Media Create Sales: Week 11, 2016 (Mar 14 - Mar 20)

Following Fate Grand Order's success, Sony's PlayStation branch itself will also work on mobile games for the JP/Asia market with a new studio named ForwardWorks.

The studio will use PlayStation IP and create "full-fledged game titles", so presumably they're a bit bigger in scope than LittleBigPlanet autorunners and more like what we normally see in the Japanese mobile marketplace these days.

Tokyo, March 24, 2016 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. that will change its company name to Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. (SIE) effective Friday, April 1st, 2016, announced today the formation of ForwardWorks Corporation (ForwardWorks), a new company that is aimed to deploy new services toward the ever-expanding smart device market. ForwardWorks will begin its operation from April 1st, 2016.

ForwardWorks will leverage the intellectual property of the numerous PlayStation® dedicated software titles and its gaming characters as well as the knowledge and know-how of gaming development expertise which was acquired over the years with PlayStation® business to provide gaming application optimized for smart devices including smartphones [Smart devices supporting Android and iOS] to users in Japan and Asia. The company will aim to deliver users with opportunity to casually enjoy full-fledged game titles in the new filed of the smart device market.

I think that brings us to... essentially every notable Japanese publisher working on mobile.

I'm curious to see who is staffing the studio. Maybe some of the Vita teams at SCEJ? I guess it could consist entirely of new hires and external contractors, but I don't think it's specified.

SCE Japan Studio shipped a single internal game on Vita and the team that made it is working on a sequel for PS4.

Might as well try and crater the Vita audience in order to get them to shift to PS4. Who knows how long the Vita will continue to be around and, sadly, I doubt we are going to see a follow-up from Sony. Getting them to switch to PS4 is in the interest of the studio, that way they only need to release one version, specifically the version they will probably only bring West much to the lament of Vita owners in the west.

I don't think this staggered release strategy from the first Diva F is going to work again in terms of basically doubling the final sales count on a different platform. I fear the same thing is going to happen to other late-staggered PS4 releases like Ys VIII where the PS4 sales of it in Japan will be pitiful.

That sounds like a great way to lose your audience, not move it.

Moving an audience between successive console generations is one thing, attempting to move audiences that like completely different form-factors and function is just a recipe for losing said audience. And when the Vita SKU is, to this day, still pulling in a very large if not majority share of sales for your title... you probably don't want to lose said audience and they rather self-evidently have no desire to move.

Dengeki is showing legs for MGSV on PS4, should it 450k retail next week, the game has likely already sold more than 500k units.

Total retail software sales for PS4 will surpass 9m by next week, still a couple million behind Wii U, but should have no problem surpassing it.

I think they made the right choice when the Vita and PS3 SKUs were on the same day with Diva F 2nd.

The first time was basically a good will bonus. This is transparent.

weekly comment

PS4
Two western titles to be mentioned for first: The Division had a really good second week and it's the 20th title to pass 100k on PS4; Call of Duty:Black Ops 3 passed Dragon Quest Monsters.
Sign of the times.
Gundam Breaker 3 and Attack on Titan keep selling, but they are both behind their Vita counterparts.

3DS
Nintendo budget line debuted with two titles in the chart, Tomodachi Life and Animal Crossing; the latter probably will eat vanilla version sales so the top spot probably will remain for Pokemon.
Doramemon showing legs and confirms the better result from previous entries, Monster Hunter Generations and Monster Strike probably said bye bye.
Meanwhile another increasing week for Pokemon ORAS.

Vita
Digimon sales were similar to the previous entry, will legs be similar? Only time will tell.
Gundam Breaker 3 and Attack on Titan almost hit the 100k mark, a good result for both titles, while Summon Night 6 had a big drop which confirms the mediocre result on the opening week.
Last but not least, Minecraft : officially 1 year in the chart and sales +7% up. Next target: MHP2G The Best, which charted for 58 weeks.

WiiU
Very good debut for Pokken, very heavy drop for Zelda TP HD, Mario Tennis passed DQX and Hyrule Warriors; Mario Maker had a +50% increase from last week, probably due to some bundle restock.

Wii
Momotarou Dentetsu 2010 keeps selling and passed… the original version released in 2009.
Combining both releases the title sold 580k, one of the best 3rd party result on the platform.

Monster Hunter Stories appears to be entering its primary marketing cycle with 15 minutes of game footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz_B4eg9ZUY

Actually, that's just a separate upload of the MH Festa 2016 stage show.

But yeah, I do think the primary marketing cycle for the game will start soon. There's Anime Japan this week-end, and we already know Monster Hunter Ride On (the anime) will be there. We're most likely going to get a teaser trailer of some sort, along with a debut date (I'd say July).

Based on this, I'd say MHS could come out sometime in September (or maybe August, if they want to take advantage of school holidays, but I think we would have heard something if they were targetting that month).

If they start their primary marketing cycle in April, for a release in September, that leaves them 6 months for marketing the game (which is more than enough I think, especially since they've showed the game several times at events like TGS or MH Festa, and it's been playable there too).

Well to be fair, I don't think someone at Capcom was bored and suddenly decided to upload just the gameplay segment from the MH Festa for fun (I mean, that was back on January 10th). There's definitely something brewing up.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, the Puzzle & Dragons X anime is debuting on July 4th (most likely getting a trailer this week-end too). I guess both that one and the MH anime will debut during the same month... PXDX is out on July 28th, and MHS... no idea. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

I don't Know if you realize that PS4 so far is down YOY...

