I wouldn't be too sad if 4chan does close, but I will miss the effect /mu/ had on me discovering new music that would have been left unheard if it weren't for those one or two people who loved it enough to champion them.

I would warn against watching that stream as some people are spamming the guy with porn and he's opening up messages he gets at random while acting silly.
Some of the best porn is made in written text....
I've only been on the site a few times, but I still feel ashamed for doing so. Pretty much everyone I've known that revealed they frequent the site showed how much of an idiot/asshole it made them shortly afterwards. Shkreli should be in prison; that site and its derivatives should be wiped from the internet, along with all the low-lives that give it its reputation.

I've never seen him love stream before. I don't know if he legit buys his own hype or is just crazy lol. Telling people to come to his place so he can fight then and that he's the edgiest person alive. No more of that for me!

On the rare occasions where you actually get discussion out of it rather than porn, /v/ is a pretty solid place to talk about old games.
Anybody who doesn't think this is him trolling people should now know better.
Dude is hyping himself up because he's doing a quiz where he can name countries off the map just by sight.

I am completely serious.
I like that threads can be recreated at any time once they fall off the board, thus regenerating discussion constantly. While there's lots of dumb posts that get made, a lot of fantastic discussion comes from the board. My particular favorite posts ever happen to come from a Final Fantasy XII thread where someone explained how Vaan is an important character that's genuinely relevant to the plot of the game. The level of discussion that can be generated from some users is amazing there, and because of the extremely light moderation, people will say anything and everything they can about a game.
Besides that, /v/ is the only place I've found where you can get huge amounts of discussion out of the most obscure titles out there. Nowhere else have I seen games like OneShot and Sorcerland get as much attention as they did there.
I agree, but like you said, that's rare. And it's continually been getting worse.
There's probably the largest amount of discussion of certain games series that get barely any discussion on any other website.
For example, I can discuss Falcom games indepth without talking to the same 15 people over and over like here on Neogaf. Exaggeration but still.

Seriously, fuck /pol/. Shit infects everything. I barely go on reddit but I've heard that the r/the_donald has had a similar effect in letting alt-right garbage infect completely unrelated boards or subreddits. Containment boards don't work, they just attract other awful people!
/v/ can be great for spontaneous game discussion, far more than GAF if only for activity. Post-release there were (are?) constant Dead Rising threads full of people constantly posting and actually collaborating on a guide for when to do the different events. Meanwhile the thread on GAF has like 1000 posts. There have also been some entertaining Resident Evil threads there too. I also really enjoyed the MK threads leading up to the release of MKX. So when the discussion is about games it can actually be pretty good.
Unfortunately for every one of those there are like 3 threads about how they want to fuck this character or le spooky SJW boogeyman coming to take their games or other awful offensive trash.

Oh I know. It's incredibly shit and meme driven now, and music discussion has been a rarity there for months now. And yet despite all that, sometimes people share some really cool music there and it's gotten me into some really obscure stuff. It's a rose in a mountain of trash.

/v/ is a shithole but you can find great discussion once in a while. As others already stated, you can find big threads with on topic conversations that focus on more obscure titles or something more specific related to a mechanic or story moment. By comparison, on gaf these topics usually struggle to get more than two page threads before they die. This is especially true for older games.

4chan is hot take city and while the level of discourse can be real shitty at times (I mean really you don't expect to be called a nigger in polite conversation), but the lack of names and accountability does allow for the kind of raw, uninhibited emotion and opinions that you sometimes don't get on a place like GAF, even if they're not actually bad/hateful ones.
But yeah, you need to have an extreme tolerance to typical edgelord/nu-troll style comments to get to the nuggets of genuine conversation.

He's right though. 4chan was made so Moot and other SAforums users could talk about anime more freely.

You think a website that requires people to have college and/or isp given emails that takes about a year to approve people for posting has more traffic than a site that anyone can post on at any time with almost no restrictions? Like, GAF has a lot of traffic but don't think for a second that 4chan is small.

It's fun if you don't take it seriously and are aware the majority of posters are either shitposting or are in their mid-teens.
I don't get the people claiming you get good discussion there, maybe from /vg/ but not from /v/
