Very unlikely. Based on historical figures, I analysed the end of year hardware numbers last week, and concluded that PS4 won't overtake Wii U until at least another year. You can find the analysis and Chris' historical figures in last week's thread.

There's a whole bunch of unknowns so I find it hard to make such a definitive statement.

So was the Wii U the wrong system for #FE and it should have been a 3DS game or could it just be the game was to niche?

While SMT and Fire Emblem games have fans on the Wii U and 3DS there might not be any Persona fans and #FE looked closer to that then either of the two games it was suppose to be a crossover of?

Just bad release date in general?

Will PS4 reach 3 million LTD by summer?

I'd say afterwards. September/october?

Just way too hard to market and niche focus. Even on Vita it might not have been higher than 120k at best imo.

Really good performance of Minecraft Vita. It's finally a game again for Sony that is also getting love from the younger audience and it's probably the main reason for the pretty good vita performance this december.

I'm already curious how DQ:B will perform, the majority of sales will surely be on Vita again after the first two weeks.

Does this include the bundled copies and Old Hunter SKU?

And so the year ends and the hardware numbers make me smile.

One year ago I was terrified for the future of dedicated gaming consoles in Japan. Today I am somewhat less so.
So after witnessing the lowest hardware selling year ever* you are somewhat less terrified for the future of dedicated gaming consoles in Japan?

That's a bit bizarre :)

* since 2002, source Media Create.

adding software+hardware revenue it's apparently the worst year...ever*

(sure digital will pull it over 1988 and possibly 1989, that's not saying much)

also I was going to make a fancy chart but screw it too much work

after 2 weeks (Famitsu):
11./03. [WIU] Bayonetta 2 <ACT> (Nintendo) {2014.09.20} (¥8.316) - 9.284 / 42.398 <60-80%> (-72%)
16./13. [WIU] Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem # <RPG> (Nintendo) {2015.12.26} (¥7.236) - 9.094 / 32.900 <40-60%> (-62%)

also...was Dengeki week 52 never posted?

*since it started getting tracked in 1988

It was no bundle, the game was just given free with the system for some time, neither tracker considered that sales, so there's no data.

It does include Old Hunteres, hence all physical rereleases.

I think the bundled copy can be calculated separately, iirc, it was bundled with every PS4 in the month leading up to TPP's launch, so PS4 hardware sales in August should = bundled Bloodborne copies.

Who would have thought a year ago that Vita will after all have at least a one million seller in Japan. Not that it changes the the overall performance of Vita that has been poor in both hw and sw markets but still nice to see of course.

Not surprised 3DS sold almost a million less this year.
Yeah, 3DS reached saturation in Japan.
The problem is that 3DS was the only console keeping the dedicated console market afloat in Japan and no system yet has shown it can fill the void.

In 2016 the only systems which can be reasonably predicted will be up compared this past year are PS4 and the newly launched NX.
Every other system will be likely down unless key software will be released like for 2015 were Splatoon for Wii or Minecraft for Vita.
Thus to even match the worst HW selling year ever, in 2016 PS4 and NX which will be likely supply constrained need to offset the decline of all the rest.

Funnily enough, sw-wise this year will likely see an increase, with 3DS still leading sales, with key games such as YW3, MH Stories, DQM: Joker 3, DQXI and a likely Pokémon game.

I know it's only on Media Create due to the tracking period, but I seriously didn't think Vita was only going to be 100k down YoY, it looked like it was heading to much more than that given an average performance all year and nothing particularly big for the holidays.

And yeah, all thanks to a 1m seller announced at Gamescom, lol.

They also released a list of the best selling of 2015 on eshop. I don't remember it all, but i remember the first 4 games were splatoon, mario maker, minecraft and xenoblade on that order.

Yeah. Without MC Vita would have been pretty much dead after last year. Now it probably at least has one decent year ahead of it.

Next week is the end, I'll start a comparison with MH4, but that will be difficult to match.

Like clockwork :p
Well, at least hes also says that the current number for the latest WiiU version is beyond dreadful (because they are much lower than the Vita number), even if he doesnt use those words :p :) WiiU version doing worse than last year despite having more users, many of those are probably younger auidence too, thanks to Splatoon. I'm wondering if the serie is starting to lose fans, alá Guitar Hero. Its been a while since the last 3DS version, so maybe it can sell well if many users havnt played it in a while (less fatigue). No idea how the mobile version is doing.

Yeah rhythm games aren't evergreen (genre itself still is I guess). Even Taiko franchise fades away it have lasted for quite long time.

I did not expect an increase for the PS4, this year will definitely be interesting for PS4 in Japan.
Wii U hitting 3 million is pretty cool, I wonder if it will continue to sell at all after the NX comes out.

Can we get a consistent name for #FE in these charts? Because tagging it as sometimes SMTXFE, sometimes #FE, and sometimes Genei Ibunroku FE between every new thread is gonna be seriously annoying when looking it up in archives.

Yeah, it seems like it, unless the platform choice is one of the main reasons.

The first 3DS Taiko entry sold 550k units from 2012 to 2014.
Thats one reason why i'm wondering how a 3DS version would do today. Think it would give some indication if people are still very interested in the franchise or not.

Japan becoming the new UK, which had already became the new NA.

Na but seriously. Western games doing pretty well on PS4. 2016 is the year Japanese software shines through.
Starting the year off right, HW wise. Everything up except the 20m seller 3ds. Let's see how far into 2016 MM and Splatoon can carry Wii U. Hopefully PS4 can surprise salesGaf with the first decent home console year in Japan since the PS3/Wii.
