Albert Penello downplays XBO/PS4 difference in Tomb Raider; "we just shipped"

“Look, I had a lot of time to think about this and I believe in what I said. I believe that the differences between the boxes [PS4 and Xbox One] is not all that great and I know what is going behind the scenes and I have access to more information about some of this thing than a lot of people. Sometimes people tend to neglect the points that are in my favor and they like to highlight the points that tell me I am wrong. I still think Ryse is still the best looking game on any platform. Period. End of story,” he said.
“I think if you look at the title which we launch, which were multiplatform titles. The bulk of them were the same. I think there were 12 titles were released on both platforms [PS4 and Xbox One], leaving three, all of them had the same performance on both boxes. Everybody wants to focus on frame rate, there is Tomb Raider, there is a resolution thing going on and OK, there could be a lot of reasons why that could be true but we are just a [few] weeks in, we just shipped, it’s a long generation. People who bought an Xbox One are going to be in for an awesome generation of games that are only going to get better. I think these little things get way overblown versus like the quality of the games and the real differences in experiences which are pretty minor,” he said.

"It's like, we're the movie theater that has all the blockbuster movies, and has the most screens, and then somebody has figured out that there's also another movie theater that has less screens but if you look at this one movie, like, sometimes it looks better on their screen. And in our movie theater, sometimes some of our movies look better.

You know what, I think the games on PS4 look fantastic, I play them, I enjoy them...it's a great thing for this industry that they have success...at the end of the day, if I have to pick one box, I'm gonna pick ours. I work here, so I root for the home team."

He is delusional. Why can't they just admit they've gimped the design and it's going to be like the an entire generation.

Wait so is he saying there were not other titles that performed better on PS4? That's just flat out a lie.

Appeal to a position of authority being used to stifle discussion and actual debate. Squirming out of using tangible indicators that can actually be used to measure system performance.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Ok, it's one of those threads.

We need jokes about
- MS bribing
- Major Nelson's facts
- "Removing DRM is not just clicking a button"
- That 1080p quote
- Have you seen Titanfall
- One being the next gen water boiler
- Banderas
- Sony Too!

People, you know what to do. Go, go, go!

People DO understand that Microsoft has some of the smartest graphics programmers IN THE WORLD. They CREATED DirectX, the standard API’s that everyone programs against. So while people laude Sony for their HW skills, do you really think they don’t know how to build a system optimized for maximizing graphics for programmers? Seriously? There is no way they’re giving up a 30%+ advantage to Sony. And ANYONE who has seen both systems running could say there are great looking games on both systems. If there was really huge performance difference – it would be obvious.

You just shipped and the gap is already this noticeable, the difference will only grow in time.

Something something this is a marathon not a sprint.

Barely any (100%) difference in frame rate.

Practically speaking there's no difference between a honda civic or a bugatti veyron either. They're both cars!

I'm just going to say: having a job around saying stuff like this every other day must be really tiring.

The box that is $100 cheaper has a 100% framerate advantage over its rival.

I can see why he'd want to downplay the differene with this game alright.

He's pretty good at what he does, I'll give him that. A mild concession with an undercurrent of 'wait and see'.

Exactly. I mean I don't know why anyone would be surprised by what he says. Just doing his job even if that is 'massaging the truth' greatly.

For people saying "what else could he say?"
He should keep his mouth shut.
Stuff like this makes Xbox look like even more of a joke than it was before.

What qualifies as a big deal then? 720p v. 1080p no big deal. 30fps v. 60fps, no big deal. If these things are no big deal, then how can you sell the XB1/PS4 as a "big deal" compared to the previous generations? Aight cool, no big difference between x360 and XB1, stick with x360 then.

"The real differences in experiences are pretty minor." Albert Penello

Great! Not worth bothering or making a big noise about all the Xbone media stuff then. Glad that's settled. May as well get the more powerful, better value machine.

Edit: reading it again, I didn't even need to be that deliberately disingenuous :) "I think these little things get way overblown versus like the quality of the games and the real differences in experiences which are pretty minor,” he said.

It's right there. The man needs to think before he opens his mouth.

Given the vast amount of evidence to the contrary, can we conclude that he's just an unabashed bullshitter or do we think he's genuinely drank too much of the company kool-aid?

He seems to imply there are current issues with xbone development ecosystem which may be hindering it's gaming performance.

Hopefully, Ms can iron these issues out.
