Note that while the game is available worldwide it is in Japanese only.
I've been playing it a bit and it's surprisingly decent so far. Basically you take on quests and you go to a dungeon where you move between rooms, in the rooms you can find treasure or gold bags which you tap to obtain, and sometimes you also run into monsters. Unlike other popular social games like, say, Guardian Cross, where you don't really do much, in this one the battles play out just like in any other DQ game and are not automated.
I'm still early so the battles have been pretty simple so far, hopefully they get harder and require more strategy later on.

Also the game is really pretty:

The sprites are animated!
I'm actually kind of surprised at how high quality it feels, really makes me wish this wasn't a social game but a full fledged one.

Super Light indeed!

But I thought this was already released? And by the way, what happened to that "next DQM game" from a mysterious scan? Hoax?

Edit : agreed, looks quite nice.

I got really excited then saw that the price was free :C

If I told myself ten years ago I'd snub my nose at a "free" game due to red flags, a Dragon Quest game no less, I'd have slapped my future self.

Is this another F2P game that stains my love for a series I cherish?

Looking at the pictures make me want to say YES
Seeing that it's free make me want to say NO

But since it's free I might as well find out for myself if it's a good game or if it's a game like P&D or others that'd be a good game if it didn't have needless time restrictions, gambling mechanics, and used various psychological triggers to compel a person to spend money.

---

Says it's incompatible with my device. Is it because it's Japanese?

I keep getting communication errors on Android. (._. )

It's not available in the US on Android, only on iOS. You can us one of those APK downloaders to bypass the region restriction for free apps.

The baby sabercat on the installation screen is pretty cute.

Digging the installation music too despite the fact that it's giving me DQX Wii update flashbacks and making me hyperventalate.

I downloaded this, and it is indeed very nice to look at. I don't know any Japanese so I really don't know what's going on, but I'll see how far I get with it.

This is really charming despite not knowing what the menus say. Hopefully someone puts up some guides. I'd really like to keep playing it.

It's something like this: humans and monsters used to live together happily, but long ago many monsters got an evil heart, you have the power to bring understanding among monsters and humans, so you've been chosen to be a monster master.

That's the story/tutorial up to the golem (which lives in the ruins of an old city).

Been enjoying this game this evening, well done and looks like it will have quite the extensive collection of monsters.

Quick rundown of the menus:
Bottom 6 tabs go:
マイぺージ My page
クエスト Quest
モンスター Monsters
ショップ Shop
フレンド Friends
その他 Other Stuff

The Monsters Page looks like this:
パーティを組む Create party
気合伝授 Gang initiation (actually it is Fighting Spirit Instruction)
パワーパップ Powerup
旅に出す Leave on a trip
転生させる Be reincarnated
お別れする Set free
モンスターを見る View monsters

Friend Page looks like this:
フレンドを見る View friends
フレンドを探す Search for friends
手紙を見る View letters
手紙を送る Send letters

I can translate the rest, but that's the important stuff.

Oh cool. Yeah, it's mostly the menus I get confused by. (Edit: which I just caught you posted some of - thanks!) Considering it's a free game, I don't wanna run into things I pay money for without understanding what I'm getting. Done some quests though and I have full five member team. Love the bonus scroll thing where you can fight the special monster for a chance to grab him.

Under the ショップ tab, the very top menu ギェムを買う "Buy Gems" is the only thing I found that costs real money, everything else is bought using Gems, except for monster growing things which use ゴールド "gold" and silver magic treasure maps which use サポートポイント "support points". The Buy Gems menu has a security measure to keep from accidental purchases, it asks for the month and year you were born and limits how many you can buy in a month depending on that. Basically just avoid any page that has the character 円 and you should be cool.

Downloaded. Not really sure why this is on the US store, but oh well, it's Dragon Quest!

Er, it's not in the US Google Play Store, not really. Not sure about iOS.

Here's Square Enix's available offerings in the Google Play store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=SQUARE ENIX Co.,Ltd.&hl=en

Yes, you can load the app directly by going here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.Android_dqmsuperlight

But that's only because Google only partially supports the region lock BS. You can do that with any app, by loading it directly. For example, here's DQM Wanted (which recently went free to play):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.dqmw&hl=en

DQ8:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.dq8j&hl=en

And here's a Rocket Slime Mobile game I never heard of:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.naver.SJLGDQ&hl=en

Anyway, it's all there but region locked.

