his fastest selling bit. This would mean that JT was just using the Amazon anecdote as an example of the high demand for PS4, not responding to Hyrrrb.
