So today Hiro (sucessor of moot) posted about financial difficulties 4chan is experiencing:

ever since 4chan and especially /qa/ has been going insane. everyone wants their most hated boards closed (/pol/ right up there). in the midst of confusion and desperatrion comes our hero:

so what do you think the future of 4chan is? have memes gone too far? I'm guessing a couple of closed boards and way more advertisement.

The two options are selling to Shkreli or deleting /pol/

Two very different roads to go down...

I wouldn't mind him buying it if he kept it as it is (or improved it). He seems like a laissez faire kind of guy.

I'm out of the loop - why would they close boards?
Less images posted, less useless dead boards, less strain on the servers.

Oh man I can't imagine an internet without 4chan

For as much shit as it gets I love the generals they have there for various MMO's

Its amazing that moot was able to keep the site floating for so damn long as it is. I don't think the sites in such dire straits as it is. Hiros being a drama queen because he hasn't even cut anything yet.

He can merge half the boards anyway, Martin ain't getting shit, maybe the users will invoke the Anon of yore and ruin Martin if he tries anything.

Delete the porn boards, delete the "not" porn boards like /soc/, lower the mb limit again.

Or create certain hours where only 4chan pass users can post, lotta options. Also I'm positive Hiro has no idea what he's doing and has just been letting the mods run the show, otherwise useless reactionary boards like /qst/ wouldn't exist.

Yep, dollars to dimes says the servers are up to cost, Hiro is just trying to turn a profit from it instead of keeping the ship stable and floating.

Was the Hiro post archived? I'm looking for in on /qa/ now.

Anyways, I always wondered how 4chan could possibly be profitable with such a bad reputation plus a userbase that probably entirely uses adblock and hates paying for things. I'm not surprised the answer is "it isn't".

I don't even think deleting /pol/ will fix the problem, /pol/-leaks are way to common on the other boards and deleting it will just make it way worse in the short term.

EDIT: found it http://boards.4chan.org/qa/thread/706294#p706294

One option could be deleting the porn boards. Because they're built on WebM posts, they cost a bundle and don't exactly make 4chan a nicer place

I, again, cannot believe that so many adults would admit to reading and being emotionally invested in 4chan.

It was fun once upon a time. Then it got progressively more crazy (hand to god it didn't used to be this bad), considerably less self aware, and most of its userbase aged out of it (yo).

Probably just my rose tinted glasses.

I admit, I enjoyed reading some of the boards when I was younger, but I've come to realize that there's so much garbage spewing out of it constantly that it would be better for everyone if it disappeared at this point.

That could be an option, delete everything down to /trash/ and you half image hosting costs while still keeping the big traffic draws of /v/, /a/ and /b/