No region issues on iOS.

I played a dozen quests without hitting the Stamina wait/paywall. The game looks and sound pretty great on iPad TBH.

It's not amazing but it's solid, simple fun. It's hard to pass judgment without seeing how things pan out if you play longer. Typically, how critical magic maps turn out to be, considering you can only buy them with support points (essentially social Exp) and gems (currency).

So, it's been a day since this came out and it's already the third top grossing app in the Japanese app store:
RBKmsIM.png

Been playing a bit more and I still really like it.

Also, the Line Slime game KiTA linked to is really fun, I actually started playing the iOS version the other day and it's probably one of the best arcade-like games on iOS I've played.

Kinda nice. You can definitely feel some Puzzle and Dragons influences on it. I wonder if they're going to have monster breeding in this like the main DQM games, or if it's going to be a random chance + lotto sorta thing like P&D.

Dungeons are not randomly generated -- this is no roguelike like the mainline DQM games -- but individual encounters in dungeons are.

Interesting aside, they're apparently using cocos2d-x to dev it, based on the credits page.

Oh, and this is the 15th year anniversary of Dragon Quest Monsters.

Unfortunately, no English localization credits like DQ1 and DQ8 mobile had.

Goli: you talking about コゼニと〜る? I played that a few months ago, but it was too fun and took too much of my time. LOL. I should start it back up, I've got quite a few coins that I haven't spent. Looks like SE has released a new stamp pack for Line too the other day.

My id for Super Light is 100,134,968

Yeah, that one! I actually started playing it because I wanted new Line stickers but kind of got addicted to the game in the process.

I'm guessing no news on possible english version soon ?
There probably won't be. DQ isn't very big in the states. You can still download it in the US store, what part is tripping you up, I can do a bit more translating if you guys who can't read japanese need it.

I dunno, I love DQM (I'm one of those crazy guys that prefer them to mainline Pokemon) but this doesn't sound terribly exciting. It just sounds very, very basic.

Small pet peeve:
Gems should've been called "Tiny Medals". :O

Anyway, got to the third area (map ~11 I think), and it's already getting pretty hard now.

Wasted 500 gems to pull out a monster map, and got a metal slime.
I thought I hit the jackpot, but seems to be only used like Metal Dragons in PAD (free feed exp).

Game is polished, but seems to have the typical PAD moments where your game experience will be frustrating in the long run if you can't pull out a higher ranked monster from gems early on.

Liking the little narrative, the game is good at putting in signs and characters aside from Watabou to talk to you and guide you in the levels. I doubt I will bother translating Watabou's narration though as so far it isn't too important, however I may go and do translations of the mini quests dialog in the dungeons. I never got too far in Pazudora, but I think DQMSL has much more dialog (even if it is just generic DQ fluff).

I'm sure some of you have found out, avoid the battle on the other side of the laughing witch, they are pretty powerful, but it seems you will have to go back to battle them to progress in the game.

The game is pretty fun when you work for the missions. I'm going to post a spreadsheet of the first 50 or 60 mission conditions translated into English when I get home this evening. Is this something I should continue to work on? Or are most non speakers of Japanese doing okay without it? (Maybe there aren't very many people playing)

Helpful Hint: You can hold your finger down on objects to bring up information: Mission conditions and status on dungeons, Monster information on Party member frames, etc.

If they are working on translating Dragon Quest 1 & 2 Mobile (from that other thread), maybe we'll see this in English sooner than we think.

Is the game quitting unexpectedly for anyone else? It never fails to crash after the start screen as of last night.

I'm going to update my spreadsheet this weekend, but I have a feeling that no one plays any longer.

I did a stupid thing and deleted the app hoping to reinstall it and make it work. It generated a new ID for me and I lost all my progress. I sent a message to SE tech support, but I imagine there may be no way for me to get my progress back. Unless I can get it back I doubt I will be playing anytime soon. Really enjoyed the game aside from that, was starting to make some good progress.