I don't know if you realize, but that is comparing 12 weeks for 2015 to 11 weeks for 2016. If we were to compare the first 12 weeks for 2015 to the last 12 weeks, ps4 2016 is up easily year over year.

PS4 is down YOY so far.

For the PS4.

2016 (Weeks X-1):
318.222

2015 (Weeks X):
332.988

Week 53: 65.427

2016 (Weeks X):
383.649

Up 50k YoY. Though its highly possible that this gap will actually contract over the next couple of weeks as the PS4, last year this time, was either "flat" with the current numbers or in the 40k's. The real drop off was in April and later, which is also where we have yet to see the 2016 baseline as per what Hiska mentioned. The first quarter year was high last year as well, and this year isn't exactly "blowing last year out of the water".

DOA will sell better on PS4. The power of the soft engine and bouncy physics exclusive to PS4 :p

Mobile charts are out for February. There are a few things of note.

1.) GungHo has fallen to #5 behind Mixi, LINE, Bandai Namco, and Square Enix. Puzzle & Dragons may still be the #2 app, but it can no longer cause the company to top the industry on its strength alone. Monster Strike on the other hand is still doing a good job of that for Mixi.

2.) Sony, Namco, Konami, and Square Enix all have apps in the top 10. Namco actually has two of them. I feel comfortable reasserting that traditional publishers are really getting a handle on the mobile market and managing to push past a lot of the mobile start ups. It probably helps that the taste in mobile gaming is shifting more into their court with the increasing complexity of mobile games.

3.) We're continuing to see newer apps take prominence in these charts. Everything is a 2014 or 2015 game with the exception of Puzzle & Dragons and Monster Strike, and Monster Strike first came out in December 2013. In a lot of Western regions, a significant amount of the chart is still reserved by 2012 and 2013 titles, suggesting less change in taste. Mind, that is also starting to change, but it's a bit off topic for this thread.

4.) Genre variety is pretty healthy. Arcade games, action RPGs, turn based RPGs, puzzle games, rhythm games, and sports games all feature. We've come on a long way since the Mobage Clones in terms of what can be a big success.

5.) I feel it's worth pointing out a lot of these have higher end production values and notable file sizes. Some don't, certainly, but high production value titles are now being embraced by the market, which is a change from not too long back.

Miku is disappointing behind Dead or Alive.

In addition to that From (or more like Bamco the publisher) did run out of all copies and doing reprints as quickly they can. He thinks retailers should have expected UC4 delay would cause DS3's demand go higher than usual.

Well, it released in March, but it's been going between 170-200 on the top grossing charts.

The "top mobile app" articles were about it topping the download charts.

That said, the goal of this release seems more about getting people into their system than making notable amounts of money, so that part is pretty meaningful for them, and I'll bring over the download charts next month so we can see where that ranked.

Investors seemed happy that it featured standard monetization practices, presumably making them optimistic about more earning centric titles with the following four releases. If those don't do well, I'd expect a lot more cynicism.

Misread your post and thought you said the Pokkén bundle made most of the Wii U sales *oops*

Agreed about DQMJ3. I guess we can expect +70% sellthrough for Week 1?

About Monster Hunter Stories, the last event for the Monster Hunter Festa 2016 is this Sunday. They might announce something there, I think. They did announce it originally during the MH Festa 2015, after all.

Edit: TV Commercials for Yo-kai Sangokushi

Edit 2: looks like Uppers (PSV) is now coming out on July 14th if Rakuten is to be believed.

[3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 <RPG> (Square Enix) (¥5.250) - 40%

That's... kind of bad for a DQ game on the most popular platform in Japan, isn't it? Or maybe S-E printed way more copies than there's an audience for? I'd imagine they would be perfectly aware of the numbers the other DQM games did on the 3DS, though.

What's the difference between 三國志 and 三国志?

First is used from Koei and second from Yeti's Koihime Musou and now Yo-kai.

I googled it but I don't think I figured the difference.

https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/三國志

國 and 国 are the same word, but the first character is traditional Chinese while the second one is simplified. In Japanese usually the simplified version is used.

Maybe they are getting burnt out of dragon quest games perhaps?
I mean you have what 5 or 6 DQ games on 3ds already or something with DQ11 coming later this year?

First is used from Koei and second from Yeti's Koihime Musou and now Yo-kai.

I googled it but I don't think I figured the difference.

The first one seems to be used in material based on the Japanese interpretation of The Three Kingdoms (the manga and anime used this kanji), whereas the second one is the title used by the original Chinese literature. At least, that's what the disambiguation page seems to say.

Nah, before the implementation of Simplified Chinese, the original Romance of the three Kingdoms used the first variant as well (三國演義)
If anything it's the other way around. Koei (and the Manga/Anime adaptation) reference the original literature by using 國, while the rest uses the more common 国 in Japanese.

That's... kind of bad for a DQ game on the most popular platform in Japan, isn't it? Or maybe S-E printed way more copies than there's an audience for? I'd imagine they would be perfectly aware of the numbers the other DQM games did on the 3DS, though.

We've been discussing this for a few months already, and it was also mentionned in this very topic, but the game was barely advertised and it is expected to have a very low first week compared to its predecessors and what should have been its sales under normal circumstances.

The sellthrough isn't so bad all things considered, if the quality is there expect a much better ratio FW/LTD than the previous DQM on 3DS.

To be fair this would be like me saying "if Sony marketed Tearaway it would have sold hundreds of thousands. It selling so lowly is actually ok all things considering". Mind you there were people trying to spin in that time in this way and it was a bad excuse then and a bad excuse now.

The blog guy isn't worried, and he says that is a normal start, no problem.
