How can the games industry resist and push back against Trump & his fascism?

It'll probably surprise you then that not everyone on here is American and that we don't give a shit about your politics.

Again, topic title is fairly clear. Feel free not to click on it if you don't care. Posting in a thread just to state that you don't think said thread should exist is threadshitting 101.

Thinking on it a bit, I do think companies becoming MUCH, MUCH more strict with harassment in online games and such would be a way, especially if more gamers feel empowered to say awful things with Trump as president.

These conversations would always do better if we worked to change minds through debate rather than name calling and that goes for both sides.

Some people will never agree, but if you can change one mind rather than push them away, it's worth it.

I think humour always works well in political satire in stuff like simpsons and southpark.

Trump would be a cool character in a southpark game where they can really go to town.

Personally I think he is allot of hot air especially viewing the election from the UK (crazy), lets see what the man does with actual power and then I will judge him on his actions.

Please, point out to me a post on this forum where someone expressed that sentiment.

The only one I've seen the poster got banned for: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=223745679#post223745679

One of my hopes is that the advancement of voice recognition technology in stuff like Siri and Google Assistant will eventually allow services to ban users if it recognizes hate speech or other such nonsense. At the moment all of the popular services still have to be manually moderated I believe?

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

I think we all know the answer. A sequel to Metal Wolf Chaos by From Software where ex President Obama fights to take back the White House and America but this time teams up with Mecha Sanders power by Socialism to take down Uberfuhrer Trump and his cabinet of GOP cyborgs and mutants.

A lot of themes in popular media end up being a reaction to real-world events and politics, so this is totally a thing that's bound to happen. It's hard to say how people will channel this into their work, though. I don't think a lot of it will be on-the-nose.

How is pushing back against fascism undermining the results of a democratic election? Being neutral in the face of oppression means we side with the oppressors.

Also,

People should be more careful with the use of the word 'fascism'. I don't think that most people even know what it means.
And showing a cartoon doesn't make it true.

It's too bad that good games take so long to create. Writers, musicians, etc. can have a much quicker "response" to the election than developers can.

I'm excited to see what indies will do with this.

I'd like to see games that progressively put the player in increasingly more cruel situations to the groups of people that were called out during the campaign. Really make them look hard at exactly what the rhetoric's consequences are.

Maybe start as a fun cool cops game but after a few levels you get orders to beat up a peaceful protest and then you end up killing a little kid and it's super graphic and everybody is still like YEAH! GOOD JOB!

Yeah, that is a pretty interesting idea. Games are good at involving players doing what the system tells you and one might argue that if designed properly and carefully, this could provide an experience that make the player reflect on acts of complicity and escalation of violence.

Unfortunately the rest can dance dangerously close to saying the same yet get away with it because they claim to be liberal.

Can this shit get shut down already?

if you have an issue with moderation i'm pretty sure you take that up with them in a PM

Why is offtopic a thing when I got straight up politics on my gaming board.
Politics have always been intertwined with gaming. You are supporter of this medium and thus should care about thousands of creators that will be impacted by threats against them and their families in this new administration. Extreme conservatism will creep and shape all sorts of mediums in the next years and that is noteworthy.

Where are the mods when we need them?

Facism: a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

Hate to break it to you but Trump isn't even in office yet. That's why this thread should be closed. You're calling him a fascist yet he hasn't even become president yet.

Everyone who disagrees with me is a racist and a sexist, but feel free to disagree with me.
I'm not sure what this is in reference to but tr*mp's rhetoric was literally both of those things. Literally textbook definition.

Anyway, it's always funny that there are people stumbling over themselves to explain why 10% less breast on the western cover of a Japanese game is destroying games as an art form yet refuse to interface with the concept that games, as art, can be political.

I dislike Trump. I also dislike forced attempts to shoehorn these discussions into a gaming context. Convoluted attempts to link a particular community to politics are also happening on enthusiast forums for other hobbies of mine as well.

Judging by the bans in the first few replies, my account will have a similar fate for straying from the popular GAF narrative.

Here's what the video game industry can do: Keep making games.

I don't know why this is a surprise to anyone here but politics are involved in most aspects of your life whether you it to or not. So I don't a reason why a thread like this shouldn't exist here.

"Oh hey. Where are the mods?"

Maybe PM them instead of spamming this thread with this. Btw, mods have already seen this and it's not getting closed because it is related to games, so there's no point. If you don't want to be involved in the topic than don't click on it like the majority of GAF.

Banning for thread shitting and derailing the thread by talking about how the topic shouldn't be a thread is bannable under many topics. There are ways to contact mods about the thread without derailing it, and it doesn't mean they'll agree with you.

It's not even hard. Gamergate.

No shoehorning needed.

So in terms of consoles I think there should be functionality tied in with the report functionality.

Consoles have the ability to record now so when someone is hurling racist, sexist, homophobic etc abuse, have the functionality to report with video/audio.

That with practice be support staff should foster a better community. If there's a a chance of reprisal then bad people are more likely to follow the rules.

Every action follows a reaction.

By playing an active part in it, games can provoke empathy better than any form of media. Maybe instead of pushing an agenda down everyones throat, no matter how important or morally good you think it is, try the opposite. Try to understand those who look at the world differently instead of damning everything to hell you don't agree with at first glance.

I hope games as an art form stand tall and explore it all, the great as well as the deplorable facettes of human nature. We'd all be better off if we weren't so entranched in our particular believes.
